View Full Version : DIY: HOW TO Install Hood Pins $13.00... UPDATED!!!

So I stopped by Autozone and found the SPECTRE hood pins were only $7.99 compared to PEP-BOYS at $12.99. My Autozone didn't have the rubber lanyards, so I did have to drive to PEP-BOYS to get them at $4.99.

TOOLS/MATERIAL REQUIRED:
SPECTRE HOOD PINS AUTOZONE PART NUMBER 42563 ($7.99)
SPECTRE LANYARDS PEP-BOYS ($4.99) (Autozone part number 4264 but are $8.99)
TAPE
DRILL
1/2" DRILL BIT
1/4" DRILL BIT
1/8" DRILL BIT
FLAT HEAD SCREW DRIVER
PHILIPS SCREW DRIVER
SMALL ENOUGH SCREW DRIVER TO FIT THROUGH HOLES IN THE HOOD PINS (MORE LATER)
3/4" WRENCH
DREMEL WITH WHEEL
CAR WAX, PEANUT BUTTER, GREASE (1 OF THE 3 IS FINE)
RED LOCTITE
(NOTE: I didn't use a tape measure. I simplied used pre-marked areas that were on both sides. Made all the measuring a sinch.)

STEP 1:
Remove the 6 body pins that hold on the plastic radiator cover.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v637/Boozshey/hoodpins/STEP1.jpg

STEP 2:
There are 2 long seams in the support on the front rail. I used the inside ends on both sides to mark the spot for the hood pins. I started with a 1/4" hole then drilled the half inch hole.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v637/Boozshey/hoodpins/STEP3.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v637/Boozshey/hoodpins/STEP4.jpg

STEP 3:
I placed the hood pins in the location, but don't tighten down yet. You are only using them to make the marks for the holes in the hood.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v637/Boozshey/hoodpins/STEP5.jpg

STEP 4:
Tape the top side of the hood. I didn't know the exact spot so just guessed and covered a bigger area.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v637/Boozshey/hoodpins/STEP6.jpg

STEP 5:
Remove the under hood liner. Due to the shaker hood, to remove mine would be huge task, so I simply taped it back.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v637/Boozshey/hoodpins/STEP7.jpg

STEP 6:
Take some wax, peanut butter, grease, or whatever else you can find and place a small ball on top of the hood pin.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v637/Boozshey/hoodpins/STEP8.jpg

STEP 7:
Close the hood and press on both sides to allow the material from the hood pins to transfere to the underside of the hood.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v637/Boozshey/hoodpins/STEP9.jpg

STEP 8:
Drill from the bottom of the hood up. Start with the 1/4" bit and then the 1/2" bit.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v637/Boozshey/hoodpins/STEP10.jpg

STEP 9:
Sorry no pics of this. Just forgot... But...
Remove all the tape,
Install the under hood liner,
Close the hood and the hood pins will start to press through the liner,
Press harder and they will pop through giving you a nice hole,
Open the hood and just pull the extra material out of the under hood liner.

Step 10:
You will notice the holes might need to be bigger here and there. Just do what you need to do and make the hood pins fit through the holes without rubbing. No art here, just make the hole bigger.

STEP 11:
After makeing the holes bigger and the pins now fitting through the hood, you will have to adjust the height of the pins. THEY DO FIT... The bottom nut will only be holding about 3-4 threads. So get it set at the right height and get an idea of that position. Now take the pins off the car and loctite in the proper order to reassemble. Once you have them reassemble tighten the top bolt with a 3/4" wrench. To keep the pin from moving place a screw driver through the hole in the top of the hood pin.

Step 12:
Locate the spot weld to the left/right of the hood pins. I made a spot next to them since they are the same on boths sides. I drilled an 1/8" hole there and screwed in the lanyard.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v637/Boozshey/hoodpins/STEP11.jpg

STEP 13:
Place the radiator cover back on and mark the spots that need to be cut out. Dremel away...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v637/Boozshey/hoodpins/STEP12.jpg

STEP 14:
I chose to run the lanyard under this part to get rid of a lot of the extra slack. Turned out nice.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v637/Boozshey/hoodpins/STEP13.jpg

STEP 15:
Forgot pics again, but pretty easy...
Close the hood up and place the steal plates over the pins on the hood. TIP: DO ONE HOLE AND SCREW AT A TIME... Hold the plate in place and drill a 1/8" hole in the first spot. Screw it down and then repeat. If you try and drill all 4 holes first it won't align right. TRUST ME!!!

