Default 302 Timing question

Checking the timing in my 66 with a 93 HO 302 in it.
I found TDC of #1 cylinder & the timing mark on HD is at the 0 mark so that must be OK.
Pulled the dizzy cap & I thinkthe rotor is supposed to be pointing at #1 terminal. Well it sorta is ponting that way. It is actually pointing directly between the #1 terminal and the terminal to the left (CCW) of it. Does that sound correct or should the rotor be pointing directly at the #1 terminal?

Guess I should add why I'm checking it.
The car starts great but it seems a little sluggish to me.
I checked the timing with a timing light & it was 19 degrees!! It never pinged though, not even under WOT and a 100 degree midday temperature. So that sounds weird to me. I would have bet it would have been pinging like crazy with that much timing (even with the 93 fuel I always run).

Hey Art,
I'm running, the generally accpted, 13d advance on my 5.0(EFI), what dizzy & induction are you using??
Is this a recent install, or have you had it running for a while??

I've had the car about 4 months & motor combo has been in about 1.5 years.
It has an old Edelbrock F4 dual plane & Holley 600. Dizzy looks like a reman 1966 & I put Pertronix I in it soon after I bought it.
I was wondering if the rotor not pointing directly at the #1 terminal is because of the 14 degrees advance I have right now. If so then I guess everything is in sync.
Think I should lower my timing some more?

Did you check it with or without the vacuum advance hooked up? You need to check it without

Every thing you have, seems to be correct, though the 12-14d advance is static. You are plugging off the vac advance to check inital timing?? With the engine running, total advance(withvac advance) could be 32-36d. If you have 16d total advance, there is lots more room to go.

I set it with the vacuum line disconnected.
With vac I think it was about 30-35 at about 3000 RPM.
Another question. The PO had the dizzy vac advance line connected to the full vacuum port on the Holley. I looked at the Holley manual & the port for the dizzy vacuum was blocked off. I switched it so the dizzy is hooked to the port Holley says is for the dizzy. Couldn't really tell a difference when driving.

Sounds right then.
Art a side question. When you swapped the dizzy, did you use a drive gear compatible with the EFI cam?? Dizzy drives for flat tappet cams, will get chewed up, when used on a roller lifter cam.
Mallory sells drive gears for both.... Hehheh, just checkin.

Art, when you static time an engine you rotate the dist housing (and cap) in relation to the rotor position. Thus you get advance or retard in reference to #1 plug firing. 19 static is probably too much advance (I'm surprised it's not pinging something fierce) but apparently the engine will take it. Back it off to 12 and see if it responds better.

The dizzy has the correct gear for the roller cam (I think it's harder than the older one?).
I retimed to 12 degrees & I am getting ready to drive her to work.
I'll post later from work & give a performance update.
Thanks for all the help guys.
