My 2000 Mustang has a high pitched whine when accelerating. It's not really noticable in 1st or 2nd gear but shift to 3rd and start getting around 40 mph or more and the whine really starts. If I let off the gas then it goes away.
I changed the differential fluid thinking it was low or something. It had fluid and I replaced it and filled the differential back up with Royal Purple 75W-140. I inspected the gears while I had the cover off and did not notice any wear on the gears or metal shavings in the differential housing....and the whine is still there. Its really noticable around 40mph or faster.
There is avery small leak behind the yoke from theseal on the differential, but I don't think that is causing the whine. That seal is getting replaced very soon too.
I don't have a clue what could be causing this. I was hoping some of you might have an idea what this whine might be!
2000 Mustang V6
5 spd manual
17" rims
rear-end has T-lok but not sure if it's a 7.5 or 8.8 rear-end. Previous owner did some mods to the car.
Thanks for your help!

its the sub-block blower. because theyre mounted in the block, its hard to hear them before you reach a significant speed, which is like you said, usually around 3rd gear.

If itswhat speed your atthen how come I get the same exact thing but if Im in a different gear at that speed I dont hear it? I think its beacuse of 3rd gear itself. I read somewhere thats its the most spreadable gear or the furthest away for something. I forgot though.
The Royal Purple differential fluid has traction modifier in it that meets the Ford specs, so I am good to go there. It was making the whining noise before the change and is still making it after the fluid change. I am at a loss for what could be making it but it does seem to be coming from the rear half of the car.
The whine is there or very audiable from 3rd gearthru 5th gear from around 30 mph on up....it's just SUPER loud around 40mph up till around 50mph but it's still there however fast I go in 3rd, 4th, or 5th gear.
Has it always made that noise or is it a recent development? Could be that the gears spacing/backlash and all weren't set correct and now that it's settling it is making noise. If it's coming from the back of the car and is only happening at certain speeds really only means something in the rear end, that's the only thing I can think of that would fit those symptoms! So my bet goes on... something with the gears. Not sure, but might be helpful, does the shifter in the car vibrate more when the car is making the noise?
I had my girlfriend purchase the car while I was on deployment. I had the Ford dealership and a private mechanic check it out before the purchase. Said the car was great except for the small leak from the seal behind the yoke. But they bothsaid that it isn't something to worry about and can be fixed very easily.
So when I got back from my deployment and first drove the car I noticed the whine. It's been there since I drove it and my girlfriend said it was there when she got it.
I keep thinking its something to do with the rearend since that is where it sounds like the whine is coming from. I don't know about gears being aligned and that stuff so I think when I have the shop replace the seal I am going to have them look at the gears.
Is that an indepth process for a shop to check the gears and make sure they are aligned and properly set in there?
oh...and the shifter doesn't vibrate and is smooth to shift and stays smooth while driving. It's a Steeda short shifter in the car.
