Default 1983 GLX Convertible trouble

Ok this is my son's car.

Kinduva beater but it gets around.

Convertible top was working just fine and dandy.

Somehow the switch got busted underneath the dash board.

Went to the junkyard and found a replacement.

Here is the deal:

For some odd reason, when you hit the switch (going up or going down) it goes for a second then stops.

There is no rhyme and reason to how long it takes to get the top up or down.

It usually takes 3-6 minutes of hitting the button, waiting, and hitting the button again.

We can hear the motor running and then it just STOPS.

When it stops we have to wait about a minute to hit the button again before the motor will kick back on.

Any help is appreciated!

Default RE: 1983 GLX Convertible trouble

Not sure on the 83's, and elaborate on the GLX please, not sure what model that is. But there should be a relay located somewhere that is conrolled by the switch. Did the original switch suffer physical damage or just quit working? If is quit working, your trouble may be something other than the switch. A quick test should be able to determine that. Come over to the Convertible sub forum located under General Tech. Someone should be able to help you out and give you the location of the relay.
