Default '05 - '07 V6 vs '70 Boss 302

When I was growing up the '70 Boss 302 was my dream car. The closestIcame to owning one was a '70 302 2V at 220 HP GROSS

Just ran accross the specs of the famed Boss at stangsunleased

Performance:
(Boss 302) 302/290: 0-60 in 6.5 sec, 1/4 mile in 14.8 sec @ 96 mph.

I knew we were close to that level, but not this close.

Yeah, my '82 GT 5.0 only had 157 hp. No wonder I am impressed with our V6.

Our 4.0L's benefit from 35+ years of advances in technology over the original muscle cars. Just think about how much better our street radials are now than the Poly-Glas tires from the 60's. Slap a pair of DR's on an old muscle car and the times will drop. But it's true - our definition of a performance car has changed over the years (for the better), and I am very thankful for that! VROOM!

EDIT: As an aside, my 4.0L V6 is currently two tenths faster in the 1/4 mile than my '66 289/auto coupe (see avatar), which drifted away from being stock in the 1980's. Shhhhhh - don't tell anyone in this section, but the '66 is more fun to drive than my S197.

I remember reading the car mags when the 86 Mustang GT came out, with the first SEFI. The horsepower actually dropped from 85 to 86, because of head design, and the mags couldn't stop saying this was the beginning ofthe end for shadetree mechanics. Nobody was going to be able to tune their cars anymore - what you got from the factory was what you got, no more bolt-ons, no more tuning.

Today, looking back, they couldn't be more wrong. But, back then, I don't think anybody knew what to do with these new ECU's. Not that the electronicswere too sophisticated - the speedo was still connected to the drivetrain, and the accelerator pedal was still connected to the throttle. It worked well enough, but it was lightyears away from today's standards.