STEP 16:
Some have had problems with there still not being enough of the hood pin showing. To fix the problem, just lower the bump stops evenly to allow for more space. This will take some trial and error but make sure that you do both sides evenly. If you lower them to much though, your hood will not align with the fenders properly, but 1/2-1 full turn shouldn't make it so noticeable.

FINISHED PRODUCT!!!

boozshey - The hood pins look really good. Did you use anything to keep the holes in the hood from rusting (other than peanut butter:D)?? I really want to put pins on my stang but the thought of drilling into the hood or rust down the line keeps me from doing it. Also do you have to worry about the paint cracking or chipping when you drilled or is this somthing you avoid by drilling from the bottom up??

Well you could use a touch up paint on the inside edges of the holes. But the fit is pretty tight with the pins and I think it would eventually scratch away. Im not so worried about rust though. You see that huge hole I already have in the hood. Well that's been there for about 5 months now and there is no sign of rust.

As for the paint chipping. That's what the tape on the top was there for. But even if the hood was to chip a little bit, any inperfections will be covered by the plates.

I would say that NO ONE should be affraid of doing this, but then again, I cut a HUGE hole in my hood without thinking twice... :)

Has anyone tried these? I picked them up. They are all aluminum and are slotted so the pin slides back to release so no cable is needed. I like them because you can't scratch the hood.

Let me know what you think.

This isn't a totally true statement. Aluminum can rust.

In regards to this applicationt I, in fact ,have bubbling of the paint near the plates for my hood pins on both sides, so if you are looking to do this, I'd seal the edges.

aircare84
11-27-2007, 06:01 PM
Actually aluminum corrodes. Rust is just corrosion on steel.
Definatly paint or otherwise seal any exposed edges if you make holes in your hood.
I've worked with aluminum for over 30yrs now on aircraft. Any time we finish, we use a chemical called alodine to treat any exposed edges, etc. before priming & painting.
Highly recommend anyone cutting into your hood prime & paint any exposed edges before installing hood pin, scoops, etc.

I had the same hood pins on my old car for about a year and the pins and the circular plate both rusted. I would recommend getting stainless steel hood pins. JMO though

nice write-up. i got the same set. thought they say they dont rust, they do. i already had to replace them once. i'd go for ford oem pins if i could do it again. also, alluminum does rust (the hood), it just takes a hell of a lot more to get it to rust. ever leave a sheet of foil outside in the rain for about a week? it does rust...

We were on a long trip...very windy and when a semi passed going the opposite direction I thought we were gonna lose the damn hood....so thank-you for the write up Boozshey...followed it to the T & it worked perfect. Was going to seal them, but now we have snow & cold so I'll wait till spring. Here's a pic of mine on...

I would switch the way the pins face. So that the circles are in the middle of the car. Then the lanyards will lay better.

Other than that AWESOME!!!!

I just installed them myself and I only had one issue with the writeup. Even with the pins holding two or three threads on the bottom they were still not high enough for the pins to clear the hood. I ended up cutting two holes to insert the nut through that end up covered by the radiator cover, put the bottom nut inside the radiator support, and tightened it down that way. Other than that everything worked out just fine, great writeup.

If that happens which it won't for everyone. All you need to do it lower the stops. I will add that to the write-up to end any more confusion.

Heres some pics. No real problems during the install, just had to be careful with the drill! No lanyards yet, my local store had to order them. I noticed that it looks like the hood is indented where the metal plate is screwed on...is this typical or do i have the screws too tight or something? Thanks.

Update: put on the lanyards (they look amazing) and i fixed the little depression in the hood just by taking the metal plates off, cleaning the screw holes up with a dremel slightly wider than 1/8, then replacing the metal plates and screws.

For anyone interested. I never really cared for the look of the screws that came with the hood pin kit so I decided to replace them with 1/8" stainless steel short rivets. The look is really clean and they have a lesser chance of coming loose. Of course you will need to accept that they are a more permanent solution and can't be removed as easily.

Boozshey
04-18-2008, 06:50 PM
Just a little more permanant... :)

Also looks like you have done a lot to your car since the last time you posted in here.
