'65 Suspension noise... how far to go when replacing?
Hi everyone. I haven't posted here since putting the 65 away last fall. Well she's been out and about about a month now and its time to be doing some work on her again.
My suspension has to be worked on, and I'm wondering how far to go.
I am replacing most bushings in the entire front suspension. Most of the rubber is pretty shot.
I am changing the lower control arms with ball joint and lower shock mounts and coil insulators.
I have a clunking noise when I hit washboard type roads. little bumps make it clunk on the left side. If I rock the car up and down hard pushing on the front bumper I don't hear the noise.
Since the shop has to take everything apart anyhow, I'm wondering how much I should just replace rather than put back some really old parts that do funtion right now but may be changed in the next year or two. The cost of kits seem pretty enticing and the labour wouldn't be that much since they have to take it all apart anyhow.
Also, any ideas on what the clunking noise I hear might be? that's gotta go.
Thanks

Sounds like your strut rod bushings and your sway bar bushings are shot also.

I just replaced everything-and I mean everything-and it still makes the same noises!!!! it rides much better-I am hoping the bushings need to be broken in a little- Scott

I jst got my 68 back on the road yesterday, replaced the entire front and rear suspension, was making some crazy noises untill the alignment was corrected. You might consider replacing the upper and lower control arms too.
good luck

Mortman-thats great news-I still have to replace the tie rods and the centerlink-after that I can get the allignment done-hopefull this will get rid of the squeeks, clicks and clunks scott

I already replaced the strut rod bushings. And the lower control arms are on the way. as mentioned a whole bunch of bushings will be replaced as well. hopefully this helps.

When I got the '66 on the road, every bump caused a clunk from the rear and a host of squeaks and groans from the front. I replaced the shocks and to my surprise found the right rear shock upper mounting nuts had backed off and allowed the shock to bang around.
The car has sat for over 10 years in a garage. Next Thursday it goes in to have the front suspension bushings, springs, etc, replaced and aligned. I bought a urethane kit. The leafs are getting done, along with the bushings in the rear too.
