I'm going this weekend to look at a 2003 mustang coupe. It has about 78,000 miles and the dealership is asking $9,000.  With this many miles and price tag what type of questions should I be asking ? What type of things should I be concerned about (if any).  Any advice would help, I've never owned a mustang before so I'm a novice at this stuff.

Thanks!

k well first off get a carfax report... you wanna know right away if its been in an accident

second you want to check under the car to make sure its not leaking anything

make sure that EVERYTHING inside the car that is powered works (trust me on this it cost me a deductible the day after cause my select button was busted)... windows, locks, radio, cruise control, ect...

check the interior for rips/stains make sure to check under the mats as well as they like to hide stuff with new ones.

take it for a test drive. open it up and make sure it picks up and sounds good (im paranoid about this and will actually have somebody rev it in park for me so that i can tell if there is anything wrong with exhaust or under the hood)

when it comes to money. offer them 4k when he says no beans be all... its only a sixer.  heres how you want it to go

you- ill give ya 4 thousand for it
salesman- this car is worth a lot more than 4 ... hell your pushin it getting it at 9k
you- things got no balls, the paint has spiderwebs in it there are stains in the backseat and it has nearly 75k on the odometer
salesman- ITS A MUSTANG and there is nothing wrong with the paint or stains and 75k isnt much for this old of a car
you- 75k isnt a lot of miles? things 3 years old should have like 50k on it and its still slow as hell
salesman- fine 8500
you- no.... ill give you 1k for every cylinder that engine has, 6k or i walk
salesman- well i cant sell it to you for that.
you- this is the point where you literally have to walk out the door and leave

he will either come after you call you the next day or you will walk

most likely though he will cave as he needs to meet his quota for the month and needs commission

if not i say take out a loan for the same amount and get a gt

/shrug

Theyre asking way  too much for it . You can get one for 50 K miles at around 4-6k pricetag. Look around for some more. If I was u I would look on craigslist or around in local ads for a GT or a Cobra. For that money u can buy a V8

salesman- Its almost 4 years now...according to your math it should have around 66k on it....it is only 9 thousand over.
you- no.... ill give you 1k for every cylinder that engine has, 6k or i walk
salesman- grow up...

Find a local fourm and post in the WTB section, you will find way better deals. I just looked and a 01 Bullitt just sold for $10k and has 80k. You can find way better deals than at a dealership.

+1.
It looks nice, but there are better deals out there. If money/financing is the issue and you have to go through a dealership, go to a Ford dealer and find something. You're definitely going to get mark-up at a Honda dealership.

Thanks for all the great feedback everyone.  Yes money financing is the major issue for me, my credit is less than perfect to say the least.  9k is what they are asking but ill see to what i can take them down too this weekend, I'm pretty confident I can get it for cheaper after talking to them for a bit.   I'll let yall know how it goes.

Thanks again!
