French Emission Label?

Turbo II -> French Emission Label? (8/12/2007 10:00:29 AM)

Hi everyone, just joined here and I already have a tough question.  I recently received my Marti deluxe report for my 1978 Cobra II and one thing has everyone I know scratching their head.  It lists in the options "French Emission Label".  Now this makes sense as the car was ordered by a dealer in Quebec, Canada however nobody I have contacted has seen or even heard of this.  Was this the emission decal on the valve cover?  Even clubs I have contacted in Quebec have drawn a blank.

I posted here as I believe this could be applicable to more Mustangs than just '74-'78 IIs.

Thanks for any info,

Francis "Turbo II"

surely it just means stickers for emissions were in french rather than english as the vechile was sold in Quebec

That is my thinking.  I would love to reproduce a correct decal for the car but so far all I'm hearing is that they didn't exist.  (This is according to a few mechanics and club members in Quebec..not really a definite answer!).  I have seen bi-lingual emission decals for Canadian cars on '82 and newer mustangs, but never anything earlier or in French only.  In my quest to restore to original, this continues to be a stumbling block.

I have made up "temporary" decal in French for now, but would love to see the real thing IF it exists

Post this on the Mustang II forum, you may have better luck there.

What kind of car is that?  I couldn't tell from the thumbnail....

Seriously though, except for the billboard 'COBRA',  all 180 hairy chested horsepower of it, that is a great looking car.  I always loved the II platform.  Rack & Pinion, V-8, 4 speed option, AC etc.  Nothing wrong with those at all.

Hi Turbo II, I transfer your question to my friend living in Canada. If I get an answer I'll send to you.[;)]

LOL,  actually you overestimated the HP by almost 100![:D]
This particular car is a factory 4 cyl car with a whopping 88hp on tap.  This is the reason I saved it, with only 9005 Cobras made in '78, I suspect less than 10% came without a V8 (or at least the V6).  Probably bought by some Grandma who liked the stripes but didn't want to go fast.   This one's the ultimate in "all show and no go", but with todays gas prices I ain't complaining[sm=smiley36.gif]

I see my post has already been moved?   As I posted previously, I don't think my question is a II specific one (or a Mustang specific one for that matter) I thought it applied to any Fords equipped with emission decals.  Anyway, I thought posting it in the Classic section exposes it to a lot more knowledgeable members.  16,000+ topics vs. 700+ topics tells me I would have had more luck finding answers there....oh well

Welcome to the forums, I dont know about the french sticker thing but that is one clean car you have there. hell, i wasnt even aware they made a cobra delete package - i thought ALL the cobras came with 302's. i have seen mach 1 deletes (my dad has one with a 2.3 in it). also the green striping...... i'll tell you what i would put money on the fact you may have somethinge truely one of a kind in your hands.

*edit* btw, i dont know when canada started its smog crap but in the states it was all happening in the mid 70's, so anything older than a II probably has almost nothing for emmissions stickers on them (logical guess pulled straight from my ass btw)

rouge67:  Tres bien,  Merci de votre aide! (my apologies for my rusty French, has been a long time since I've used it).  That decal is very similar to the '83 one I used as a reference to make up my fake '78 one.  So far know luck in my quest for answers, I'm still waiting for my 999 report from Ford to see what it says.  I still think that the exact wording "French Emission Label" on a car going to Quebec is too much of a coincidence for it to be an error on the Marti report. Besides they have been doing these long enough that I don't think they make many errors.

my77stang: Strange as it sounds, the standard engine for the Cobra IIs was the 2.3 4cyl, it's just that almost no one ordered them that way.  I know of about 1/2 dozen 2.3 Cobras out there, but there are probably not that many left. Most Cobra's are bought by young guys so the first thing they would do is blow up the four and put in a V8... I know I would have when I was younger![:D]

You're right about the emission labelling.  I think the earliest decals I've seen similar to mine are 1973 (although the Paddock's catalog lists them for as early as '68?)  Can't imagine those said much more than "This vehicle has emissions"

LOL!!!!

take into account the green striping which i cant remember if i had ever even seen to be honest, and the french emissions stuff and you really may have a 1 of a kind car. should fetch a pretty penny in years to come when people start actually respecting the II's a little better
