View Full Version : Rebuilding my 07, the saga begins *Updated* 56K Warning
buddydank 08-01-2007, 11:56 AM **I do not recomend trying some of these procedure on your own unless you are experienced and have some righteous tools.(I have neither but my step dad does)**
I recently purchased an 07 Mustang that was a theft recovery. It has some damage to the rear and looks a bit funny due to it's unique paint job but it still has great potential. Last weekend I started rebuilding it and took a number of pictures so I figured I share my experience.
Here's how my baby looked when I first got her last Friday.

Ugly ain't she? Dirty and abused but she only had 1400 miles on her when I got it.
First thing I did of course was to clean out the inside of the car. It was chock full of fun stuff. Here is a short list of some of the goodies I found inside this beast.
1. 14 bullets.(mostly 22's but one was a 9mm)
2. A syringe
3. 8 empty cans of spray paint
4. Various construction items and tools mostly used in roofing
5. Small speaker from a boombox
6. Trash and lots of dust and dirt
There were also a number of things missing from the car. The orginal radio was gone and replaced with a non working one. Rear view mirror broken off, reading lights disconnected and changed to red and blue bulbs, drivers side rail torn off, pony missing from the front grill, and the Mustang trunk lid emblem. Oh and the drivers side seat belt was cut.
As you can see it was painted a lovely black with an off center green stripe. The car was originally Torch Red and has a Charcoal colored interior.
There are no mechanical problems with it that we know of and she drives like a dream.
Saturday I took her out to my step fathers garage to get started.
We began with repairing the damage to the rear right side of the car. We would need to do a pull on the quarter panel first. To start this I parked the car outside between two trees and connect a log chain to the front frame of the car and the other end to a tree.
http://www.buddydank.com/pictures/06.jpg
Then removed the back bumper cover and tail light.
http://www.buddydank.com/pictures/07.jpg
Now we're ready to weld a hook to the back of the quarter panel and attach the winch.
http://www.buddydank.com/pictures/08.jpg
The other end of the winch is attached to another log chain that is around the tree behind the car.
http://www.buddydank.com/pictures/09.jpg
Slowly we start to pull the quarter panel back into shape.
I will continue this post later today.
If you dont mind me asking how much did the stang cost? Its sad to see a torch red stang destroyed:(
banka87 08-01-2007, 12:21 PM That condition makes me want to cry haha
But the bullets are funny.
sw07gt 08-01-2007, 12:24 PM How did it get so dirty with only 1400 miles on it?
redfirevert06 08-01-2007, 12:25 PM I can't believe a car can get that thrashed in less than 1,500 miles!
Good Luck!
Looks like they stole it and then sprayed it black because they were on the lookout "for a red mustang".
NickSezz 08-01-2007, 12:52 PM uhhh wow
marcuskeeler 08-01-2007, 12:58 PM jeezo, That surely is well and truly trashed and Yes, it is amazing that any vehicle that young could look so old. I guess the empty spray cans were Matt Black right? :D
I wonder why the perp's sprayed it like that even, it's like "Look at me, please pull me over Mr Policeman"
Good luck with the build and I'll be watching the thread with interest.
owero01 08-01-2007, 01:43 PM You have a lot of work cut out for you, but I'm sure when you finish it will be fresh. I know a guy who did the same thing to an Accura and when he finished everyone wanted to buy it. Hope you plan on keeping it.
forrestgump 08-01-2007, 02:45 PM Seems like a cool project keep us posted.
Nelsta21 08-01-2007, 02:51 PM Talk about having pride in your work. That is a huge task to take on. Once you are done that thing will be beautiful I am sure. Are you planing on returning it to stock or are you going above and beyond?
PLstang 08-01-2007, 02:59 PM Sounds like a big project but I'll bet you'll have a great appreciation for your stang when your done!
forrestgump 08-01-2007, 03:03 PM If you dont mind me asking how much did the stang cost?
??
Stndbck 08-01-2007, 03:27 PM Really curious how much you paid.....Good luck getting it back in shape.
buddydank 08-01-2007, 03:27 PM Glad to see I've peeked some people's interest.
A little more background on the car to clear a few things up.
I purchased it from someone in Arizona. The vehicle history shows that it sat in a police impound lot for at least 2 month. With the damage to the trunk as it is, the car was not air tight while it sat there. So it seems that during that time it filled up with dirt and dust from all the dust storms they had this spring. And the story told to me was that it was stolen and painted so they could attempt to take it to Mexico. Something about newer cars not being allowed to be moved to Mexico and so they were attempting to make it look older. Oh and I paid about 7k for it and had to have my step father drive it from Arizona to Iowa where he put more miles on the car then it already had altogether.
The best part of it so far is that during his 1500 mile jaunt across the country he averaged 36mpg!! I'm getting around 25 in town. That's way better then I expected.
Ok so back to the project.
Needs more hooks and bolts welded to it to get the job done.
http://www.buddydank.com/pictures/10.jpg
More?
http://www.buddydank.com/pictures/11.jpg
Now we can get the dual winch action going!
http://www.buddydank.com/pictures/12.jpg
Woooohweeeee that's a mess!
http://www.buddydank.com/pictures/13.jpg
And while he's busy doing that, I was experimenting with different ways to possibly remove the spray paint and save the Torch Red.
http://www.buddydank.com/pictures/14.jpg
