Default Speedometer Problem

On my 67 coupe the speedometer is acting up. Sometimes it will work right and then it wont. It just started doing this last Thursday. It would stop at around 35 MPH and wouldnt go down to 0. Now it maxes out and wont move. I have checked the speedometer cable from where it connects to the transmission to where it connects to the speedometer, and the cable it tight not loose. So what do i do?

Take out the gear in the transmission and inspect it. 5 dollars to a hole in a donut says it is boogered and needs replacing. Be sure to replace it with the same color. But, if I lose my 5 bux, then take the cable out and hit it with a good dousing of graphite lubricant.

Mine was acting up last week. It would work when the car sat for a little while, but would quit after a few miles. I when to Alamo Mustang and grabbed a new gear. That fixed the issue. I also have a shorter than normal cable, but the gear fixed my issues. This is at least something easy to do. Ususally when the speedo shakes it is a lube problem, but when things stop, for me any way, it has been either a broken cable or a broken gear.

Is replacing the gear pretty easy, or do you have to drop the transmission and open it up? I may have to do this this weekend... hopefully it'll be just tightening the cable up to the transmission, but I don't know yet.
