67SuperSnake 05-24-2007, 02:05 AM I don't know where I left off, but I will start posting from several posts back, in a few days!
I have been so busy, but the car is moving along very fast.
Note to Glen: Un pinning and deleting are two different thing. I KNOW you did not do it on purpose. But if it happens again, I will drive to Wimberly, paint a Camaro Rally stripe from the base of your windshield to the front of your hood and down each front fender (OH Yeah, Chevy all the way) in Plum Crazy Purple (Mopar all the way) while making you sit in my car watching my in-car TV telling you why I think RESTOMODS are better than Plane Jane Mustangs, while drinking every last beer in your fridge! ha That would be a hoot, wouldn't it!
But seriously, I will post my progress in a few days. See you all in August!
hellion_79 05-24-2007, 04:12 AM You should post it in a cardomain so it wont get deleted.[>:]
my77stang 05-24-2007, 11:35 AM agreed
hellion_79 05-25-2007, 03:01 AM I just tried to sign up on www.cardomain.com (http://www.cardomain.com) nothing popped up when I hit register. It took me to a page but nothing came up besides the heading. Is this a glitch or is my computer messes up?
superdavid 05-25-2007, 03:06 AM I'll help you drink his beer! :D
67SuperSnake 05-25-2007, 04:39 AM I don't want to post it here out of professional courtesy, but if anybody wants to see the whole thread again, it can be found.

YOUR CAR IS SICK.
Ha Thanks.
I'm gonna start posting some updates. Like I said, I don't know where I left off, but here goes! ready?
67SuperSnake 05-25-2007, 05:38 AM I received the Ram dual clutch and installed it and the transmission today.

67SuperSnake 05-25-2007, 05:40 AM I lifted the engine about 1" and moved it back about 1/2". That cleared all but one header bolt. It cleared the R&P problem.
Figured out the problem with the trans. Out it comes and a new smaller piston will be used in the Hydraulic throwout bearing.
Started working on the doors. I am replacing most everything, so this will be a NEW car when I get finsihed. I installed the power door locks, new door latches, strikers, lock rods, door lock pull ups, and chrome rings, interior door handle shafts, door handles, and door courtesy lights. Missing one door handle, and the anti rattle piece that goes on the driver side door handle to latch rod, that screws to the inside of the door and keeps the rod from rattling. I don't know if they sell that piece.

67SuperSnake 05-25-2007, 05:40 AM No picture, but I lowered the seat pans. Those Shelby Signature seats sit too high IMO. A lot of work, but I would notice it everytime I got in the car if I didn't do it!
The devil is in the details!!
67SuperSnake 05-25-2007, 05:41 AM You know you are getting close when this starts happening. Noise, vibration & heat control by Quiet Ride Solutions (http://www.quietride.com/). It is a 2 stage project. Sound control by Dynamat. And then pre-cut heat control mats by Heat Shield.
Many pieces in tight places like above the fender wells inside the rear fenders. It takes a lot of time to do it right. But should be worth the effort.

67SuperSnake 05-25-2007, 05:42 AM The dash is all buttoned up except for the glove box. It will stay off until I start the hookup of the FAST EFI. One plug at a time.
http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l259/rsowell_2006/SoundHeatControl5.jpg
All the sound and heat control is done. Looks like some of NASA's guys have been working on it.

67SuperSnake 05-25-2007, 05:42 AM I started working on the carpet, interior panels and back seat.
http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l259/rsowell_2006/RearSeatInstall.jpg
Hornblower 05-25-2007, 07:46 AM Either I need to get my glasses updated, or you need to focus that camera of yours. :D When you moved the engine back 1/2", how did that change the geometry of the transmission, etc?
67SuperSnake 05-25-2007, 01:04 PM Sorry about the pictures, they can be blurry some times. Moving the engine back was to give me some room for the R&P steering.

superdavid 05-25-2007, 09:17 PM It starts! Sweet! I didn't know you had it running!
my77stang 05-25-2007, 09:18 PM YAY it runs!!!!! i will say, it sounds so tame though - i thought it was gonna be lumpity dumpity. i bet you cant wait to go tear ass with it huh?
67SuperSnake 05-25-2007, 09:22 PM Yeah ,that was 30 minutes ago. And I wen back out after I posted and started it again, a little more agressive on the throttle, and WOW. That video doesn't even tell it. I was trying to be gentle on the VERY FIRST START!
EmperorOfChicken 05-25-2007, 09:57 PM it sounds like it wants to eat babies. i still want a ride:D
stangs67 05-26-2007, 03:18 AM What do you believe the top speed is on that beast?