The section with the paper towel was soaked with acetone and the white gob in the center of the hood is dishwashing soap. The acetone removed the spray paint but that little section took about 2 hours of soaking and resoaking. The dishwashing soap did nothing but previous experience showed us that it would need to be on there for 12+hours to soften up the paint and we only had about 6 hours. More on the paint later.
http://www.buddydank.com/pictures/15.jpg
Sometimes 3 is better then 2. We are somewhat limited in the direction we can pull since we can't easily more the car or the tree. So a good tug and a whip of the log chain will pull out some of the crinkles.
http://www.buddydank.com/pictures/16.jpg
And we finally get to a point where we can start shaping the metal with a hammer.
http://www.buddydank.com/pictures/17.jpg
http://www.buddydank.com/pictures/18.jpg
But don't forget about the grinding! Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
http://www.buddydank.com/pictures/19.jpg
It's looking a little better now. But still a long way to go.
http://www.buddydank.com/pictures/20.jpg
Look for more in a bit.
lldsandsll 08-01-2007, 03:49 PM seems like it would be quicker to buff the surface down with a circular, and then just prime the whole car before having it painted.
SonicBlue05GT 08-01-2007, 04:01 PM that looks like a 40 year old car and it's less than 12 months old[:o]
Revlefty 08-01-2007, 04:03 PM Looks like it'll be a fun project. What are your plans for it? You going to bring it back to stock or go full custom on it.
MELLOWYELLOW06 08-01-2007, 04:06 PM How did you find the car. I would love to take on a project.
Eleanor06 08-01-2007, 04:11 PM Good luck with the project ! Keep us updated.
Ringo01 08-01-2007, 04:18 PM Cool! keep us updated... I hope you fix that stang up and make it new again!
It's sad to see it like that...
ohnoesaz 08-01-2007, 04:37 PM Im stunned at how awesome that rear end came out. It was the one part I cringed about when I started reading.
Oh, that and the green stripe. *wow*. Speechless. honestly if I bought that or if a son or something of mine bought that, I WOULD NOT drive that back for them lol, it would be too embarrassing!
Anyways awesome job so far.
Shard Phoenix 08-01-2007, 04:38 PM I would be really tempted to take some heavy duty polish and a buffer to it and see if you cant just buff the spray paint off, it should work since the krylon crap is just sprayed onto the clear, unless they roughed up the clear first.
Burnsy 08-01-2007, 04:47 PM wow - this is really interesting, I'd love to do this - but thats much easier said than done. It will be fun to follow the progress.
buddydank 08-01-2007, 04:58 PM I guess I forgot to go into what plans I have for this thing.
Both front and back bumper covers have damage to them so I will be replacing them with GT take-offs. The spoiler of course will need to be added with the side rails to match the kit.
After more tests on removing the paint we've come to the decision to strip the whole thing and repaint. That's what I wanted from the begining but my step father wanted to at least give it a shot. I'm thinking of painting it Grabber Orange with either White or Silver stripes. We have the knowhow and the equipment to paint it ourselves so I'll be able to do some customizing to the paint. Also I'll be using a chemical paint strippper gel to take everything down to the metal.
And for those interested I found it on Yahoo Auto's which I think just pimps for AutoTrader. I'd been watching eBay for months trying to find one to fix up but they always go for way too much. I just got lucky and found a guy who had purchased it at a police auction and then decided he didn't have time to fix it up so he just wanted his money back.
Hehe and you should see the looks I get from people when I drive it in town. :)
So after a few more tugs we're ready to move it into the garage.
http://www.buddydank.com/pictures/21.jpg
Another quick look at what we've done so far.
http://www.buddydank.com/pictures/22.jpg
http://www.buddydank.com/pictures/23.jpg
And just like it's Monday we get back to the grind!
http://www.buddydank.com/pictures/24.jpg
Must remove as much paint as possible while cleaning up the metal.
http://www.buddydank.com/pictures/25.jpg
Need to get all the spots that have divits and warps. Do you know what time it is??
http://www.buddydank.com/pictures/26.jpg
It's BONDO TIME!!!!
http://www.buddydank.com/pictures/27.jpg
This is just the first layer of Bondo. There will be many more as we will need to shape it to match.
http://www.buddydank.com/pictures/28.jpg
After sanding it down a bit we need to make sure the tail light will fit properly.
http://www.buddydank.com/pictures/29.jpg
Not too bad for one days work!
http://www.buddydank.com/pictures/30.jpg
This weekend we will start stripping all the paint and continue to get the rear in shape.
Stay tuned for more next week.
Shard Phoenix 08-01-2007, 05:08 PM Already looks quite a lot better! Its good you decided to strip it, the custom paint should yield very nice results! It looks like your "contact" Has a pretty good idea of what he is doing!
Burnsy 08-01-2007, 05:18 PM haha, wow that was all in one day? Great job! keep us posted
lldsandsll 08-01-2007, 05:26 PM this is really cool! the best thing about having picked up a V6 is that you don't have to feel guilty if you decide to tear the engine out and put a monster in it!
dmhines 08-01-2007, 05:34 PM Cool ... this should be a great thread ..... :D
tedBalog 08-01-2007, 05:40 PM Your step-dad is probably like "Why the hell are you taking pictures?! Give me a hand!"
Looks like you're progressing nicely.
TPony 08-01-2007, 05:46 PM This will be an great project to keep track off...can't wait to see the final results.
MIKE562 08-01-2007, 07:05 PM Seems like a really fun project! Im anxious to see more pictures!!! Great job keep up the good work [sm=smiley20.gif]

