Default 99-04 chrome wheel problem

I have had the car for about 9 months and I have noticed on it that what I thought was where the chrome had chipped away at the base of the spokes of the rim where they meet the exterior of the rim (run on sentence, huh?) is actually some type of hard build up. I'm assuming from brake dust over the years. Well, I have scraped a few small spots off but I'm worried about scratching the chrome underneath. Like I said, it's a pretty hard build up, and I know it will come off, but how? Any suggestion? It's annoying...

I would agree that removing the brake dust is a good idea. Not only does it deminish the nice chrome shine, but over time, will cause harm to certain finishes on car.

Naaa, this is to hard of a build up. It's very small specs. Like I said, I have also since I've owned the car, thought it was corrosion and had eaten away at the chrome. Never washed off. Today I took a small pocket knife and just scraped a few specs of it away. I could do it to the rest but I'm just that it would scratch up the chrome.

I had this on my last pair of chrome wheels. I used VERY FINE steel wool to clean it off. I didn't have to scrub hard, just came off easily. I think it is mineral deposits left behind from water. Use as fine a wool as you can, and should be good.

I'll try that along with some form of mild chemical that breaks down mineral deposits such as CLR. Are you SURE even aVERY fine steel wool won't scratch up thechrome?

I had no problems with doing this. I had done it about 10 or 12 times over the years, andmany times looked VERY CLOSE to see if any marks left behind and never found any! (even after the 10th)The wheels I had at the time (were not Saleen wheels) had extremely cheap chrome plating too. I think it would be a good idea to try an area that is not too exposed to be sure you are comfortable. Also, I don't believe I ever tried it on the chrome plated plastic lug cover, so cannot be sure about plastic parts (but would think it would be ok as well)
