I ordered a 2007 Mustang GT premium and took stock over 4th of July weekend. A couple of weeks later I put new tires and wheels on - Rikon Raptors and Shelby wheels - 18's. Almost immediately after having them put on my steering wheel started shaking when I hit 50 mph and it got worse over a few weeks. I took the car to a tire place to have them balanced but that didn't work. I took it to a different place to see if the tires were warped and/or the wheels were bent but they are fine. I ended up taking the car back to the place I got them (the specialize in after market but they are really far away) - whatever they did worked and everything was good for a couple of weeks. But now my steering wheel shakes so bad I almost have a hard time holding on - it's getting worse every time I drive it. I'm going to take the car back again to switch the tires out to BF Goodrich (that's what they recommended) - but it's practically the same tire so I'm not sure that will fix the issue. I've also taken the car back to the dealership and the alignment is fine.

Any suggestions on what could be causing this? I did not have this problem until I switched everything out - but I'm ruling out balancing and everything else I've had checked over and over again. I don't really want to go in sounding ignorant but I don't have a lot of experience with tires and wheels!

Thanks!

IF the alignment and the tire balance is good then it's possible it is the tires so if they will swap out the tires for bfg's I'd do it. What size tires are they? Becausethey might be rubbing if they are too big.

The tires are larger than what came with the car. They are either 255/45ZR/18 or 245/45ZR/18. The place that put them on said they put those tires on Mustangs all of the time and has never had a problem - that's why I was thinking it could be something wrong with the car itself.

I think the Riken Raptors are made by BF Goodrich - it's like their generic - so I'm basically getting the same tire just with BF Goodrich on it. That's my concern.

Is there any other tire brand that works good on Mustangs? I had a Roush that had Goodyear and I never had a problem with those...

Thanks!

Well it could be that you just gota bad set of tires on the front of your car. Might try swaping the tires from the back to the front. the only other thing  can think of would be worn part in the steering system. tie rod ends ball joints but you said you had the alignment checked so they should have checked the parts.

The alignment was fine when I had it checked.

Do you think it's the size of the tire? I looked and they are 255/45ZR/18 - and every website I've looked at recommends 235/50 for Mustangs. Not sure if it has anything to do with it - but I would hate to pay more for the same size BF Goodrich and have the same problem! But I guess I won't know until I get them switched out!

Thanks for chatting!

Tracey

try taking the tires from the back and putting them on the front. If the shaking stops then you know you have bad tires or wheels on the front. You should be able to have it done at a local tire shop. I would try this next if they didn't do it yet.

Did you solve the problem?  I don't have this dillema but at least I'll know in the future what to do.

I'm so far so good but it's too soon to tell. I had BF Goodrich G-Force tires put on yesterday and even though this sounds weird - I love the tread on the tires! Makes my car look even beefier. If that makes any sense!

I will come back and update in a week or so. That's about how long it took before the steering wheel started shaking in the past. I'm really hoping that these tires work well - with the Riken tires I had them looked at 7 times! Very frustrating!

Thanks for checking.....I'll be back soon!

I am having the exact same problem! As soon as I put my new 18" rims and tires on and hit 50mph my steering wheel starts to shake. I have an 02 with 41,000mi. I you find the problem post it up and I will post if I find it. Someone told me to check my driveshaft u-joint, but yours is an 07 so I dont see that being a problem for you.