MantaDreams 08-01-2007, 07:37 PM hat's off to you and your step dad. many would have made this a parts car (but at $7k? maybe not.)
pay attention to the master, you're gonna learn a lot.
oh man i cant wait until the next update. I live in texas and i have never heard of such a rule to not let new cars past the border? can any one explain this one?

Im guessing he means more like for cars being towed or hauled across. They may want to see papers for newer cars. Hell I dont know im completely guessing.
Anyways, funny comment above about the stepdad is probably saying "quit taking pictures come gimme a hand!" lol
So yeah, awesome job, its gonna be killer. Can you imagine 2 months from now? We're going to look back on this thread and be stunned how awesome it turned out.
sw07gt 08-02-2007, 12:26 AM Already making pretty good progress. Keep us updated.
Stang_Heritage07 08-02-2007, 12:52 AM wow! all in one day of work
this might not take as long as I thought!
I think this car might have to be Mustang of the Month around here once it gets done just because it will be remarkable to see its progress!
nineinchnail1024 08-02-2007, 01:02 AM Just subscribed to this thread. How could I not!
KTownGT 08-02-2007, 02:52 AM Scribed!
Looks like it is coming along great!
8178A 08-02-2007, 06:30 AM Can’t tell from the pictures but did he weld up the holes created to pull the fender out before putting the filler on?
buddydank 08-02-2007, 09:25 AM No repairing the holes wasn't needed. The base coat of bondo is much thicker and stronger and can just be used to fill the small holes.
I'm working on getting all the photos I took up in one place by the end of today.
And about taking the car to Mexico. There are many strange laws about importing cars into Mexico. I haven't looked too much into it but I found a thread or 2 from other forums going into it. There are restrictions based on what year the car is, how many you can import, ect..... It's confusing but really I believe the person who told me they were trying to get my car into Mexico was guessing. There is no real way to tell what my car went through in it's short time here on earth. And I'm not really sure I want to know.
Thanks for all the nice comments.
Quck question- I'll be taking more pictures this weekend when we continue working on it. Should I start a new thread for the new ones or continue here?
unsocbl 08-02-2007, 09:30 AM My .02, keep posting here. I have this link saved :)
lldsandsll 08-02-2007, 09:43 AM so are u gonna put a new motor in it?
Tubra 08-02-2007, 10:02 AM This is awesome, now we know what it'll look like in 40 years when these things are actually being restored.
cam2904 08-02-2007, 10:16 AM Keep up the work and I will definitly be referring back to this thread.
forrestgump 08-02-2007, 10:18 AM wow this thread is really cool, like the person who said they feel like they are watching a cartoon i feel the same way i feel like its a tv show that keeps on saying to be continued so im gonna use my dvr and hit record..lol
MELLOWYELLOW06 08-02-2007, 10:32 AM I have some parts for the car if you need. Front bumper GT, GT grill upper and lower, bumper foam isolator, Headlights, Foglights, GT rear wing, GT mufflers. Keep up the post and lets see more pix. Its like an episode of Overhaulin. BTW, whatever happened to that show?
forrestgump 08-02-2007, 10:39 AM I have overhauling on series record at the house it records every once and while...not sure on the times but it records while im at work, my main channel would be 67(speed channel)

rygenstormlocke 08-02-2007, 02:01 PM Very impressive project, and you made quick work of that car! I can't wait to see what else you have planned. Once the body and interior are restored, what do you have planned performance wise? Swap in a 4.6, 5.4 or other type V8, or soup up the 6 in it. It oviously runs well if you get 25mph around town and over 30 highway. Grabber orange is a sweet color for these S197's. Again, great work.
Cheers.

