So, I am 15 and I want to get a 68 mustang for my first car. Besides the money there is only one problem, my parents. I am afraid that they won't let me get one because of how powerful they are. How much more powerful is a 40 year old car than the newer hondas or dodges? I know they are more powerful, but is it too powerful for a first car? I need some good arguments from the people that know mustangs the best. Any help is welcomed.
tell them the truth and try to work on all the variables. if they say seatbelts suck and you could die, say well i'll get a job and buy modern 3 point belts just like the honda. they arent all that powerful unless you pretty much got a modern rebuild on it because the engine is tired and doesnt put out all that much power to begin with. the major difference between driving the two is rear wheel drive. if you respect it and dont od with it you wont spin out. thats why they have that bad rap for a light ass end, because thats where all the powers comin from, not the front. they do have bad brakes but buy a conversion kit and problem solved. bad steering, get a rebuild. they are actually just as reliable if not more due to the simplicity of them. just remember, you're gonna have to do maintenance on them though, you cant be a lazy ass. by the way, im 16. welcome to the site and in my opinion the best around for this hobby.

I'm 17 and to get my 68 sport satellite, #'s matching 383 car I had to do some convincing to get my mom to approve. I had to put headrests in the car and I got a set of retractable shoulder belts from for XV motorsports. It cost me probably 250 bucks total, not a bad price to pay to be allowed to drive your cool muscle car around. I've got manual brakes on my car and they don't seem all that bad, but I will be putting in a disc brake conversion sometime in the future, but not right now. I'm on a budget and the brakes seem alright for now. Just keep your distance (don't tailgate...you can nail it at times, but just be smart about it). Classic cars are one of the best hobbies you can get into (if not the best) so I would really try hard in convincing your parents to let you get the car, and if its going to cost you a little extra its well worth it. - Scott
Is the car a V8..Either way it wont have TOO much power..Just do as much research as possible and kno all kinds of things about mustangs and ur parents will appreciate the extra effort...Thats ur best bet.And make sound like a good fathe son building project cuz it was for me.I guess i dont kno that pain of having to convince my parents cuz they were all for it..My dads only stipulation was that the car had to have a V8.(btw i was 15 when i got my car)good luck

yea these cars stock for stock wouldnt compete with most new V6 cars and even some 4 bangers the only thing is they sound like they are faster than they really are. Im 17(18 in 4 days) and my first car was a 66 mustang(i say was cause somebody ran a redlight and totalled it a couple of months ago) and it was actually my moms idea for me to get an older car instead of a newer one. If they say it isnt as safe as newer cars ask them if I(you) would be in an accident do you want me in something that is designed to crumble or something that is made of solid steel to protect me(you).

hey, id say its definatly somthing to go for. i think i can only second most of whats been said on here already, except watch out for using the "sold steel" argument". crumple zones are designed to sacrifice the car to save the driver. older cars tend to sacrafice driver becasue yee, the cars are solid... but, just to line it up...
piece of history. great learning experience. which can be valuable even on other cars. the old mustangs can be "improved" (safer apliances ect.) cheaper insurance, cuz theres no insurance left on the old things. and a there is just nothing else like em anymore. the feel, the look. (im 21 BTW, owned my first classic when i was 20) worked on firends aswell.
Thanks for all the replys.to flyingfool, there are a lot of classic mustangs in my area, but can you explain what you mean by cheaper insurance??? One of my dads main arguments were that they cost a lot to insure.
At your age, any car you drive will be expensive to insure. If you use the mechanical and automotive education bit, that might be a 'pleaser'. I waited until I was 21 (after I got out of the Navy), then did my own thing. Jim
get a six banger. insurance companies usually ask if it is a 6 or 8 for insurance rates. you dont have to tell them that you intend to put in an 8 at a later date.
Not necessarily. The insurance 'killers' for you are: lack of driving experience, age (15), sex (male), proficency in school (bad grades get higher premimums) and state laws, not the age of the car. You, yourself, cannot get automobile insurance until you are 18. Until then, you are a minor and are attached to an adult's policy. Therefore, the car will be under your family's 'blanket' policy. Jim
The v6 or v8 isnt that big of a deal to me now, I just want one that is reliable. Thanks for the replys. I was thinking I could buy a ****ty car and say that is my primary car for the insurance and have my dad say that the mustang is his and get really low rates on it.
it wont mater. my first car was a 78 datsun b210 (loved that car, want it back) and I got raked over the coals because of my age and gender. Face it as a teenager you are going to take it for insurance. I'm 32 with a decent record maried with a kid and I still get hammered for insurance. Insurance is a scam in my book. My last ticket came off my record a couple months ago and my insurance company raised my rates for it. My wife and I are always joking now that I need a ticket to lower our rates back down. Now you did it . got me on a rampage about insurance. Now I wont be able to go to sleep.

Your insurance is partly higher than your sisters' simply because of the fact that your a guy. Insurance for guys is at least a hundred bucks more than girls. But i'm no expert...
I'm 16 myself, and got my 69 mach 1 when i was 15. I was originally looking for a 68 fastback, but came across this beauty. At first my parents just flattered me and really wern't into the whole classic car thing, but I turned them. My dad used to work on cars as a kid so it was actually pretty for it. And now that I have the car, he has really gotten into it and enjoys working on it and is looking for a 68 coupe to work on for my grandfather.
Just be persistant and you can turn them. Rather than pointing out the bad, such as the brakes, seatbelts, and the like, point out the good. In 68 they have the collabsable steering columns, so in a front end collision you won't get stabbed throught the heart. Also, you will be rolling in a steel cage, someting that will tear another car up if you hit it or it hits you (except maybe a SUV or big truck, but thats the case for any car). On top of that, for a 68 you can find every single part possible for your car, and they are easy to work on so you can learn and do the labor yourself (except major mechanical parts).
Its very doable man, and you can find a coupe all finished, painted, and running great for less than a new car like the ones u are talking about. But better yet, find one that is a daily driver, looks good, and you can still work on for cheaper.
Oh yeah and get a V8 (289 or 302), because you will most likely regret having an inline 6 if you keep the car down the road and will wish you got a V8. A stock 2-barrel 289 makes like 220 hp i believe, stock and new, so that isnt' too much power at all if you find a nice, non-mollested car.
ya im 17 and i dont know how i got my mom to let me get my 67 mustang the insurance is out of the roof. and my moms afraid of driving it because its a 390 bigblock with no power steering or power brakes... i love old cars but i also love power steering.
my parents were all for me getting an old car, the only stipulation they ahd was for me to graduate HS first. so i did, 1 month later i brought home my 69 coupe, my dad realized it was a 4v cleveland, and he was pleased since he had that same engine in his 73 mach 1 when he was my age
