Winter tires and sizes

Jagged -> Winter tires and sizes (11/27/2007 11:27:52 AM)

I scored myself a free set of stock 14" scrub wheels that I want to mount some winter/snow tires on.  I have a 93 2.3l, so I really don't need any high-performance type tires.  I'm looking for some reasonably priced tires that'll do well in snow/slush and some ice.  This is my first car, I've only driven trucks up until now.  When selecting tires for trucks, I know the skinnier tires do better at getting down to the pavement than wider tires.

Right now the two sizes I'm looking at are 195/75R14 and 205/70R14.  The only real difference between the two is about 1/2" of section width.  About the cheapest I've found for tires in these sizes is some Cooper (mastercraft) Glacier Grips from triesavings.com for $39 a pop.  So far the most appealing I've found is the Bridgestone Winterforce M+S, the tread pattern and staggered shoulders reminds me a lot of the Interco Super Swamper Boggers (which do really well in mud/muck).

Right now I'm leaning the most toward the Bridgestones in the 195/75R14 flavor, any thoughts or suggestions on other tires or sizes to consider?

The winterforce is a decent snow tire, kind of loud on the road. The michelin x-ice is available in size 195/75-14 for $59 each.  That is a much better snow tire.
