Hello.
2001 GT / Convt. / 70K miles
Started having engine noise a few weeks ago. Noise got louder. Took to service (at dealer) and they said the engine is dying. Sounds like cylinders they said.  I tried to trade-in the car and the appraiser said the engine has a blown gasket. Didn't event want to accept the car for a trade. Another dealer offered $1100 for the car.  The service rep said a reman engine repair would cost me about $4500.  Car is turning off on me while driving...

What would you suggest I do? Fix the car for about $2-3K then sell it? Give it up for $1100?  I am very dissapointed since I am the only owner and I don't think I should be having this engine problem in the first place.

Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks.

theres no way i would except 1100 for a 01 GT vert even if it were missing the engine/trans. That car should book for around 10K. Dont believe anything theese guys tell you. If it is just a head gasket its not a hard fix. First of all find out exactly what is wrong with it then shop around and get some estimates. Good luck

Yeah, don't listen to those guys, they'll make you feel like they got you by the balls and try to rob you. Chances are it's something you can repair within your budget. Hard to be certain until you find out what's wrong with it

That's what my gut feeling said... I just don't know much about this.  I'm in New Jersey (north) and  I couldn't find a repair shop that would want to deal with my engine problem. Everywhere I went they said they had to open the engine and they didn't do that kind of repair. They referred me to the dealer. I feel stuck.  The dealer said tha t just for 'opening' the engine it would be about $400-500. Since they estimate it is a cylinder head problem they said it would be 2-3k to fix but they suggest a reman engine for about 4500.

I found this posting that although mentions cobra it may be related http://forums.modulardepot.com/4-6l-2v-tech/644-2001-2004-4-6l-cylinder-head-problems.html but I am not an expert at this and I don't know what 2v means.

I figured I'd post a followup...

I had my car parked in my garage ever since my last posting. Summer is almost here and I found a performance shop to fix it.  They opened it and saw that the timing chain had big slack, guides looked bad, cover was cracked and something else that came in pairs needed to be replaced. Estimate @ $1500 (parts&labor). What do you think? At this point I am so anxious that I already approved the repair and am waiting. But still would like to know if I got gipped because I plan to do some mods in the near future and want to decide if I use the same shop.

Thanks.

1500's not bad at all it sounds like a decent amount of work, usually just tearing down the top end of the motor will cost at least 1000

More bad news came in...

I was just informed that he found a cracked rocker arm and metal in the oil pan.  He said it is best to swap the engine and he could get a used engine to swap.  All work parts/labor for $2400.

This has gone to the direction it was headed from the beginning...

What do you think I should do?

Really appreciate the feedback.

If I could get paid for every time someone has told me 'how did that happen'....  I wish I knew. But at this point, I don't care, I just want to figure out what to do next.

Would you just have the engine swapped with a used one for $2400? If so, what can I do with the old engine? He says there is a warranty on the used engine but I am not sure about that.  The current engine he says is junk and worth nothing.

What do you think?
I am fed up with this and want to get this over with.  Thanks.
