i have my back window tinted. and it's important to point out that it's lasted me for 6 years, and it wasn't until this past summer that i started to see bubbles (pretty impressive stretch!).
i decided to remove the tint, but because it's so old, the tint peeled off so easily, leaving behind the layer of glue. that glue wasn't coming up with the tint if its life depended on it!
is there anything i can use to remove the glue aside from scraping? i've read that i could use lacquer thinner or ammonia, but i'd like to NOT suffocate myself during this process - anything a little gentler or milder you could suggest?
has anyone else had this problem with *really* old tint?
this may be a stretch but i spent my summer fabricating parts in a machine shop for a pharmaceutical company...whenever i needed to take any kind of adhesive off a part, i used ethyl alcohol. this stuff might be difficutly to find but once you do, you can just dab some on a cotton dab and dissolve the glue. i know this is a stretch but might be worth a try...
the MIRACLE that worked... ** acetone ** !! AKA nail polish remover. it's cheap, readily available, and it worked wonders! it's amazing. only downside was the smell of course, but i did it on a sunny, windy day with the doors and windows open. it was at least bearable (but most products that would accomplish this job also smell bad, so it's a negative that's hard to avoid).
nothing beats the results! i'd like to do it one more time to make sure i've got every last bit. then wipe the window down with plain water, and then with Windex. easily done in one day.
