How do I tell if my '86 LX is a V6 or a V8? Are all LX's V6's? If it was a 5.0 would it for sure have the "5.0" badge?

Some LX's were 4 cyl 2.3s...I had a 85 LX that was a 2.3...

Just look at the ****in' engine. If you see three exhaust ports on each side, it's a V6. If you see four, it's a V8. And I'm pretty sure the 5.0's said "5.0 H.O" on the top of the intake manifold. Don't quote me on that.

get into the car

put they keys into the ignition

if (i doubt you do) have a clutch push it in a start it up

press the accelerator down and listen

if you dont hear a massive roar like god yelling then its not a 5.0

Ya, most engines can sound loud like that, so that doesn't help much. But I will go check the engine, thanks Xemeth.

first off if youve ever been in a parking lot and listened to cars youd know what a v8 sounds like
second, how the f*ck do you not know what it is? did you pop the hood? have you driven it? hell driving it would tell you what it is real quick!

Ya, I've driven it. But it's old as **** and the seals in the engine are, as a result, really old. So I thought that might effect something. No, I haven't popped the hood.

Is that the car in your sig?  Easy...its a 4cyl or 6.  Lack of exhaust tips give it away the easiest, your car has a single turndown style pipe under the bumper, on the drivers side im pretty sure, right?.  And if you had dumps or no exhaust of any kind on a 5.0, you'll notice.

In other words, your engine will not look like this:

I opened the hood, didn't know what I was seeing so came to ask. I no next to nothing about engines, so I came to ask for help. All you've done is ridicule me and be a prick. Cut me some slack. Forums are *for* asking questions. And asking opinions and discussion.

+ 1 bajillion

If it was a 5.0 you probably paid a few thousand. If it was a 4 or 6 cylinder, you probably could have bought one for a few hundred. Those cars are pretty worthless, except the SVO turbo 4cyl.

If it says 5.0 on the top of the engine, then it's a v8, 2.3 then it's a 4 cylinder, anything else and it's a v6.

Dude, pop the hood, take a pic and post it up. We'll tell you what you got. It is most likely a 4 or 6 though. If it's an inheretience car then I assume someone old owned it, so that actually makes it a very good canidate for a 5.0 swap and some real work. I'm sure the body and frame is perfect, old people tend to not tear stuff up.

Don't listen to the people giving you ****, most of them don't remeber that people aren't born knowing everything about everything, and even a few them still don't know **** but preach like they do.

Ryan

+1. Spoke is funny sometimes, though.

Actually, there's maybe a total of 4 or 5 people that frequent the sixer section that actually know something and are worth listening to on actual tech advice. The rest either know nothing more than exhaust and CAI's, or nothing at all.
