I want a second key for the 98 Mustang but the dealer wants $60 to program the $40 remote. I have seen remotes on E Bay. Is there a way to program them without using the dealer?

Also the volume contol has lost its "spring" and just flops around, although it does work if feals crap to use. Can this be easily fixed?

Does anyone have an owners manual to sell?

Have you tried an auto alarm store or a locksmith? They may have a way to set it up. Maybe a "generic" replacement is available like the garage door openers.

To program- turn the ignition switch from OFF to RUN eight times within 10 seconds, ending on RUN......the doors should lock and unlock(this means your in program mode)....press any button on the transmitter, the doors should lock and unlock to confirm it has been programed...if your gonna program another one, you must press any button on the 2nd one within 7.5 seconds after the first...hope this helps ya!!

Is it a new pats key or is it a new remote key fob. If its a pats key the dealer needs to program it with a NGS or a WDS in less you already have to working keys then you can do it yourself. If its a new remote then you need to cycle the key off to on 5 or 8 times can't remember the amount. when cycled the correct  amount the locks will cycle at that time press any lock button on the first remote and the locks will cycle then do the same thing for the second remote then cycle the key off and check the remotes they will now be programed.

I guess I was a little confusing. It is a second key that I want to program as I only have one. I wll get a second remote also so your advice on the 5 or 8 times on / off will come in handy. I guess I will have to fork out the $100 for a new key. It's a crazy amount of money to get a spare key. Isnt  technology wonderfull!!!

A $100 is steep check with all ford, mercuy and lincoln dealer in your area you should be able to get it done for around $75.00  also call a lock smith and get there price for the pats key and have the dealer program it.
some one carries thoses key cheap , i forget who ,
The Keys are avalible cheap at Most Lock smiths I had to get one for my 2000 buut the only place that will program your key is a dealer that was $65 the blank was $35 much cheaper then the $200.00 Ford wanted for the key and programing. Generic key works just as good as the ford key I have.

As it turns out, for some model Mustangs, (at least 96 and 97), you need only one key. (I bought blank transponder keys on eBay for $5 each). All you need to do is place the one working key into the ignition and turn it to ON (START) until the THEFT light turns off. Then, you have 15 seconds to place the new, cut, unprogrammed key into the ignition. The THEFT light flashes for 2 seconds and then turns off. It is now programmed.

I tried this also on my buddy's 99 GT but it didn't work. THIS one needed a second key. I found a way to confuse the computer into thinking I had actually 2 keys. The programming method is the same as for the 96, but it requires you to begin by placing 2 different and fully working keys in the ignition to let the computer go into programming mode. I don't know much, but I couldn't for the life of me figure out how the sensor on the ignition KNEW the two keys entered were different, if they were both fully functional. Since the transponder functions as a resistor of sorts, I thought that perhaps every transponder had a unique resistance, which the ignition sensor could detect in the signal response, so I used one key in the following manner: Placed the key in the ignition, turned to ON (START), and then took it out, then (in less than 15 seconds), placed a small magnet (a fridge magnet on the end of the key should work--I used the small magnet form a portable chess game pawn worked for me), and insert the key into the ignition and do the same again--turn to ON (START) and then took it out. NOW, the computer was in programing mode, and I could enter the cut and unprogrammed key and the 'stang programmed it! We (my buddy and I) were both amazed.

For what the dealer charged a ridiculous amount of money, it can be done in about 45 seconds for no more than $10.

Again, if you pay more than that for an extra PATS key for your mustang, you're flushing your money.

Cheers, from Sunny Miami,
gaspi.

Ok, I tried to do both methods and it didn't work.  Has anyone else has luck with the magnet trick?  I tried more than one magnet.  Do you just hold it to the side of the plastic?  I tried flat magnets, round ones, and nothing.  Am I supposed to get a magnet small enough that I can put in on the stem of the key at the base and still get it in the ignition.  A picture of how you did this would really help.  I hope your method works, but I'm growing doubtful.  I really hate dealorships, I hate going there.  Now when I know I've got to go to a dealorship, I go ahead and put some valsoline on my butt.

I dunno what to tell you.  That's how I got to add a key to my friend's 99 GT with a little magnet from a chess piece.  Maybe it works only on the 99GT?  I don't think so since the PATS system is relatively unchanged since 98.

How did you attach the magnet to the key?  Did you just hold it to the end or did you hold it to the side of the plastic part of the key?  A picture of how you held the magnet to the key could be really helpful.  I'm going to keep trying different ways, hopefully I can get it to work.

No need to attach the magnet, just hold it in place with your finger as you turn the key.  I put the magnet over the transponder.  My key was transparent, so I could see the transponder, but I think placing the magnet pretty much anywhere on the key will probably work.  Dude, I'm so sorry that it isn't working for you!  You know, I tried it on only one car, and that isn't enough for a scientific conclusion.  I really hope it works for you, because if it does, then I discovered a pretty cool mustang hack.

I never did get the magnet trick to work.  I did find a local locksmith to program it for $30.  The cheapest dealorship in Houston wanted $96.  The locksmith did all 3 of my keys for $30.
