I installed a K&N intake on a new Shelby GT500 and came up with a gain of around 30 rwhp. However, the engine was running lean (expected), but after a call to K&N they said that the car doesn't require a new tune and that the computer will self adjust. Does this sound right? I was under the impression that just about all the intakes for the S197's need a new tune.

Edit: Here's the response I received from K&N:

"Dear K&N Customer,

Thank you for your interest in K&N products. K&N only suggest leaving the negative battery cable unplug for two hours after installation, to reset the engine codes to learn the new air flow. If you have any further question please call our Customer Support Team at 1(800)858-3333 and an agent will be happy to assist you. Thank you for writing and have a great day."

I had a K&N intake as well and did not tune the car. They state its not necessary. Did you try the negative battery cable disconnect and you dont have to do it for 2 hrs either. Maybe 15-30 minutes to be safe. The computer should relearn everything and adj timing accordingly. Dont they claim a 50 HP increase on the GT500's?( I guess it would translate to 50 HP from the crank if you got 30 RWHP.) I have a GT with 500 HP and use the Whipple intake now but previously I did not get a tune and a few months after that I got dyno tuned to squeeze as much HP form the motor and the car was not running lean before the tune. i would think if a 30 rwhp gain is achieved by the CAI you should go ahead and get the tune..... there must be more HP laying on the table waiting for you.

afterthought - if a simple CAI achieves these gains why didnt ford/shelby use a CAI to begin with?

it probably would have scared the powers that be if they showed the GT500 made more than 500hp!
Anyway, I think it's sad that you buy that product for a nice, expensive car and they give you a standard form reply! Probably from some $3/hour guy in India!
