Hey everyone. I have a 1996 V6 and want to increase performance and power - - pretty much make it a head turner. After talking with several people, both at this site and personal contacts, it has come to my attention that the consensus is to change the suspension and brakes first, then work on the horsepower and upgrades. Would anyone agree or disagree with this? If you agree, I would like to start the suspension and brakes soon and was looking for direction on the best after market suspension to get (vendors?) and brakes (I was leaning towards the cobra brake kit). I appreciate any help. thanks.

FRPP sells a 01 Bullit GT suspension package that should work on your car. New shock/struts, springd, and swaybars, for $450 from http://www.buyfordracing.com.Look it up online for exact applications/specs.The Cobra breaks would need 17 inch wheels.

You can do em at the same time. Performance mod and then some suspension work one month, then another mod andmore suspension, then once you start putting down enough power or doing big enough mods ie. forced induction, do the brakes. You won't need to drop 2k on some better breaks if you are just adding 5 or 10hp. But definitely do the brakes eventually. I notice a lot of people never mention them, but every other car forum I've been on and every magazine I've read, people always recommend upgrading brakes. A common saying around here is "What good is all the power if you can't put it to the ground?" in regards to suspension, which makes sense. But my thing has always been, what good is having all that power if you can't stop the car?
What kind of brakes are the Cobras? Ie. how many pistons, size rotors, etc? Depending on the cost, you could also look into some aftermarket brembo or wilwood brakes. Last car I had they were a little over a grand for both, so they should be about the same for most cars price wise.
Cobra breaks have 13" rotors and cost $330-350 for the front two, pretty good upgrade for pre 05 GT's(at least SN95's)and V6's. The suspensenion package I mentioned comes with everyting you need in one package for a great price. Ask the guys in the Bullit sub-forum how their cars handle. I am currently considering the package Bullit suspension for my car. It is nothing to specialized, but should work great on a car driven mostly on the road.
That being said, I can't really see a few bolt-ons mandating suspension/break upgrade right away. Even with dual exahust, CAI, programmer. (for example) I think the car would still be safely with in its limits, and still apply the power when launched. Gears and a T-Lok would be a good way to increase performance/traction at the same time.

Id go with the breaks and suspension simply for the practicallity of it.
Your car will go fast and it will get you into trouble buta good set of brakes will help you avoid alot of that.
True, bigger break can help avoid some situations, but you can't fix stupid. Stock or modified. Please be smart about speed with or without power adding mods.

Cobra brakes use larger 2 piston PRB calipers. Stock 13" front Cobras will be more than any street drive V6 will ever need. You need the caliper, the larger rotors and new stainless steel lines. The install can be done at home in an afternoon without an issue.
You will need 17" wheels - and get a 17" spare as well. Sucks to have a flat and no way to put the spare on due to large brakes.

Suspension, Brakes, Stroked, and Boost.
If you had a flatyou could putthe spare on the back and move the 17 wheel up to the front, if it was flat.
Correction: The front Cobra breaks from buyfordracing.com are $400, but they also have Mach 1 breaks for the front. They cost $350, and I think thay are similar as far as stopping power goes.
