I just wanted to point out some generalized info, as I have no experience with car tires; only bikes. First ask your self the reason you want the tires, and then determine if you care about profiling. If you are squeezing on a tire larger than the width of the rim, your tire is contoured rather than profiled flat, so in terms of traction, you are beating yourself. Just because it can be done, doesn't mean it should be. If you are running 235/50/18, going to a 275/40/18 can be done as far as I know, but I wouldn't want to because of the contour. Even that might be too wide and near impossible...not sure, cause technically, I think that would require a 9.5 - 10 inch rim. Simply looking at it, 235mm is 9.25, so on your current 8.5 if that is what you have, you are probably running the same thing (235, 45, 17) or the afore mentioned.

I assume that you intend to keep those 20" wheels . . . and you're already as wide as you should go on them.
255/35's are right at the upper limit for 8.5" wide wheels. 265's either require at least a 9" wide wheel (for 35 and lower profile sizes) or are almost certainly too tall to fit (265/45 and taller), with nothing in between to possibly satisfy both requirements.
