You have 2 identical stock cars built in the last 10 years except one is Auto and I one is stick...Once again let me reittarate Identical. Both cars are functioning as they should. Which car is faster in the 1/4 mile? I think the answer is obvious lets see what everyone else thinks........

Dude you cant honestly think that the auto is faster than a stick........I mean come on you musnt been around cars too much with that statement!Sticks faster auto more consistant! No question

I think that if you took the average joe and told him to drive the same two cars one auto one manual in the 1/4 this joe guy would do better in the auto...IMO

I guess we will never know untill we race 2 identical cars. Hmmm sounds like it could be fun

I know.....The auto IS SLOWER,COME ON my friend has a stang that had a stick in it it ran 11.2 he put in an auto with a trans brake and it ran consistant 11.5 all the time in my eyes that means the auto is slower!

If anyone says an Auto is faster they have obviously never seen this guy race...

http://www.mustangforums.com/m_495464/tm.htm

Thats what a manual tranny is capable of in the hands of a skilled driver. He has a G-Force built T-5 with a Spec clutch. Non pro-shifted. He has to shift his tranny just like we do ours.
Automatics are popular because they are consistant. Consistancy is very important in drag racing.

Try like 16% drive train loss. I had my car dyno at 216 stock, auto. But, I beg to differ if your auto is setup. Line pressures adjusted to max, converter locked. Car goes thru the gears pretty good. If rear wheel hp was even, Id take my auto shifting at 6400 rpm anytime. My car is still pulling at that rpm shift point, no drop in power. Good tuner.

I don't get this thread. Road & Track and Car & Driver have tested cars for 40+ years, the automatics have NEVER been faster than the manuals. I never knew there was a question about this.

Look back at those magazines again.  The GTO's are a tick faster right out of the box with an automatic.

The numbers do get blurry with newer cars.. there are so many hybrid trannies now,, personally I love my classic 5-on-the-floor standard but wouldn't mind test driving a car with paddle shifters on the steering wheel

What's the story on the GTO?  Is that manual tranny a piece of crap or what?

The trans is a T56.  The same as the Cobra, Corvette, GT500, Virper, Camaro, Trans Am...Etc.

The auto has better gearing.

i didnt read the whole thread and im not gonna, but i will say this, my boss runs in ss nhra at cecil county every week and he has a 565 bbc in his car puttin down 1000 hp.  i asked him why he didnt go wit a stick, thinkin it would be faster, he laughed and said noone can shift faster than a built up auto.  now stock for stock the stick will win every time.  but if u do a couple mods to the auto, shift kit, valve body and stall, than it will be more consistent and faster.  and this is not me speaking this is from an nhra racer.  i think thats all u need.

lol, only 2 years old?  We can find an older thread to dig from the grave I'm sure.

While we're at it...I wonder how much my tune (Firmed shifts and adjusted shift points at WOT) compensates for the inferiority of my auto

Yea well if you DID read the whole thread you woulda seen that it's a general rule, if your car can run the 1/4 in around 10 seconds or faster then an auto tranny is the one to have. Above 10-11 seconds in the 1/4 & a manual is the way to go. That is of course the driver knows what he is doing.

The comparison between 1990 and 2000+ is right, the autos have gotten better but I have read that a 2005 Mustang GT Auto "computer redline" is at 5500 or 5800, in the manual, which I know because I have one, is 6500 stock and 6800 with a Ford Racing Chip so SilverLT1 is right about that, the only autos that are faster than manuals are the Sequential Manuals which are manuals at heart but you (the driver) dont have to push in a clutch, it spins the next gear up for you (dual clutches) and then flows into gear, faster than any human being can shift! But the simple fact about this is that for a true SMG, besides in a VW, you will be paying a pretty penny for it and Ford does not have one! Lamborghini has one that is a $10,000 option! In domestic cars MANUAL!! for now

I have a 69 mustang with a 351w. I have a auto FMX tranny. I know manuals are better for obvious reasons but, i love my fmx. I dont know if they changed trannys over time but OMG when my car shifts it feels like im gonna go through my fuggin drivers seat and end up on the rear seats. So im happy with my FMX. Thats just my opinion. lol
