they have rack and pinion, the front ends of the II's are coveted by hot rodders as some of the best steering / suspension setups available for custom cars and upgrading the front ends on pretty much anything they can stuff these under. from the factory the II's have disc brakes in the front, and drums in the rear. the discs are kinda puny, but large rotor / caliper / pad kits are available for pretty cheap and are a great upgrade. the 2.3 4cyl and 2.8 6 cyl motors are pretty weak, andi n all honesty the 2.3 can probably be made into a quicker motor easier than the 2.8 - i cant tell you about MPG, but i CAN tell you that the rear end gears ranged from the high 2.xx to 3.43 or maybe even a 3.80 also, i cant speak as to cowl rot, but i can tell you to check under floor pans (obvious) and under the battery tray. also around the wheel wells. all basic stuff really.
