I really like the Mustang, and favor the idea of a V6/mt and modding... But why oh why is the 4.0L so low tech? Even the "new" Taurus gets more hp and torque numbers than a V6 Mustang. Is anything changing for the 08MY and the V6??

well we make about the same torque as the duratec in the taurus/edge but alot earlier in the rpm band. This gives the car a more "muscle" feel. Plus the mustang is quite a bit cheaper than the taurus...3,000 bucks cheaper. And if they put a 260hp duratec in the base model, almost nobody would buy a gt. The mustang is just as fast, and has more mod potential. Im sure within the next few years though ford will switch over to a new drivetrain for the base model to keep up with the camaro though.

I don't see the low tech thing but thanks for asking....nice to have you here.

The 4.0 had tons of potential. Just look at what people on this forum and others are doing with them. Get the Mustang, you won't be sorry.

Yeah, I know there is a lot of potential there with that engine/car. I've done a lot of looking around, and the Mustang V6 is the 'fastest-cheapest' car on the market. Thrown on a throttle body, intake, exhaust, and a new rear end... It's a fast car. But with so many other V6's out there with smaller displacements pumping out so much more go juice from the factory, that's what makes me hesitant in making the final plunge. A 210/240 rear wheel drive car with an mt, for under 19K is very appealing especially when you look at cars like the Civic Si or a turbo-Subaru, even the 350Z, which is a good looking car, I don't think the price per bang for the buck is there. I'm right on the fence of purchasing.... Decisions, decisions! I really like the orange, but then again, the darker red is attractive in its own right. Decisions, decisions....

If you're going to compare to a dual OHC import use the GT as your base of comparison; it's still cheaper than it's competition (Infiniti G35, Nissan 350Z, Subaru WRX, etc...) The 4.0 Mustang is a good $10k cheaper than those cars; compare on price not engine size, thats what determines class of car. The 4.0 isn't low tech, it's just old tech.

Actually, I'm going to make the plunge and go for her. I shouldn't say this, but I used to work at Ford and I used to have the inside scoop on the S197 long before it ever hit the streets. It kind of sucks now to be on the outside and wondering what the 08MY will bring... There are rumors of a new V6 that I am hearing now. If nothing changes on the V6, I'm picking up a discounted 07MY V6 Pony Package... If they change the 6 cylinder, then...? I may have to wait. Actually I am not impressed by those imports that I mentioned. There's just so few cars on the market now that are "sports" cars and whats there are rice burners that may drive nice, but have no backbone to them. My fiance isn't going to let me plunk down the coins on a GT, but I can always piece meal together a cool V6. Acutally, now I'm wondering what the difference is in the heads between the Explorer and Mustang than the Explorer picks up an extra 15 or so in the torque department. Would that be a simple bolt on for some extra torque? Hmm... Need to check into that...

Well listen you really haven't listened to anything that has been said. The Mustang is not changing the ENGINE in 2008, that info is avaible in the dealership showroom and all over the internet. You are picking the Mustang why? for the enging? Then get a GT its the bigger engine. The other cars you mentioned are the top of the line model that have high revving untunable engines....its a fact. I own the 4.0 explore and I can tell you the Mustang is a better set up for power. The explorer is geared different in the trans and rear to allow for more towing.... You can ask most here if you do the Mustang right it will blow the Explorer away especially MINE. JUST GO BUY ONE! or test drive it and you'll see.