Looks like they stole it and then sprayed it black because they were on the lookout "for a red mustang".
you are probably right. that is a pretty common thing to do.
once the car is stolen it is usually spray painted to look like something different.
buddydank 08-02-2007, 04:33 PM I uploaded all the photos I took that day to my website. You can view them at the following address.
http://www.buddydank.com/plogger
*Careful! These are the full size pictures so they might be tough to load on a slower connection.
**EDIT - The picture are not in the order I had intended. I will try to fix that later.
A number of people have been asking what my plans are for the Stang besides the general fixing up the exterior project. Quite honestly I'm extremely happy with the engine the way it is. I get great gas milage and I'm now old enough that I don't need to be tearing it up around town. It's plenty fast as it is.
The main issue is money. I couldn't afford a new Mustang so I got a broken new one. The truth is that I can't even afford the bumper covers I want to replace or the paint right now. Once I get the exterior fixed, it may be awhile before I paint the car and put on the new bumpers. That is unless I can convince the family to help me out. We'll see. She might be primer grey until next spring.
But down the road when I have money to burn, I can see myself doing some modding. Maybe just a CAI and a tune but who knows.
Enjoy the pictures and I'll be back with more once we get back to work on it this weekend.
Oh and I have no idea what that tractor thingy in the background is. I didn't even know it was a Bolens until someone asked and I had to go thru the pictures to figure out what they were talking about.
SeanoStang 08-02-2007, 05:46 PM i think you should go with one of these colors
http://1000www.autoblog.com/2007/03/16/new-colors-for-mustang/
grabber blue or amber gold.......both look killer

buddydank 08-03-2007, 09:34 AM Did a little more work on the car. I did some testing with the paint remover. Covered the trunk lid with the gel and wow does this stuff work quick. In just 10 minutes the top of the trunk was paint free. Very strong stuff!
After that we did a little more work on the trunk lid itself. Applied some more bondo and the shaping is coming along nicely. You can also see in the pictures that we just did a quck primer job on it.

Tomorrow is the big day! I'm stripping the whole thing down to the metal and we should hopefully have the rear end completely finished.
I'll try to get updates here tomorrow but it might be Sunday.(they only have dialup)
forrestgump 08-03-2007, 09:54 AM ^^^what is that a commercial or something? lol Im ready for this weekends episode.

PLstang 08-03-2007, 09:56 AM Hurry up and get back to work on that car, I need another fix!

07BLACKGT 08-03-2007, 10:12 AM Me too! I'mREALLY looking foward to the weekend! haha
This is an awesome thread. :D
nineinchnail1024 08-03-2007, 11:41 AM This really is by far the most interesting thread I've come across on mustang forums. There needs to be a new section for restorations, and this needs to be the first sticky in that section. (Lol. A 2007 as the first sticky in a restoration forum.) Keep up the good work!
SaddleUp 08-03-2007, 04:19 PM Dude,
First of all let me say this: my hat is off to you. I think you are so very lucky to have your step-dad as such an excellent resource person and such an excellent worker!!!!
Second: I think you are a wonderful example of how lack of resource (for example, money) did not slow you down. Your perserverance will pay off. I admire that you are willing to put your heart and soul into restoring the car. Not to mention a BUNCH of hard work!
Third: might I make a suggestion to the paint job on the car when you are done? I know you might think this is weird, but given the history of the car and all that it has been through, I had an idea. I know you think the car looks kinda rugged right now, and let's face it. It has travelled a VERY ROUGH road it's first year of life. However, with that being said, I am a firm believer in never forgetting where you come from no matter how prosperous and successful we become. So, I vote for painting the car black and putting the green stripe back on it, off center just like it was. Only this time around she will be standing tall and shining like new money. She will turn heads this time for being all blinged out and looking awesome!!!!!
Just for a moment picture it in your head..............what a story your beautiful car will hold for you to share with others! Best of luck to you and I hope everyone here will rally behind you and your beloved step-dad as you bring her back, front and center, to the top!
Shella ~ :)
Shard Phoenix 08-03-2007, 04:21 PM Yeah, to bad thats the worlds ugliest green :P

NickSezz 08-04-2007, 09:40 AM This reminds me of the end of the movie Gone in 60 Seconds. Where they have the beat up GT500and they are going to resore it.
lldsandsll 08-04-2007, 10:04 AM hopefully i don't get flamed for this, but i kinda like the idea of an off center stripe. also, the pony emblem to match the stripe, make sure to keep that! it will be very original, and it will look hot in the black grill.
NickSezz 08-04-2007, 10:18 AM Gloss black with a double, darker green stripe down the middle...I hate off centered stripes...Then add some 18 inch black buillit wheels with a chrome lip. Louvers would be cool too with the rear window one to go with it...oh and 20% tints... That car would scream "IM BADDASS"
lldsandsll 08-04-2007, 10:19 AM cant remember where, but you can pick up a nice pair of unpainted louvers for 60 bucks. cant beat that.
buddydank 08-04-2007, 10:41 PM Didn't get a ton done today as I was working by myself. I started chemically stripping the paint and got about 75% done.
Here's some pictures of before, during and after.
I applied the paint stipper gel with a paint brush. Starting with the roof and hood.

