Well, here's the scenario... I've recently purchased my dream car, which is a 2000 Saleen Mustang S/C with relatively light mods. It's been kept in very good condition, and it only has about 26,500 miles on the odometer. The car required some minor repairs, including a new battery, sealing and exhaust leak, new header gaskets, and cats (because I needed to pass emissions). As far as mods go, the only ones I'm pretty certain of include BBK long tube headers, BBK off-road x-pipes, and a tremic transmission. I love the way she sounds, and so far I've only done light street/highway driving. I've got her checked out at my local shop, and everything seems to be running great (after spending a couple hundred bucks).
So now I've decided to added a little power and torque to my beauty. I've been reading the posts here for some time now, and I must say this is by far the best place to get technical help for all things Saleen. I'm not the ultimate guru as far as Saleens go, so that's why I'm asking for expert advice on this post. My ultimate goal is to one day reach at least 500HP and 500 torque, and I don't plan on racing my Saleen that much. I haven't gotten a dyno test yet, but the previous owner stated that it was pushing about 375HP. Ideally, I want to add a couple bolt-on mods now and engine replacement parts in the distant future. I know there are numerous mods and upgrades out there that can be done on Saleens, and I want to find the right combination for my ride. I want to make a well-informed decision as to which general direction I should go so I don't end up wasting my hard-earned money on useless mods and upgrades.
Sorry if I'm just completely boring some of you guys out there; I know you've heard these kinds of posts before. But I really worked hard for my Saleen. In fact, I've been saving up for three long years just to purchase her. Ever since I could remember, owning a Saleen was one of my life goals. Now that I've finally earned her, I'd like to keep her in top condition. I'd really appreciate any expert advice from anyone that knows a little about Saleen mods and upgrades. Here's a general idea of what I have in mind for my Saleen (in no particular order):
1) 3.73 or 4.10 gears (Which one and what brand would be best for a Saleen?) 2) Accufab 75mm Throttle Body (Wondering if a throttle body spacer would also help?) 3) CAI Kit (Should I go with C&L, JLT, or some other brand?) 4) Chicane 66mm S/C Pulley (Are fuel pumps also necessary with the pulley?) 5) Lightning 90mm MAF (What do these really do?) 6) SCT Tune (Better than Diablo? Custom or present tunes?) 7) 475HP Supercharger Upgrade Kit (Which series is needed for my Saleen: 1, 2, 4?)
Well, that's a list of some of the upgrades I plan to do in the not too distant future. Again, I would really appreciate any expert advice in this matter. Thanks again for taking the time to help out a fellow Saleen owner. The way I see it, you should treat your car the way you would treat your child--with love and respect. Take care of it, and it'll take care of you. Peace out!
1. the 375hp that the person quoted you is at the crank, not at the wheel. So if you're shooting for 500hp, that's roughly 410hp at the wheel because of drivetrain loss.
2. If the main goal is to get to 500hp, then I'd go with the 66mm pulley, SVT focus fuel pump (necessary to feed more fuel to the engine for the smaller pulley), chicane intercooler, 90mm MAF, CAI, and an SCT tune. If you want to get that high for horsepower, then you'll probably have to replace the injectors. I still don't think that all of those mods would get you as high as you want to be....but my guess would be around 375 rear wheel HP after those.
I don't know of too many owners here running that much horsepower off of a Saleen Series 1 or 2 blower....but maybe they'll come out of the woodwork and help me out here.
Feel free to chime in and correct anything I've posted if I missed anything.
Thanks for those pointers eviligloo. I'll keep them in mind.
Well, I've added a few pictures here to show everything what's hiding under my hood.

