new to the forums,i am building a mustang to dirt race with.i was wondering about using svo a arms in the front.1st question is how much wider are they than a stock one?i also know they are hard to find, and i assume you cant replace the ball joints. is there an alternative to using the svo arms and getting the same width, anyway i am trying to get the widest stance i can get,i was also wondering if the thunderbird axles are wider than the mustang in the 7.5 setup.

I believe that the A arms are the same size and I am pretty sure that the ball joints can be replaced. If you wanted longer A-arms the thunderbirds might have longer ones.

I would not use the SVO A-arms. The ball joints cannot be replaced and they are typically hard to come by. The sn95 mustang A-arms are similar as well as the 87-88 turbo coupe A-arms.

I do believe that the 83-86 turbo coupe axles are longer than the mustangs. At least they were when we compared the two.

The 87-88 are different because its an 8.8 where the 83-86 is only a 7.5

The 83-86 axles will fit into the 87-88 turbo coupe if you wanted them too. The size of the rear end has no effect on the axles.

That is irrelevant to the question asked. The axles is what he asked about with which the 83-86 axles will give a wider stance. It does not matter whether they came from a 7.5 or an 8.8. An 8.8 is not even needed on a 4 cylinder mustang until you get up to the insane power levels.

You might want a LSD for that type of racing though

But then again that just might be me...

And yes the 8.8 rear differencial is bigger (wider)

turbo2.3, I don't mean to rag on you, but you should read his post a little more close

The 8.8 rear end is not wider, it is the exact same width. I have had many rear ends taken out of cars, both 7.5 and 8.8. If the 8.8 was in fact wider, then the axles from the Mustang 5.0's and the 4 cylinder cars would not interchange...but they do. First thing we need to know is what year Thunderbird he is talking about. By comparison, the axles from an 86 turbo coupe were wider than the 7.5/8.8 mustang, 4 lug axles.

They have the same mounting places, but it is wider. tbird proved me wrong, but its only 3/4" on each side.

The only years they had an 8.8 is 87-88, the 83-86 are 7.5's

The 8.8 axles in the 87-88 are different and is exactly what was used in the 93 cobra. The regular fox body axles from the 7.5 and 8.8 is what I was talking about along with the 83-86 t-bird axles being wider. It's the axles that are wider on the 87-88 t-bird. The housings are the same.
In the long run, it's whether or not he wants rear discs or drum brakes.
