Default bumper question

I have a few rusty-looking spots on my chrome bumpers. is there any way to get them out? i have tried a chrome polish and they are still there. can i jus get a good buffing compound and buff them out? or should i jus get it re-plated? is that possible?

New bumpers cost about $90. Getting them chromed can run you up to $500 each. I touched up the rear on my 65 with steel wool and Turtle Wax Chrome Polish and it came out ok. The front I will have to replace.

When I resto'd my brother's '66 vert in about 1991, we had all the original chrome pieces replated at a shop that was still 'flying below the radar of EPA regulations' and I think it still cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $700-$1000. You're going to have to go overseas for affordable plating.

Mix the Coke with burbon and drink it, then use chrome polish on the bumper. Any acid will eat out what ever steel that is exposed and - surprise of all surprises - will rust it faster. Remember, the main ingredient in Coke is - water.