And I ran out of paint stripper. It was too late to go get some more so I will finish it up tomorrow or Tuesday.

Not nearly as exciting as the first phase but I feel i got a lot done today.
Stay tuned for future episodes!

MELLOWYELLOW06 08-04-2007, 10:49 PM This is fun:)
In the 4.0 section steve is selling his 4.6 engine with a procharger and stock rear end for about 6 grand. Maybe you can dump that into this and create a beast!
Fizzie06 08-05-2007, 12:15 AM I am in to help w/the donation to you just tell me how
HDmstng 08-05-2007, 12:37 AM Wow! Subscribed.
I liked the idea of repainting black with the off center green stripe too.
lrgnation 08-05-2007, 01:02 AM Off centered stripe is kinda lame IMHO... But I vote for a new front and rear bumper, silverhorse racing window louvers, I say pull the motor and paint the car right. Go black i think...
2.5% Tint... Last thing

Jackies Stang 08-05-2007, 07:24 AM SOMEBODY GET THIS MAN SOME DAM PAINT REMOVER GEL! Asi was reading i felt myself getting closer and closer the the comp monitor as if the closer i got the more intense the story would get! Keep up the great work!
Jackies Stang 08-05-2007, 07:28 AM I know you said you are gonna experiment with paint colors but looking at the last few pictures i got the feeling like a tuxedo two tone would look great or a silver to black fade from front to back! That purpleish pink color kinda caught my eye too! You got me thinking now!
foghorn2 08-05-2007, 07:59 AM I like the idea of setting up a donation for him. Or we can ship him extra parts he may need that we have left over from our modds.
I like the grabber blue idea too.

I don't know what you will be looking for, but I have the original Skipper 500, and will have full GT cat backs next weekend. Within the next month I will be pulling the stock intake as well. You are welcome to them if you like.

If you take car of your Mustang, it won't have to be restored. Look at my '82 GT that I sold 4 years ago.....let's just say the buyer dropped his jaw.

MantaDreams 08-05-2007, 11:00 AM this is a great story. Oh, and I didn't lose sight of the vehicle he has next to his project in that garage. I wonder if that was a resto-mod?
Burnsy 08-05-2007, 11:27 AM best thread ever
buddydank 08-05-2007, 11:35 AM The other car in the garage is a kit car, it is not an actual Austin Healy. My step father took a new 4 banger like the ones in Ford Ranger and is retrofitting it to the car. The tough part was getting the engine's computer to work due to the safe gaurds put in place in the original Ranger. But he found someone online that could hack the computer so he sent it out and just get the comptuer back last week and now it starts up and is almost ready to go. The car is so light that even though it's a small engine, it should really fly with that under the hood.
I'm just now catching up on everyone's comments. Wow. It really has inspired me to work my butt off to get this thing moving along.
I'm not sure how I feel about the donations. I wouldn't turn down parts donations if you have extra but I don't want to look like a begger so I'll think about the money through paypal thing. Maybe I can work out some kind of deal where I put your name on the car or something. I don't know. Anyone interested in donating there extra parts can contact me through email at buddy@buddydank.com.
The parts I need are front and rear bumper covers mainly but I'll put anything on this thing that you got.
Quite a few people think I should throw in a V8 but that's not going to happen right now. I'm already taking up a ton of my step fathers time and I don't need to commit him to more at the moment. Maybe after I've got it looking good I can think about it.

I have a stock V6 front bumper off of an '05. I did the GT swap on the front of my friend's V6 and he let me keep the bumper. If you want it, it's yours for the cost of shipping. Grill included. It's even the same shade of red that your car *used* to be. Lol. PM me if you're interested.

You people are awesome!! It seems we appreciate when someone is willing to put hard work into getting something done. Not only is this person paying for the car himself, he also is working his tail-end off to get a good-looking ride. I just wanted to say I am truly impressed with everyone's encouragement and sense of generosity they are willing to offer. Good job people!

