How do you measure the wheel size, not the tire size?

Rim width is the distance between the outside edges of the bead seat.

Rim diameter is the total wheel diameter when measured from bead seat to bead seat.

thanks, is there any way I can find these with the tires mounted and on the car? If I measure the rim width I get 10inches....
Thanks

For alloy wheels, if you subtract 1"from the outside flange-width measurementyou'll be close enough. You almost certainly have 9's.

The 275's and a very few of the 285/40's are tire mfr approved for 9" wide wheels.

Most of the 285/40 and as near as I can tell all of the 285/35 tires want at least 9.5" wheels, and the 295's aren't listed for anything narrower than 10". While I can't ethically advise you to select a tire that's listed for 9.5" or wider for your 9's, I will note that the 285's that list 9.5 as a minimum are only just barely over a line that has to be drawn somewhere and let you take it from there. 295's, on the other hand, really do need wider wheels, and since you'd need new wheels you might as well make them at least 10" wide.

255 /35 -front and backs are 265 /35 on her now.

so I could get by with some 285's /35 on the back and go with a 275 /35 front. Correct, What brand? Goodyear F1 gs-d3?

Time to spend a little time looking at pages that link off this one (http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tirebran.jsp). Like the one you mentioned (http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Goodyear&tireModel=Eagle+F1+GS-D3) (but do look at a few others for comparison). Scroll down to the survey results, and then read a few reviews for RWD cars in general.Don't just read the first few that come up - no tire is really worth a '10' as there are always compromises somewhere. It's just that the sort always starts offfrom the highest rating number.

I'm not trying to duck this. It's just that your needs and/or priorities may differ from mine by enough that you might not be happy with what I would choose for myself, which I can't help doing on at least a subconscious level.
