advice on cutting out the plastic squares in CS scoops?
I got a good deal on a set of GT/CS / Shelby side scoops so I went with these instead of the 3d carbon ones that were my first choice. I'm dead set on making these look less toy like and cutting out the holes that are imitated in the scoops's vent. Does anyone have any ideas on how to make this work? There are several hundred holes similar to the grill on the car, and the plastic is pretty soft.

RE: advice on cutting out the plastic squares in CS scoops?
It may take forever, but....
Square chisel mortiser
The square chisel mortiser (also called hollow chisel mortiser), similar to a drill press in many respects, combines the cutting of a four-sided chisel with the action of a drill bit in the center. The bit clears out most of the material to be removed, and the chisel ensures the edges are straight and clean. This device was invented in 1874 by Robert and Ralph Greenlee (founders of the Greenlee Company).
Square chisel mortising bits can also be fitted to normal drill presses using a mortising attachment.
The Greenlee Company still manufactures mortisers, as do a large number of other power toolmanufacturers. It is a common tool in the woodshop of professional woodworkers, but because of its specialized nature, many amateur woodworkers would not make enough use of it to justify the moderately high cost and space this tool takes up in the woodshop. Some smaller and less expensive models, suitable for cutting only narrow mortises are available

haha - is that Wikipedia copy/paste, or do you just happen to know it was invented by Robert and Ralph Greenlee in 1874? LOL

Then you need to run an air line down to your breaks for true functionality.
Although, IMHO, I wonder if the visual improvement is going to be worth the effort. I think unsocbl has a great idea, but is also correct that it may take a long, long, long, long long time!
Not trying to rain on your parade, though. PLEASE if you do it, post some pics!
Cheers!

That's actually a good point wingman75. I might have to add drain holes or use that as an excuse to see if I can easily make the ducts functional.
A square chisel mortiser would work well, if I can find a proper attatchment for the drill press I'll be using. Also because this is plastic and not wood, a blow torch might be needed to help the chisel cut through the plastic.
I've been rearching laser cutting after initially dismissing the cost, and apperently you only need a relativly weak laser to cut plastic cleanly. The cost is also very cheep ($80 for both sides). yay
The limitations with plastics here are that the part cannot be made of two materials, PVC and Vynel. The depth is reasonably computer controled so the patern won't come out of the back.
Unfortunatly PVC and Vynel are two frequently used materials in the car industry. Does anyone know what our grills/scoop inserts are specifically made of?

Water jet would be better than a laser with plastics.
We get water jet cut 1/4" and 1/2" plexiglass cut
here at work and there is no heat generated with
the water jet as it would be with the laser.

I'm having a hard time finding a waterjet cutting scervice, do you have anything to recommend? I do agree that a waterjet cut would turn out the best.