BigDave 08-06-2007, 02:30 PM Help me here. Whatare the differences between the GT front bumper/fascia and the V6? Can the GT bumper mount up to the V6?
Also, if I ship my bumper, what's the best way to get it packaged and does UPS have a size limitation for shipping?
Thanks,

www.newtakeoff.com (http://www.newtakeoff.com) or their number is 1-888-240-0025 they have all sorts of OEM take off parts and the prices seem pretty decent.
good luck on the build, I'll be following it

reburn 08-06-2007, 06:12 PM I vote black with off center green stripe like above. Only leave the pony chrome. I have an idea for those who want to contribute. why dont you pick your 3 favorite color schemes or paint colors and run a poll by email and paint the car that color. You can pull the emails from the paypal accounts.

Looking good so far. Thank you all so much for your help and kindness. A lot of amazingly generous people on here.
Not sure how I feel about the black w/ green. I'm not going to shoot it down completely but I'm still leaning toward Grabber Orange. As we get further along and closer to painting the car I'm going to setup a poll. I won't necessarily choose which ever one gets the most votes but I'm interested to see what the ********** thinks.
I'm still working with a couple individuals on getting some parts shipped to me. As soon as I know exactly what I need, I'll put the word out.
Tonight I'll be finishing off the paint stippping. The car is still at my step fathers, so I'm sure he'll have more work done on the rear end by the time I get there tonight. I'll post the pictures afterwards and maybe a video. I really wish I'd thought of the video thing during the winch pulling stage.
offrdmania 08-07-2007, 09:51 AM This thread is going to end up next to Tacobills. Hope he doesnt get jelous that he isnt on top anymore...
Alloyed 08-07-2007, 09:55 AM Great to see this restoration! I can't wait to see the results! The black with green looks sick, though.
IMO, i think it would be very hard to get that quasi-translucent green stripe. also, even with keeping the history in mind and for greater value of the car, it would be good to see a normal paint job. not everyone in his town/city or where ever he drives is going to know the story behind this car. If i saw a black and green mustang randomly driving around, i would curse it and say its horrible
MexGT 08-07-2007, 10:43 AM wow took some time to read the 8 pages but its an interesting thread !
forrestgump 08-07-2007, 10:45 AM ^^^I will agree with bmk, but on the contrary I dont think the paint should be something that alot of people aready have, here you have the oppurtunity to paint your car an insaine color, why go with the standard grabber orange?
buddydank 08-07-2007, 11:01 AM I agree that I should take this opportunity to paint my car a unique color. But Grabber Orange is not a standard to me. Heck I've never seen one in person. But the color thing is still open for debate. I'd really like to do something different besides the color. Maybe a unique set of stripes or something different then stripes. I really wish I could airbrush.
pnandy 08-07-2007, 11:29 AM with all the extra parts you'll have left over you could practice on those first
ohnoesaz 08-07-2007, 11:49 AM Ok ok, I hate to be the one who has to ruin everything....
But that black with green stripe is horrible in the real world. I know here on the site this car is becoming a loved 'in-house' car that everyone wants to be a part of, but in the real world when this guy is driving to work or a job interview or just being seen on the street, he does not want an ugly green stripe ruining what could be a very nice car.
Believe me, when I see body kits and stripes and rims on this site I start drooling and love some of extreme things I see. But in the real world it just doesn't work out as well, nor do others view it in the same way we do.
Anyways, thats just my opinion. I say pick one nice color and go with it, or pick a nice color and stripe combo (not a green off center stripe). Personally I think a nice combo that gives a fancy/sophisticated look with the combination of powerful muscle car is a white car with a thick blue stripe.
But if you want for any strange reason a GT front and/or sway bar, LCAs, panhard bar/bracethen I have it. Just in case these were damaged in that car's journey. Thats all I have.
forrestgump 08-07-2007, 11:53 AM Ok I dont know if this is grabber orange, please disregard what i said in the previous post because this color is sick.
just go here apparntly i cant attach!

Sorry for the caps but I'm just so happy and excited and stuff.
Ok so I now know what I'm getting from BigDave. I still need a couple things and I think people have already posted some of them. I still need a rear bumper cover and rocker panels. I'd like the GT ones so they go better with the GT front end but I can't be too picky can I. Also I think BigDave said his grill doesn't have the fog lights in it. Someone mentioned the bezels? Is that different than the actual lights? Regardless I guess I'll need those too.
I'll go through the post and check on who offered what so I can email them but if you have these and are offering them up, let me know.
BTW - Donations are up over $110!!!
I'm faily certain that I could not be happier then I am right now.

blaven 08-07-2007, 02:54 PM If you do go with the orange color scheme i would like to see something a bit more darker than the grabber orange thats on the 07's. I like the color but in certain light it looks like its yellow. But thats just me, keep up the good work!
pegasusphototx 08-07-2007, 02:54 PM Bezel is just the metal trim on the outside of the foglights, they are not the lights themselves. Sorry.
Let me know if you want them, and where I should ship them.

buddydank 08-07-2007, 03:01 PM MyMaria(Dave),
Yes I'm in Des Moines. But we are working on the car in Perry. No extra hands needed quite yet but I'll keep you in mind.
I've seen different old school car club gatherings in Des Moines like at Porkys but are there any Mustang Clubs around here that you know of. I'm just curious.
pegasussphototx(Danny)
Thanks for clearing that up for me. Not sure I'll need them but if I do I'll jet you an email.
Thanks everyone!

