Hey peeps - I finally got my engine together and static timed the bugger. Now I'm trying to properly time the engine but I can't as the new timing chain cover I placed on the engine doesn't have a timing pointer cast into it, and I do not see a place where an external sheet metal pointer is supposed to be mounted.

Does anyone have a photo of the mounting point for the pointer, a photo of a mounted pointer, or a manner of guaging the timing without the presence of a pointer?

Thanks,

Ziggy

Hey Zig...time it by ear.  Get it where it breathes easily and at the highest rpm's, then start backing off until you hear a load.  Lock the dizzy down there then drive it.  Floorboard it and see if it launches or spits back at you through the carb or if it ratttles from pre-detonation.    Adjust the dizzy from there.  Old worn out engines can't always be timed with a light for an accurate timing.  Use your ears.

THanks Soaring --

What do you mean by breathing easy and hearing a load?
What will the rattle sound like?

I can tell you don't have a lot of experience with timing engines.  That's OK.  If you turn your distributor one way you will notice the speed (RPM's) of the engine picking up and getting faster.  If you turn it the other way you will notice it slowing down.  What you want to do is get it at a fast RPM then turn it the other way to get it to slow down to where it sounds like a good idle at about 800 RPM.
