Gotta agree with Howarmat on that one until I see otherwise in performance from this one. Unless you are really set on this particular model, if I were you I might just drop $60.00 or so and have your C&L Street polished as they look amazing that way. This guy polished his C&L and his throttle body.

That looks fantastic. How do you polish it?
The modular depot intake looks like a JLT clone. They all do the same thing. The tune is what make the difference.

You can polish the C&L with some metal polish and a buffing wheel, or pay someone to have it done.
Not all intakes are the same. The C&L (and all of the ones with a similar type intake pipe where the pipe widens after the MAF to create a secondary plenum effect) allows airflow to slow down and it's power comes from the fact that it has all that volume for metered air to sit in and wait to be used. The K&N's (and all no tune intakes) rely on reducing turbulence in the intake, as well as removal of the restricitive intake box. The JLT (I will leave this in a class by itself, because it's the only one like it I know of) starts with the idea that by keeping the difference between the MAf and intake tube sizes the same, you will increase the sirflow speed at the TB and atthe intake valve. Higher port velocity at the intake valve helps torque production. JLT seems like they compromised some of that speed however, to balance the air volume needs at higher RPM's to boost HP production. Ken's intake however, is a focused study at helping torque production. Airflow is focused on torque production and since horsepower is simply a function of torque and some math, HP is helped as well. I would go further but I just took some painkillers for my hand, and focused thought is getting harder. I will explain further later if need be.
Personally, I sold my C&L for this one. I got mine used and sold it for what I got it for, so I am no further behind than I was at the get go.

Totally agree with you Bob on different functionalities of CAIs and I think as soon as Ken starts shipping these there may very well be a new Top 3. I was just commenting that if BoidMorphs was just looking for better looks, polishing his C&L might be a cheaper route for him than sh*tcanning his current CAI alltogether.
I also got my C&L unit slightly used at a very good price so I could easily get back what I have into it. I never did get the plastic housing that surrounds the filter to fit right so I left it out altogether. I also haven't had my C&L intake dynotuned yet. My tuner updated my tune based on another owner's car set up similarly just to get me going. This Modular Depot CAI is much better looking and I like the metal housing around the filter instead of cheap plastic. I figure I may as well as get one of these, plus an aluminum Spydershaft from Modular Depot and then get dynotuned.

who polishes them for 60 bucks? I polished the frame of my ninja, its a lot of work...I would consider paying some one to do it for me, also I bought some clear coat for polished aluminum from Eastwood company which lowers the upkeep on something like this

That was the price I was given by one of the members on the forum who had polished theirs. They said that's how much they had paid to have it done so I was throwing that out there.

Update: There have been two delays now due to the heat shields, so none of us have received this CAI yet. I anticipate getting it in the next couple of weeks and will post initial thoughts and comments then.

Hmmn, I am in the market for a CAI for my 08, thought I'd settle for the CL from Brenspeed...The only reason this one is getting me reconsidering is apparently this guys shop was where they did the comparrison on the CAI units. He also stated he wanted to improve the JL intake, that basically being the best CAI for HP/TQ, but the quality wasn't 100%. I wonder if this guy can give the power of the JL with the quality of the CL? My only concern is his mail order tuning...anyone have any experience with his tunes as compared to say Brenspeed.
I'm satisfied with my jlt. I'm interested in seing how this intake comes out and what kinda numbers it can put down with a street tune. Like how similar Ken's tune is to doug's or brent's.

I'm sorry, but that intake looks like a piece of crap. It looks very restrictive.
Eye of the beholder my friend. Also, this intake was designed to improve upon the design of the JLTII while adding better quality, so are you saying the JLTII, one of the highest flowing intakes available, is very restrictive too?

Perhaps. Even the FRPP intake on the Shelby GT looked better than I thought it was when I saw it in person. But I still can't help but thinking that this is just a mediocre intake and an overly-aggressive tune.
I agree that the gains are probably just in the tune, not the intake. Its just a tube that air flows through. Not exactly a high tech piece of equipment. Theyre all pretty much the same if you ask me.
Does anyone know if he was doing mail order tunes before this project?
Ken has been a major player in mustangs for a long time. Many mustang mags have called him a genius and a guru, and I've yet to hear or see a single bad word about him.

For those with questions on Ken's abilities, here are some of his highlights:
Ken Bjonnes -Founder of Modular Depot -Multiple wins and championships as tuner in the NMRA -First Modular car in the 10's in Pure Street -Quickest 4.6L 2VNA ever -One of the leading tuners in the country over the last 4 years
Also here's a link to a great thread where he introduces himself and his coworkers at Modular Depot:
