Hey, I have a 77 w/ a 302, and the previous owner at some point changed out the manual tranny for an auto.  I was wondering if I wanted to switch it back, what trannies are compatable?  For instance, is the tranny off the 79-83 302 the same?  Also, and tips on where I might pick one up.  Is a junk yard my best bet?  I'm fine with it needing a bit of work.  I'm a gear junky, and a glutton for punishment if it comes to that.  I know the ~80 mustangs came had an optional 5spd as well.  Would that be compatable?  I'd love to get a five speed if it was.  But if anyone knows what my options are, that'd be great.  Thanks.

Might wanna fish around on e-bay a little.  I usually keep an eye on the listings and there usually seems to be MII trannys in there every once in a while.  The four speeds are easy to find, it si the 302 bellhousing that noone ever seems to want to let go of.  If I were you, I'd do what I did with my Pinto and put a T5 in.  The driveshaft will be a little long, and the shifter a little closer to the dash, but in all honesty, I don't know how I drove my car before!  Love the 5spd, and it was pretty simple to put in.  If you have any more questions, let me know, as I have done this before, and might have a tip or two for you.  (Not claiming to know it all, but might be of some help.)

Yes, in Brazil "Pinto" does mean "little p*nis", but let's just keep that between us.........
