Default SPEED OF SOUND BETA TEST OF SINGLE POD INSTALL

Since I hang around here a bunch and dont see u guys in some of the other sections I thought I'd post this hear as well.....

Well first I'd like to thank Alan @ SOS for giving me the opportunity to test a product that SOS will roll out some time in early 2008.
I was fortunate enough to be selected to test this new set up. Alan was aware of my constant request for something a little different and I think came out very well.

I matched up two single SOS pods with the Aeroforce Tech Scan Gauges.
Heres how it went. Placement decision. I spent about 30 mins on two occasions to get the spot down.

Taking out the Instrument Cluster:
Pulled the fascia right off to get to the cluster.

Cluster out:
Very easy, 4 - 7mm bolts, the bottom right is a bit hard to get too, you need a small ratchet or driver. Then one connection to flip and remove.

After I placed the pods I taped off the outline with painters tape to keep the spot static. I also taped the pod and pedestal together to keep them from moving around.

Using a Dremel Stylus I then drilled a hole in the pedestal for a screw and cut a hole wiring. Once drilled I placed the pod over the dash an marked the spot on the dash using a sharp point thru the hole in the pods. Then I used a Dremel Stylus to cut the dash for the screw and the Aeroforce wiring.

We then set the pod in place and pulled the wiring. The Aeroforce plugs into the OBD port and there is plenty of room behind the dash to snake the wires up. We used a wire tie to hold the wires to a bundle under the dash and just passed them up to the cluster area. Then pulled them up thru the dash and into the pods. Then a screw thru the bottom of the dash into the pods to keep them in place. I used a #6 x 1 1/4" screw ( I could have used a 1" but had not bought one) I also used a #60 size 'O' ring and a lock washer on the underside of the dash and in the pod to reduce any vibrations and curvature issues.

Both placed and being locked down: Not a lot of room to work with as the dash folds over on itself.

Gauges in:

Then I reinstalled the cluster and fascia. Final results:

I'd like to thank my friend Jon for helping out.

Not a bad install, not really my taste though. Any specific reason you put them right there in the middle of your vision? That would get really distracting to me.

The best method that I ever found if you want to mount gauges in your forward vision is the pod mounts that replace the trim around your gauge cluster. Here's an example on a Subaru:

http://us.st11.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.c..._1968_17946963
^^ It's the gauges in front of the steering wheel, not the ones over the clock.

Or if you wanna be real baller status, display them through a GBA like on my old STi

I liked the HUD look... I dont think that they affect my line of site at all. At least from the placement work I did. Additionally it was a bit easier to install in the middle

Nope.... New York.. they are outside of Memphis if I recollect. They are a sponsor on another board I frequent and Alan saw my request over and over again for something this this and ask me if I wanted to do the testing.

Ok, I'm getting old and all so can't see what you're monitoring through these gauges? Since they interface with the OBDII port I'm guessing they monitor a lot of things. Can you be specific?
I don't think you're monitoring boost either right now?

Erik,

no boost for now... you need to add a MAP sensor for that and I just didnt bother. they can monitor about 40+ different functions from the OBD port. they also have two analog inputs each to read other things that you need to add senors for.

for now I have IAT/Coolant Temp Fuel pressure and fuel pump duty cycle.
