My dad taught me how to powershift before I was old enough to even have a drivers license. You shift at high rpm's without using the clutch.

Do you let off the gas?

Default RE: Embarrasing question

Powershifting (a.k.a. flat shifting, full throttle shift, or clutchless shift) is a method of shifting used with manual transmissions to reduce the time where the driving wheels are not powered.
Unlike a normal gearchange in a manual transmission, a powershift does not utilize the clutch at all. Instead, the gear lever is "ripped" from gear to gear. If tried with a road car, this can cause catastrophic damage if not selected in the right RPM range, especially if the gearbox doesn't have synchromesh.
This type of shifting is mainly used in racing applications with gearboxes that have been specifically designed for this purpose. In this application, powershifting does not put very much strain on the transmission; most of the stress is absorbed by the clutch and the rear differential.[citation needed] This is one of the reasons manual transmission cars break the differential more often than automatics.[citation needed]
On cars with freewheel, powershifting is common.

What is the right RPM range for our cars and do you let off thegas at all?

Hold those thoughts young man. Don't use your new Stang to learn powershifting.

Some people call powershifting... shifting when you are using the clutch but do not let up on the gasduring shifts. This is done all the time. I wouldnt try shifting without the clutch, seems to me that it could be nasty.

You do not want to power shift in a daily driver. If you want to learn better shifting techniques, learn rev matching your downshifts, then heel toe, then double clutching. These techniques are mainly used for track racing though
