C5 Trans

workinonit -> C5 Trans (8/6/2007 2:15:45 PM)

is anyone running a C5 in there II.? I have a C4 and Im having trans problems. no 3rd gear.....  Im looking at getting it rebuilt but Im not sure if I want to . I've heard that the C5 is much better because of the  lock up converter. other than that its the same trans . does anyone use it? or have one for sale to a fellow stang II driver ? any feedback would be greatly appreciated

Thanks in advance

Without going into all the detail you should know that two components have to work to give you third gear--One is the High and reverse clutch the other the forward clutch--Since you have forward in 1 and 2 the forward clutch is obviously ok---I assume that you have reverse--therefore the high reverse clutch is ok--However there is a tricky situation at work here--From the hydraulic standpoint the same pressure that applies the High/reverse clutch (in forward speeds) is also used to release the 2nd gear band--

If there is a hydraulic leak in that circuit the band will not release and the clutch will not apply.  Therefore the first thing to check is the release side seal on the intermediate (2nd gear) servo which is the one on the front left side of the transmission behind the four bolts-

However be warned it is a tricky operation which may involve dropping the pan before you are done.

when my C4 went to hell, i didnt have any third gear. upon teardown, i found every one of the clutches inside were completely cooked and warped [:D]

C4's are excellent transmissions with minimal effort. Installing a upgraded servo, a shift improver kit, and alto red eagle clutches with kolene steels will make these transmissions hold up to ALOT of abuse for a very long time (these upgrades are actually very cheap, maybe a couple hundred bucks between them all)

thanks for the input. I really didnt want to drop the trans so I droped the pan and went through the valve body. I put in a *trans- go* shift kit.  well I have 3rd back but I need to get it back in the air and tighten the bands.  something I should have done in the first  place .  Im still getting a slight hesitation on the 2-3 shift. I'll keep you posted ..

i believe the upgraded servos help that 2-3 flare, ford used different codes for different vehicles.

the "A" code servos are the worst, the "H" code's are much much better, but aftermarket ones that are better than the "H" are onlly like 100 bucks. there are alco "C" code and "R" code servos, i believe both are better than an "A" code

the c5 is kinda crappy id rebuild your c4 or go for a aod

Colorado_Mustang -> RE: C5 Trans (8/28/2007 9:06:51 PM)

C5 = C4+lockup circuit.  If you have access to a C5, go for it.  But, if you gotta buy a new tranny, I would go with an AOD-E and the controller.  You'll like the electronic programming much more than messing around with the mechanical crap.

[sm=badidea.gif][sm=noooo.gif]  i'm running one in my 67, and it ****ing blows, theres a reason they only made it for like 2 years or something like that......FORD said it sucked that means really dont put it in!

Uhm, the reason they only made the C5 for a couple of years is because with their usual (lack of) wisdom, they replaced it with the A4LD...basically a C3 with a lockup converter AND and overdrive gear, then only installed half of the planetary gears on all but the 4.0 litre models.  Now THAT tranny blows....literally....
