Default '96 V6 3.8L mustang water pump

ok so I posted a few weeks back about my mustang overheating, and I've actually gotten under there and looked. come to find out my water pump leaks like hell and my fan isnt turning.

so we took the belts off and are trying to loosen the bolts on the spindel for the water pump, but cant seem to loosen them because it keeps spinning.

should we use a vice? or should we use wrenches on 2 opposite bolts, tightening one while loosening the other?

any help would be much appreciated. I already have the water pump and everything, just cant seem to get the sucker off.

thanks again.

You should leave the belts on till the bolts are loose, the belt helps hold the pulley.

What i did was use two wrenches going opposite directions to get the first bolt off, then i stuch a big-old screw driver through the hole where the first one was, and used it to lock the wheel in place. works every time lol

thanks for the quick response, my boss at work also told me that I could take the water pump off and then take the spinning pulley off, holding it with a vice grip or something similar. Also a possibility?

thanks again

the pulley only, but not the shaft, that is part of the pump. I am just trying to follow what u are saying. look at the new pump and you will see what you need to remove.

Leave the belt on then take off the waterpump pulley, very simple and very easy to do.

Wrap the belt arround the pulley and have a friend hold in place with a pair of pliers while you work at the nuts.

I think you get the gist of the advice. pop the pulley bolts with the water pump still mounted on the engine. whether you are able to use the belt, slide a screwdriver across two bolt heads (advised by Haynes), or do the opposite wrench technique, you will have best success if you literally pop the bolt free. A quick jerk will work better than a steady pressure, which causes you to lose your grip on the pulley.

enough talk. get to work.
