Next Upgrade?

Tylor -> Next Upgrade? (10/20/2007 11:15:06 AM)

Hey,
I have a 1976 Mach1 302 5L. I have currently added a 4 barrel carb, and hooker headers. Now would a camshaft and intake be a good idea? I should also note that this will be nearly a daily driver except in winter, and I'm going to school so I dont have too much to spend. Thanks for any replies.

definitely if it's going to be a daily driver. Most of us here are going to suggest a Weiand Stealth intake; but as far as a cam choice goes, i'm not sure. i have a roller block so all i've really shopped for are roller cams. But for the best driveability you should get a custom cam. You'll probably pay anywhere from $50 to $150 more than an off the shelf cam but having a cam ground to work with your set up will give you more horses and better gas mileage and driveability.

Will I need any supporting mods for the cam?

it all depends on how big of a cam you get. you can use something in the .475 lift or lower range with stock springs and everything will be fine. if you decide to go larger than that you run into spring pressure and binding issues. now, to be safe i would not recommend using anything larger than .450 with stock springs but thats just me.

the wieand action plus (model 8124) is a brand new design from them and is rumored to be the best low / mid range intake available for a small block ford.

Hey thanks for the reply. Would a .45 lift give me a reasonable power increase? (I'm not very educated in car mechanics but is becoming a hobby) Or would it be worth it to spend the extra money on some  tougher springs and new bushings? (cost?)

yes, you would get a substantial increase in performance. the stock cams in those things are really really pathetic.

that would be a great cam, its not dual pattern (dual pattern = better technology = more power) but its still a huge step up.
