Default odometer problem

I have a '97 Convertible - 6 cylinder, with 132,000 miles. My odometer has just stopped working, along with the tripometer. The speedometer and tach are working just fine. The dealer tells me this is a $300+ part, for a $500+ repair job. Does anyone have any suggestions of how to get this taken care of for less than that? I paid off the car a year ago and have put money into things like tires, brakes, tune-up ... general things to make it last longer. This is not an expense I ever considered! Is it even legal for me to be driving it? I'm a teacher, therefore, I can't really do anything about this during the summer months. Is it okay for me to drive it? I love my car! I never imagined this would be something I'd have to deal with.
