i've got a question. if you have headers, catted X-pipe, and axle-backs, is there any part of the stock exhaust left that would need replacing? i know that an exhaust is as strong as it's largest restriction so i would want nothing left of the stock system.

also approximately how much would good shorty headers and a good catted x-pipe be? could i install them myself? how hard would that be? if i can't, how much would it be to get a shop to do it? i love the sound of the shorties, catted X, and corsa axle-backs. will i get a power gain out of that?

kick ass thread, this is my first posting here! how's it goin dude? thanks for gettin my clip up!

if anyone is considering these (mbrp) i have to say, they make driving the car addictive! one of my favorite things to do is punch it under a highway overpass, sounds kinda like a nascar when it screams through and echoes! also, the tips look humongous! these axlebacks are sweet, and highly unique. ask yourself, how many people do you know with the mbrp's? if you do get 'em, go through lethal, those guys hook it up!

now you may be wondering, what is on the stang in my driveway?

bone stock exhaust.  for now.

but i plan to get an offroad prochamber and some mac axlebacks.  what i've found is that the MAC's are easily, without question, the best sounding chambered muffler there is.  an h pipe would sound good, but it needs some of that screaming sound, but not too much that it crackles, so ill go with the prochamber.

and BTW: here is a clip of the MBRP "loudmouth" style axlebacks:

this is llsandsll's car (from these forums).  sounds pretty badass if you ask me.

haha glad u like em man lol.

one thing to be said about the MBRP's: they sound ever so slightly different than the SLP's, but probably only i could tell.  a tiny bit more aggressive.  maybe its just me.  but i think they look better too.

i think the sound is a bit less hollow, maybe fuller sounding than the SLP's, possibly because the tips are a bit shorter, so less room for echo.

Not sure about the price of a shop but if you want gains from the exhaust go with Long Tubes. It also makes the exhaust sound deeper, but if all you want is the sound of the shorties more power to you. As far installing yourself depends on your mechanics skill. Me and my buddy dropped my K-member to install my LTs but he is a front end man at Ford.

well then i'm guessing for 0 mechanic experience it would not be recommended as a first or second mod? i listened to the sound clip with the shorties, catted x, and corsa axle-back and it was the perfect sound. i've never heard that setup with LT's. how much more power do you get with LT's versus shorties?

LT's will increase power above baseline, shorties are likely to reduce to power from the baseline.

long tubes will dramatically change the sound of your car.  for some of the combinations that would otherwise be iffy, it would make even them sound very deep and muscular.   they are the ultimate sound mod.

shorties would give u almost no power/sound gain to speak of.  so not worth it its not even funny.

My question is when I listen to the vids of cars with O/R X pipes as the only change or the multiple vids when the same O/R X pipe set up, sometimes they sound raspy, some are clear, some pop when off throttle.  Is this a function of the recording?  Or does the sound differ if the exhaust warms up after initial start up?  Or is it something else?  Cause 1 vid sounds great and the next sounds crappy.

Prometheus prime,

I have listened to your clip about a dozen times and that is the exact sound I want.  I love the off throttle pop/snap sound as well as the ripping sound when on throttle.  Did you have the set up minus the resonators?  Was the sound different?  I have the SLP loudmouths so I would think it is similar to your straight pipe.  I was thinking about the UPR or pypes O/R X pipe.  I know Pypes has a new X pipe mid muffler set up that appears to be similar to your set up, but I would like to keep costs down and not replace my axle backs as I like that loudmouth sound.  Also was your placement of the resonators custom for that sound or will resonators anywhere after the x pipe make the same sound?

Thanks so much for your help, I have been endlessly debating this mid pipe selection step.

UrS4

When I first installed the x-pipe is was crazy load and just sounded like crap. That was with the straight pipes and no resonators. I actually put on a stock set of mufflers to drive home because there was just no way I could drive it.  I went and had the resonators put on the next day. The raspiness will change slightly on the position the resonators are placed. Mine are all the way back right before the pipes go up over the rear axles. This was mainly due to clearance issues with the driveshaft. You should be able to get the resonators and installed for under $150 depending on the shop you go to.

This is an awesome thread. Brother, you are the man for putting it together. I`m going to watch every vid and listen to every clip, even though I`m on dial up and it might take all day.

I went with a generic brand. I was going to order these which are basicly the same design just pricier.

18 inches was the average length. The shorter it is the louder it will be. This seem to be the perfect length.