What do you guys think? I value everyone's input, so don't be shy! Thanks again!
ok here you go i just had some stuff done to give u a idea..mrt hpipe...66mm pully..fuel pump...42lb injectors..90mm mass air..cold air intake..373 gears i may be missing little stuff here but all that gave me about 345 and 370trq sooo your asking for alot.....
so in my opinion heres what you need if u want 500 hp 1 go to haney motorsports and order a forged bottom end and have that installed 2 sell your saleen blower and buy a kenne bell 2.1 or 2.6 blower 3grab some long tubes and fuel pump and mass air and you can prob be close to saying hello to atleast 450hp or 500!!! THis is my plans anywhay so good luck
That's an awesome looking car.....nice work on the purchase! Sounds like you'll really appreciate being a Saleen owner!
1) This is a great mod and mostly an opinion as to which ratio is best; both seem great.....I went 3.73's because they seemed like the best trade-off (great acceleration, coupled with reasonable top gear, highway speed RPMs). Most folks recommend Ford Racing gears over Motive 2) Accufab....probably the best throttle body out there for your application......spacer.....I don't think so (but, I'm not as familar with the Series II superchargers) 3) CAI......great addition.....I'm clueless as to what advantages one brand offers over the other 4) Supercharger pulley.......best bang-for-your buck, but talk to Joe at Chicane (310-782-0063); you may be limited as to how fast that Series II will spin without running into trouble 5) 90 mm MAF......again, great mod; the bore itself allows more air into the intake, which comes in handy when you have a supercharger sucking it in, and the electronic component tells the rest of the car (e.g. injectors, etc...) what to do as a result of seeing that higher airflow. Lightning 90mm = effective up to around 500 hp/ SCT 90mm effective up to around 600 hp (price difference between the two is great enough that if you don't need a > 500 hp application....don't buy it). 6) SCT + Saleen = ; Diablo + Saleen = .......just from what I've heard, not science....use whatever your tuner uses so long as you trust them (which, I hope you do at this point) 7) 475 Upgrade kit.....forget about this one.....it's designed for Series VI superchargers
It will take some work to get to 500 crank hp....to get to that number at the rear wheels, you'll basically need a complete overhaul (forged internals, big dog injectors [no, that's not a brand], better flowing supercharger, etc...). However, if you add even just 75 hp to what you have (which is solid to begin with, by the way).....you will have quite the machine.
Igloo mentioned the Chicane Intercooler as well. Bounce that off Joe....see what kind of hp gains you'll get from your Series II and decide if it's worth it.
Please don't take my advice as gospel.....there are a lot of folks/resources out there that have experience with these and other mods. It's always good to see what you're comfortable with yourself.

Yep - as mills said the 475 HP Upgrade is for the Series VI SC that was used on the new S197 cars. There is a reason Saleen forged the bottom end of the motor when they started building the E cars in 2002 - its needed I don't know a whole lot about the 2V motor and SC's, but I haven't heard of anybody getting near 500hp with that motor without rebuilding the bottom end first.
And just out of curiousity - why try to get that insane amount of hp out of a motor that wasn't built for it when as you say...."I don't plan on racing my Saleen that much"
Glad to have you on board - congrats on the purchase Enjoy the car and enjoy all the friendly folks in here!
So let me ask a stupid question, The supercharger in Pantsit car now is a Saleen SC, correct. The one I see for sale that work on a 2000 is made by Saleen. Its a Saleen IV SC, Whats the Diff. Cost of a Saleen IV is about $5000.
If you want to upgrade your SC Ill be gladd to work a deal for the one you in there now since my 2000 doesnt have a Supercharger.

my reccomendation (as always), call JDM, ditch your blower. screw kenny bell, Series 5 is comming back. 2.6 liter twin screw, twin-cooled supercharger. Way more efficient than the KB. Jr has a couple of ideas for the 99-04 cars (I discuss them at length with him for my car). 500hp will be no problem very soon.

Props to Mills as he as well as others have always been straight shooters here. I am in the process of the same/ similar mods to my 04SC Saleen. I just got the JLT CAI last night delivered, I am still waiting on the Fuel Pump that I ordered from Haney last week that should be here this week. I ordered the 66 mm pulley from Chicane and the Accufab 75 MM TB from Accufab directly last week. The guy doing my install of parts will put in the 3:73's and I also have the MGW shifter to put in as well. Joe at Chicane said I should see about 365-380 to the wheels I was told. If I get in at 365 to the Wheels I will be ok with that as I plan to go with the intercooler upgrade and some sort of catback exhuast next year.
Red Devil what are you saying about 500hp? Is there something going to be released from Saleen for the 99-04 cars that will do that?
Yes. through SpeedLab. Series 5 is a really crazy blower, its capable of up to 20psi. We are probably going to work on a kit for it that will allow it to run a lower boost set up that will be safe for stock lower ends, that can probably put you around 450 RWHP.

I apologize but I thought the series 5 blowers were for the 05 on up cars and the series 4 blowers were for 99-04 cars? Can you put an Series 5 blower on an 99-04 car?

Yes you can, the series V was put on the 03-04 extremes, I will find the picture that show the difference between the two, the series V would be worth the call to JDM.

I surely hope Saleen redesigned the intake manifold and intercooler to make that statement! If not, your just spinning your wheels.....no pun intended

Thank you Tim , I forgot about the upgraded blower on the E cars. I thought they were running the same as the regular blowers on the 03-04 normal SC cars. I thought it was all internal mods and then more boost with fuel pumps My Bad. But I can't see spending say $4-5K for that series blower w/o first trying to get more out of a Series 4 which is supposed to be a pretty good blower in itself right?. IE: Porting it and then better Intercooller and Heat Exchanger. Do you agree? Its gotta be less then buying a whole new blower. What is this kit your going to offer have in it? Can I assume a bottom end of a 99-04 Saleen (non E car) will handle up to 450 RWHP Now? Based off what your saying there will be a detuned version being offered that will have that level of HP.

Good point Casey the manifold needed some serious porting to release the full potential and the intercooler....well a picture says a thousand words. The intercooler on the right is Chicane's the one on the left is Saleen's