Man your pretty good with PS. If you dont mind, how long does it take to change the color and put stripes on it and what function of PS did you use to make it happen. I know the basics but im no where near being able to do that.
TxLonghorn 08-07-2007, 09:06 PM Actually, I consider myself a bit of a photoshop newb- I don't know what half the tools do. I've just got a good eye for what things should look like. To do all 3 of those took me about an hour, but the first one was just changing the stripes from black to white. To put on the stipes, I used the polygonal lasso to mark out the area where the stripes should be approximately, then copy paste into a new layer. Then, in the menu, Image>Adjustments>Hue/Saturation to change them to the desired color. Then just use the eraser to clean up the stripes.
Jackies Stang 08-07-2007, 09:10 PM I am really diggin the green black fade!
stangdude81 08-07-2007, 09:34 PM The tie died photoshop made the voice of Tommy Chong come to mind. "Dave's not here man" anyway, what do you think of black with a green pearl stripe? Not readily apparent, but will stand out in the right light?
lldsandsll 08-07-2007, 09:47 PM white stripes look nice, so does black fade.

SaddleUp 08-07-2007, 11:57 PM Do what you think is best with your car.....I personally love the idea of the black with the off-center green stripe......and I don't think there is anything *gross* or *stupid* about it. I think it is strikingly bold and unique, aggressive-looking. However, it is YOUR car. I think any color combo you choose people here will be supportive as you have been generous enough to share your experience with us. Best of luck dude!

aschultz91 08-08-2007, 12:08 AM ok man well you asked for a pink/ blue striped one lol. You may want to question your sexual orientation after seing this one j/k j/k This is my first time doing something like this so cut me a little slack. The car was originally white if anybody cared to know.

bomb79 08-08-2007, 05:19 AM buddy get all GT parts so it can look like a GT theres a lot of people offering parts so take the ones you want and need to complete the look your going for you can politely decline things you dont want/need alot of guys are just putting things out there to be generous and nice.GT side skirts and Gt rear bumper. then youll need a GT grill with the foglamps opening. itll be a little harder to find and get the GT foglamps and wiring .see what they have on newtakeoff.com, and with the paint go with something simple yet bold ilike grabber orang and 12" white stripes myself.
buddydank 08-08-2007, 09:38 AM OK my mind is made up. Pink and blue it is!!! How gross is that? Wow. Now if I could only figure out how to tie dye a car I'd be set.
I headed down to work on the car last night after picking up more paint remover, just in time for a home cooked meal. Thanks mom!
One problem, I forgot my camera?!!! Oh well, I borrowed theirs. The pictures are a bit off since I didn't have the flash on for the first few so please forgive me.
I got started removing the remaining paint.
http://www.buddydank.com/pictures/50.jpg
And Wes continued to shape the rear end.
http://www.buddydank.com/pictures/51.jpg
Some of the paint was proving to be a pain in the butt to remove.
http://www.buddydank.com/pictures/52.jpg
And we needed to remove the trunk lid to fix a bump in it. Wes pounded on it with a big hammer but I have no pics of that because I was holding it at the time, sorry.
http://www.buddydank.com/pictures/53.jpg
It's starting to come off, slowly but surely.

http://www.buddydank.com/pictures/57.jpg
Removed the hood and fenders to get the last of the paint out of the nooks and crannies. This side is almost done!
http://www.buddydank.com/pictures/58.jpg
I hope to have these prepped and ready to paint with primer by Saturday.
http://www.buddydank.com/pictures/59.jpg
It was getting late so I didn't get this side all finished quite yet.
http://www.buddydank.com/pictures/60.jpg
So that's all we got done last night.
I'm heading down to work on it again on Thursday and will hopefully have all the external paint removed. I'll still need to do the door wells and some other prep work but if things go well we'll be putting on the primer this weekend!!
I decided when we removed the hood and fenders that I'm going to get rid of the antenna and cover up the hole while I have the chance. I'll just find one of the windshield ones out there.
Thanks again for all the support. The donations are up to $120!!! I am still looking for a GT rear bumper cover and rails if anyone has them.

KEELENTIME 08-08-2007, 10:41 AM TxLonghorn,
The black with green stripes is hot as hell. I think if I ever have to redo it, that will be the color choice I go with.
ohnoesaz 08-08-2007, 11:07 AM Again, I think green stripes is going way too far for a daily driver. I do think the two stripes was much more acceptable than 1 offset stripe, but still green is just going to far.
Green with black stripes was better, but... You better be a Spartans fan with that.
Some nice blue with white stripes or reverse would be nice. Or keep it clean and just one color.

