WRONG.... incase you couldnt tell Im a Police Officer, I was the 3rd RMP on the scene, after HP requested assistance to block the road off because the guy was dragged 100 yards sector cars were there to help.
Well ... I'm 40 ... and my 6 banger is my daily driver, has a decent stereo and A/C. Also allows me to take my son with me. I'll have an X-Charger installed someday ... the supercharger is definitely cheaper than a motorcycle. However, when I have the need for a little speed ... I hop on my Buell ... having both a car and a bike is the way to go ...

That thing is beautiful! What is that? I don't even like bikes that much and that is something I wouldn't mind having as a weekend toy.

Oh........ Your a cop !!! So becuase you were at an accident you feel that this guy shouldn't ride!! So with the same thinking you shouldn't be a cop since I feel bad for the family that has to be notified that you've been shot on the job! Silly right? Look Officer man life has risks if this kid was my son I would prefer to teach him to respect the bike and learn how to ride properly rather than trying to scare him with half assed facts that most likely never happen to him if he is safe. While your at it why don't you tell him never have sex since he may get sick too! Like I said I've been riding for 36 years and never broke a bone and I have many friends that haven't either. I do have some friends that are no longer with us too but it does happen. If we want a perfectly safe road we should all go back to model T's and dirt roads and even then we won't be safe. If the OP wants some advise on riding motorcycles he should consult guys that have experience riding not paranoid guys that don't know what they are talking about. Seems to me that you too have modded your car. Why do that if your not going to push the gas. IMO

in 4 years I have been to about 30 bike accidents, 80% were kids, and 90% were speeding/reckless. I dont care about human nature and how you tell someone to drive, I look at facts, and maybe you were one of the sane ones out there who respects the law, and safety but alot dont.
"rather than trying to scare him with half assed facts that most likely never happen to him if he is safe"
Ok drive drunk too! you may not get in an accident
I mod my car because I like it to look good, and sound nice. Does that mean I speed? No more than anyone else, and I have the upper hand because I went through EVOC, and after observing how people respond to traffic conditions I can tell how to handle the car safely.
"So with the same thinking you shouldn't be a cop since I feel bad for the family that has to be notified that you've been shot on the job! "
Im out there everynight putting my life on the line to save others NOT looking for a joy ride. You gave your oppinion, as Im giving mine.
Question- Have you ever opened your bike up? because all it takes is one time to wipe out.
oh well, have fun with whatever you decide, and think about your actions.

You have the upper hand cause yur a cop and won't get ticketed you have the same chance of getting hit as any one of us. Like I said before trying to discourage the the guy from riding responsably cause many don't is stupid. As for your example of "why not drive drunk cause you may not get into an accident" is equally stupid worries me that someone who gets paid to make resonable desicions can draw that paralel. Let me educate you ..... Driving drunk is ILLEGAL (look it up in your hand book). Riding a motorcycle is NOT even at 17. I encouraged the young man to learn how to ride and he agreed, but some how you have the need to rail road that because of your prejudice.

In FL if the bike is paid off you dont even need insurance. dont know about other states.
Ummm, I'm calling B.S here! I lived in Fl for 26 yrs, had two bikes...even if it's paid for you MUST carry LIABILITY....just in case you damage another person's property. It's ILLEGAL in FL to not have insurance no matter what you drive...I think even a boat now has to be insured, based on mass of 1700lbs or more.

I'm going to chime in here and stick my neck out. I too am a police officer. Been on the job for 13 years. You both have valid points. One of the best quotes I heard from an old timer is " The day you fail to respect speed, is the day it's going to hurt you" . One of the first fatal accidents I ever responded to involved a 1995 Cobra. It had crashed into a tree and disintegrated. The engine was 420 feet from the point of impact. The driver was in what was left of the trunk. I found the passenger about a half block down. I covered him with an emergency blanket so the kids leaving the high school couldn't see him. They estimated his speed at around 125 to 130 mph in a 35 mph zone. ( A SUV turned in front of him he lost control attempting to avoid him). What is most remarkable is that the passenger was a friend of mine and I did not even recognize him. At speeds in excess of 100 your leaving your life in the hands of God. With that being said the fatal accidents involving motorcycle's that I've responded to ( well over a hundred) half were caused by other peoples actions. The others by riders failing to respect the awesome power of machine between their legs ( majority late teen to mid 20 males). If I could only put the images I've seen into every riders mind half those accidents wouldn't occur. As you stated learn to ride responsibly and always wear your helmet. For those of you driving your cars in excess of 100 ( this includes me) Do it on a section of road where others aren't around to be part of your mishaps or cause you to have one.

And you're looking at EXTREMELY high performance bikes that can be a handful even for experienced adult riders why? So you get your maximum value from the safety course? You stated right up front your major goal isn't to enjoy the scenery or bask in the fresh air. It's to go FAST......
By all means, listen to the bike enthusiast who admits himself that when he was your age he had a bike that was as far from what you're contemplating buying as a Honda Civic is from a top fuel dragster. Don't listen to the police officer who has the unfortunate job of having to pick up what's left after some kid has too much "fun" on one of these racing machines that just happens to have a license plate, and ends up a smear on the pavement.... no, go with the guy telling you what you want to hear.
It is a fact, supported by much research, that teens simply do not have fully developed brains. The areas that govern judgement and impulse control are not fully functional at your age (google teen brain development since you won't believe me). Combine impulsiveness, sketchy judgement and a machine that can get you killed in a split second with a single flick of your wrist, and you have a recipe for unfortunate consequences.
You're going to do what you're going to do (that's part of the teen mindset too) I just hope it doesn't cost you and your family dearly.

I'm from FL, had 2 motorcycles that were owned out-right, registered and on the road. Insurance was not mandatory for them and I didn't have them on any policy. That was a few years ago, maybe something has changed and it's NOW required, but it wasn't back then.

Good luck with the bike (whichever you get).
I drive about 200 miles a day in my stang and almost every day, there is some idiot that cuts me off, swerves to avoid something, wanders over the line (because they are changing a radio station) or remembers "oh, thats my exit!" and slams on the brakes.
Now, I'm driving a car. I can't imagine how fast and precise MY reactions would have to be while riding a bike.
These are skills learned over time. Like knowing when someone is going to swerve because they are running up on someone entering the highway. Ya, it might sound obvious, but it becomes second nature after a while.
A "fender-bender" in a car results in some body work in an auto shop.
A "fender-bender" on a bike results in some body work in the operating room.
Most of the accidents I have ever been in were the result of someone else making a bad decision (I'll be honest, I was going a bit too fast and I ditched my ride instead of slamming someone else once).
I'll keep an eye out for you and your friends. And do put loud exhaust on your bike. It DOES help us "old folks" know you are there.
