OK guys I got my car back today and it looks pretty good.  I noticed what I thought was a defect in the paint.  The Ford Dealership Body Shop Manager told me that the effect is called “Orange Peal” and it is common in new paint.  She said that new cars coming off the line will have the same effect.  She said they will give it a good buffing and that will bring it out.

I never noticed this in the paint before and I consider myself to have a good attention to detail.  My question to all of you is she correct with this term “Orange Peal” and is it as common as she states.  The effect looks like an orange peal with little divots all over.  I’m not happy with it at all and I know I can make them do it all over again.  I just want to know if she is shooting me a line or is this an actual paint effect.

I'll post some pics as soon as I get the chance.

Thanks

True.
Most cars have orange peel from the factory somewhat but since it's more pronounced on what they painted, it needs to be addressed.

You could wet sand it and then buff it out, that's how you get that mirror finish. Like on classic and hi end cars.
My guess is that you won't have enough clear left if the orange peel is heavy.

Never been impressed with body work done by any dealer in a long time.

Good luck in correcting that issue.

All cars will have Orange Peel unless wet sanded and buffed out .... However ... the amount of orange peel in the repaired areas should match the orange peel pattern in the original painted areas (the factory peel) .... From what I have seen ... the black Mustangs have some pretty slick paint so the body shopped should have sanded and polished until it matched.

I'm gonna have to disagree with the thought that all cars will have orange peel unless buffed out.

All cars that are not painted or clearcoated properly will have orange peel.

I would make them redo it until you are happy.

I agree with ltm, your car should look as close to how it did before the wreck as possible. And the damaged area that was repainted should match the paint on the rest of the car, smoothness wise

Orange peel is a common problem, it can be fixed as stated before. If you don't like it after they try to fix it, make them repaint and try again. Also make sure you look at it in the sun light, it shows the most in paint.

I also had the car Simonized when it was delivered to the dealership and the entire car had that glossy finish, like "dmhines" stated.  The OP on the repair work was the first thing I noticed; I made sure I picked up the car during lunch to get as much sunlight as possable.  The manager tried to find other examples of OP on the car finally pointing out a small section on the B pillar on the drivers side.  That is when she told me that most cars coming off the line have OP.

My concern is that the car did not have any OP at all that I noticed before the repair work.  The parts that were untouched do not have OP at least not noticeable, but the entire work that was done has OP.  The dealership guarantees their work for life of the car so I plan on them doing it until I am satisfied.  I told them from the beginning that I am very picky about my car and I have a good attention to detail.  So if they can not get the car back to its original condition then they just need to total it out and get me a new one.  The manager said not only will they get it back to its original condition they will make it better for whatever that means.

Already I have noticed a scratch on the spoiler that was not there, a punch in the back of the passenger seat, my key fob will not pop the trunk, and when they were reinstalling the trunk liner they ripped out my wiring to my sequential turn signals.

Like I said before; there is no such thing as craftsmanship anymore.

Thanks guys and looking forward to seeing if I’m on the right track, or is it a loosing battle.

Doing paint matching on auto repairs takes skill from their painter.  The key is to match the orange peel of the rest of the car if the entire car is not being painted.   Just like you noticed that your repaired panels have too much OP ...  there are just as many examples as the repaired panel being too smooth compared to the factory paint which will also make it stick out like a sore thumb ....  of course ... all this OP stuff is far more important on dark colored cars than light colored cars where it's not as noticable.

I just wanted to update everyone with some pics.  The weather is still pretty bad around here and I desperately need a good wash but here they are.

I’m getting a new hood so I decided to wait on the stripes.  Just trying to budget the best I can and plan everything out in the best order.  I have an OCD issue. he he

I'm actualy very surprised to see that the stang is in such good condition... considering the hit it took. Ford made a safe car in my opinion from looking at these photos and other ones like it.

Yes, Ford did do well in the safety dept. for our stangs.
Look at this Mustang below.....it happened in my area last month and the boy walked away!

Actually the orange peel is hard to notice if you’re not looking for it and digital photography also makes it difficult to see.  If the sun wasn’t hitting my car the way it was and the fact that I was looking for imperfections in the paint after the repair work I probably would have never noticed it.

From you photo if you look at the eaves of the house you can see a slight ripple effect.  This could be orange peel or just the camera causing the effect either way I like your sarcasm.