So I have a question for anyone out there. Has anyone shipped anything that size personally? Who did you ship it through?
Let me check into some things and get back to you BigDave. I owe you big time!
Eleanor06 - Great! But let me figure out this shipping problem and I'll get back to you too.
I'm going to be working on the car again tonight. I'm still hoping to be ready to paint the primer this weekend.
Mountain Mustang 08-09-2007, 09:11 AM Check with Greyhound (yes, the bus line [8D])on shipping the bumper. They will usuallyship larger items at a reasonable cost.

White05GT 08-09-2007, 09:50 AM Thats a sweet Austin Healy in the background. Have you decided on a color yet? That Dark Highland Green would be my choice or the Nightmist Blue from 66. Not current colors but still Mustang colors. Something to be said for keeping it the original color too, in case you want to sell it later. Looks like you guys are doing a great job, I know what it's like stripping a car to bare metal using paint stripper, done it twice myself. Really looking forward to your progress and good luck with your project.
Puckhog407 08-09-2007, 10:44 AM Wow ... terrific thread, and let me say this first: Everyone who has read this thread and contributed anything from a part, to money, to kind words has really been an inspiration. Really ... in today's world, we hear so much about the terrible side of people that we can forget how giving and kind people can be.
I wish I had some parts to send you Buddy, but unfortunately, all I have are a couple of V6 grilles (which you're welcome to if you should need them).
I also wondered while I read this if one of us shouldn't send this whole thread to someplace in Buddy's home state (Iowa?) that could really make a major impact on this project. A local TV station or high end body shop would probably love to make some type of difference in this whole thing. Anyway, it's been fun following this thread ... I'm looking forward to seeing the progression.
BigDave 08-09-2007, 10:52 AM I think it would hurt his step-father's feeling to farm out bodywork, and it looks as though he has matters well in hand.
Buddy, I do think with the amount of "community" involvement here and the photo diary, plus the whole story overall, you have a good chance to get this project covered in a magazine somewhere. This has all the makings of a feel-good sort of "pheonix project." The amount of support on this forum attests to that...
Puckhog407 08-09-2007, 10:57 AM That's true Dave, you're right... I wasn't trying to undercut what his stepdad has done though. In fact, I think a shop actually doing the work would take away from this whole project. I meant that maybe some high end place might donate parts or something ... something just to help out.
Railrider 08-09-2007, 11:10 AM How about forwarding the whole thread to Boyd Coddington or Chip Foose? I think Boyd would take great
interest in it. Anyone have a connection/friend of a friend who knows Boyd or any of his guys, Just as long as
D-wayne the king of all A$$H0LES does'nt get wind of it we might have a chance at getting Buddy some
help with parts.

I've also removed most of the parts I can and am finishing the prep on them to begin painting.

So we're moving right along and plan on starting the paint this weekend, sanding and finishing throughout the weekend, and have hopes of laying down the base coat next weekend. Then we just have the clear coat it and finish her off!!! I'm so excited!
I need to contact a number of people who have offered parts because I think I've figured out an easier way to ship things freight.
And I'd also like to take a moment to thank everyone who has donated to the cause. I'll be thanking everyone individually when I have more time but for now, THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!!!!!
ps....you should see what my step father has come up with to minimize the humidity problems when painting a car yourself.

I found this thread today, this project and the participationis truly amazing. I will definitely be watching it.
Originally it was a single stripe lined up on the driver so that he could tell if the suspension was oversteering or understeering, suspensions were a little less sophisticated in those days. I remember reading years ago that the racing stripe originated at Le Mans - I think in the earlypost WWII years, possibly on the MG's or Jag's. So the single stripe on the left side has historical precedence.

I decided I didn't want the antenna so we welded a patch over the original hole and grinded it down smooth.

I started removing the doors which means disassembling them almost completely.

Now I had all the doors off and the trunk lid off and am getting them prepped for paint.

But I also had some other paint to remove around the doors once I got them off.

Bondo to the rescue!

And this is the last layer of bondo on rear end.

Today's plans include prepping and painting. I went out and bought some expensive primer that is to be used on bare metal. Now I just need to do a ton of masking so we can get moving along. I still have high hopes of finishing by next weekend. Even if I don't have the bumpers, I can always do those later.
I'll try to get a post up tonight with all of our work so far. I'm really excited to see it all one color even if it is just primer grey.
buddydank 08-12-2007, 08:43 AM Oh and one other thing! Is Amber Gold really an 08 color? If so does anyone know the color code?
I'm seriously considering painting it that color with no stripes.
And yes I do have a job but my step father is the real driving force of the project. He probably could have finished it by himself in a week.
Alloyed 08-12-2007, 08:44 AM Movin' right along, can't wait to see more progress! Keep it up.
