Former police officer here. I can not tell you how many speeding tickets I gave out to people with Detectors sitting on the dash. Now, radar does not transmit continuously. Used to, radar would transmit continuously which is how the radar detector found the cops. Now, however, the newer radar systems have pulse buttons on it. So, the radar gun does not send out any signal at all until the cop pushes the transmit button after seeing you. Then, it is too late. He has his reading and you have your ticket.

Point taken, but they do pick up signals of cops coming over hills. Mine has saved me numerous times when I was going enough over for a cop to stop me.

There is an art to using a radar detector. If you don't know how and when to use it, no matter how good it is, you will still get OWNED.
^^^^^^^ This is very true, and also as rednblackdawg said they have a pulse button on their radar guns, so the only way to decect this is to have someone else in front of you that the cop clocks and you will pick up his radar. On the highway I will try and find someone that is going as fast as I am of faster and sit a little way behind them and in the right hand lane if he continues to drive in the left, that way if the cop in in the middle of the road (which is where they usually are) the other guy will get clocked first and if you are in the right position (about 2-3 car lenghts behind and to the right) the radar is blocked by his car and you are safe. I have driven this way for years and it totally works. But as code3 said it does take a while to learn how to use the rader diector. BTW I have a Bel 995 and love it, has saved me from a few tickets!!! well worth the money IMO if you have a heavy foot

You will still pick up the cops with the older systems, but if a cop has a pulse system and is not transmitting when he tops that hill, it will not pick him up. Best way to combat that is to stay just behind a group of cars and when he pulses them, your detector may pick up some of the stray signal.

BINGO. That is how you do it. Remember, radar only tells the cop how fast the largest and/ or closest target is. If you can "hide" behind someone or in a group, your golden. Just be careful. We used to set up running radar at one intersection and about a quarter mile away we would station another car to pick up those people who were hiding behind other cars.

Thats all fine and dandy, but my Valentine picks it up so far away that it will pick up stray radar signals from the car you're currently clocking. So they do work. Saved me 10,000,000 times. I've had a radar detector in my cars for over 10 years. I've had many different ones. I was sold on the Passports, but after getting the Valentine. Man...There is no comparison. It also does a WAY better job of filtering out the false signals so you're not locking up the brakes for no reason.
Save your money cheif. The spray on a laser gun is so small that he would actually have to hit the detector or jammer for that to work. The spread is just over an inch wide. Odds are that thing will never jam a radar signal.
But what do I know. Let me know if it works if you buy one.

10,000,000 times. Wow. I would not have the patience to keep up with it for that long. Once I got over a couple of thousand, I would have lost interest in counting. LOL. Seriously, I have heard nothing but good things from the Valentine. If you get one that is good enough to pick up the stray signals from cops far away, it could save you . Just watch it going around blind curves. One thing I learned in radar school and through experience is blind curves are great hunting grounds because a doppler signal is a line of sight signal and reflects instead of travelling around curves.

Hope I'm not digging up an old topic, but great topic. I never heard of these brands -- guess I need to start shopping at places other than Circuit ****ty and Worst Buy.
rednblackdawg's former cop post coincides with an experience I had -- 3 cop cars parked at the bottom of a hill (sharing some donuts), no signal from my Cobra detector. Then at visual range the laser frequency lit up -- I hit my breaks, but I wasn't speeding that bad anyway. But it was obvious the cop was pointing a laser at me and may have locked in my speed at that instant. It would have been hard to avoid that if I were really speeding.
Another time the detector was going off big time, this time one of the radio bands. His lights were out, parked in stealth mode. I should have stopped and ask him what kind he was using lol but it was obvious he was using the active speed detector where you see the speed and push a button to lock that speed in. I came back down the road again and he had pulled someone else over.
Of course, radar detectors are just one of many "hints" to alert you. You have to be using your other senses as well. It's really just a fun toy, and it IS actually nice when it alerts you of emergemcy EMS/Fire vehicals. They get mad at us for being in the way, well sometimes we don't see or hear them! I don't know why detectors are illegal some places.
i had a whistler and it sucked, i thought hey a radar detector is a radar dector right? well i was wrong. i dont think that thing worked once for me, all it picked up was automatic doors. anyway i sold it for more than i paid tol the kid it worked real good.
Passport 8500 has saved my butt on quite a few occasions. I make an effort not to be at the front of a pack of cars, so everyone else is just functioning as extensions of my detector. Cops using K and Ka are easy to pick up, however the laser still scares me crapless. On the 8500, X, K, and Ka all have distinct alert tones, but the laser alert is just a loud screeching "you're screwed now" type of sound. Scares me every time. Laser is the hardest to pickup being as it is such a narrow beam and you don't really get any residuals off of other cars. Not too many laser units where I live apparently though, I can count the amount of times I've been lasered in the past 2 years on one hand.
I've only gotten one ticket with the 8500, and that was because I had my music up too loud and didn't hear it go off. My fault, not the detectors. I love that thing.

FYI: Bel = Escort (Escort bought them out and they use identical technology)
i thought this was so when i realized that there performance meters were the EXACT same thing only a different body style and different location for the buttons

Me and a friend have a joke aobut the worst radar detector that should be made, when it sense falshing lights it should say in a nice voice "you have a ticket"
But back on topic
I have the V1 and i swear by it its so nice picks up signals well in advance for me. The arrows are very convient
I have a V1 and its great. I dont think you can get them anywhere but on the net. I was going on a snowboarding trip two months ago and got a KA hit as soon as I got on the highway. It kept going off for several miles until I reached the trap. Great range. The only problem is new chevy trailblazers brake lights set off the laser band everytime Im behind one. It has save me 10,000,000,000 times and is worth every penny. Yes I kept count.
i have the passport 8500, the red version (the blue version is the exact same other than more expensive, and the meret is lighted blue, instead of red). it works great. it does pick up some cop cars when they are driving by me and stuff, but sometimes i will drive by one, and it won't go off it all. i'm not sure why, can anyone explain that? but for they money, i think the passport 8500 is the best buy. it's not quite the V1, but its like $200 cheaper.
