It's at small machine shop today. They're looking it over and will tell me what it will take to fix it. I know the guys, so I don't expect them to try to rip me and say it's gonna take $6k. We'll see what they say and I'll let you guys know. Thanks a lot for the input.
Well, I was told that the rebuild kit was around $2,000 and labor $1500. I've known these guys a long time and I don't think they would try to screw me but it looks like I'm about to be out $3500. They said the labor of having to pull the engine was costly.
It may be because of the whole 4V thing. They told me that if it was a GT they could do it for $1500 total, and if it was a 96-98 Cobra about $2300. But because the overhaul kit (i think that's right) is $2000 that they would still have to charge $1500 labor.
In other words he said they would put "better" rod bearings, main bearings and piston rings so that I shouldn't have much to worry about unless I'm hot lapping it every weekend, to which I doubt it'll ever see a drag strip. And, whatever "better" means.
Well, I finally got my car back. New Pistons, rings, valve guides, main bearings, rod bearings, oil pump, water pump, clutch and pressure plate and a few other goodies. Cost me $4100 but at least I have my car back after about 5 weeks.
Yeah, no more smoking. Well, it did the first day I had it back because of the oil that had gotten into my SLP exhaust...but it's burned off now and the only smoking I'm doing is from 25 degree weather.
