anything after 74 is a waste. the 75+ blocks had a thin main web, and inferior metal composition.

you should try to get one thats a bit older... like 69-74

Anything after 74 is not a waste. 71-79 were pretty much the same block, but regardless it is still stronger than a 302. Jasper i have a 78 351 block that was a 2 piece rear main, i say was because i had it machined for a one piece. I am not really sure when they converted to a one piece.

what did it run you to have it machined and what are the benefits of 1 piece rear main seals?

i think they are less prone to leak and are easier to change

The machine work to convert to a one piece cost $125. Yes, they are less prone to leaking and are easier to change. With a one piece you just drop your tranny. With a 2 piece you have either drop your tranny and raise your engine so you can drop oil pan or just unbolt tranny and pull motor.

I just went through a rear main seal dilema with my 84 351W. Go with a 1 piece, or have the block machinened to accept it.