Limited only by your cojones and the road you are on!
ha, really.... it is limited by the aerodynamics. So, over 170 is achievable.

You are coming down in August, right?
EmperorOfChicken 05-26-2007, 05:35 AM maybeh, i want to get my 3.80s and a posi before, or i will be ashamed[&o][:@]
67SuperSnake 05-30-2007, 01:08 AM Well, I finished the entire drive train. After taking the trans out, bellhousing off, clutch and pressure plate off, putting the bellhousing and trans back on, and checking for end play (it was fine). Remove the trans and bell housing, putting the clutch and pressure plate back in, bell housing back on, fixing the hydraulic throwout bearing (shorter length piston for clearance) and re-installing the trans, driveshaft, exhaust, etc. It is DONE!!!!!
If I had a radiator I would be driving it around the block (without a windshield) tonight.
Clutch is strong but not too strong. You would get a small workout in Houston traffic, but it is not as bad as the one Super Snake I tried. It pumped up immediately, and stays firm even after sitting.
Mykkus 05-30-2007, 01:47 AM Oh man...you gotta be FIENDING.....
How soon til she's drivable?

Frothing at the mouth!!! Can you imagine this beast going from 60 to 120 in a snap?
Hopefully within 30 days. Maybe 2 weeks!
my77stang 05-30-2007, 02:41 AM yeah man, i remember driving my car with no interior.... sitting on a bag of fertilizer cause my seats were out.... and my hand stuck through the hole in the hump holding the shift linkage. i just HAD to drive that thing around the block (and to the auto parts store, and the gas station, and where ever else i could give myself an excuse to drive it LOL)

Hey, looking at the vid, did the blower suck something in the first time you started it? Hope not. Very nice indeed. I take it that you resolved the problems I seen on the MSD tech site with your FAST unit. Again, I'm jealous, you have it running, I'm so far from that stage...Boyit sounds so nice...[sm=smiley20.gif]

You caught that. It was the plastic cap to the blower. It did notsuck it in. [sm=oopssign.gif]Cudo's to you!
Yes, I resolved it without their help. The FAST system was not firing. Turns out you have to plug in the "terminating end" to the "Hall/Cam" effect. The tech kept telling me I needed to buy the $34 adapter, when it was in my kit!!!
Glad to know your good. We have to wire tie all the plug wires to the intake because the procharger F2 we use will suck anything in thats not tied down. Have had to clean out the intercooler outat the track because of belt shrapnel sucked in..
67SuperSnake 05-30-2007, 03:39 AM That S/C is like a Super vacuum cleaner isn't it?
I am not going to start it again till I havesome type of filtration system on.I need 3 1/2 aluminum tubing/pipe and a filter. Know anywhere to get it?
RGH69 05-30-2007, 05:35 PM Hey, I can't wait till you post a vid of you really getting on the throttle of that monster. I also noticed in your other pic that you are mounting the GPS antenna on the dash. We were thinking of doing the same on ours but we are planning to do one for GPS and one for XM and mounting them on the passenger side. Do you ever plan on adding XM?

I can't wait either. But I gotta let the old body rest. I put 12 hours in yesterday.
I probably won't add XM radio. My thought for putting it on the driver side was to hide it a little with the state inspection & state license stickers.

67SuperSnake 06-01-2007, 01:14 AM I installed the headliner. A good suggestion is to use the old windlace, cut it in to small 2-3" pieces and use them as a clamp while you glue it in place. Then use the new windlace around the doors when you glue. Do the doors first, then use all the small pieces around the front & back glass area when you glue the headliner there. Leave them on until you install the glass.

67SuperSnake 06-01-2007, 01:24 AM I installed the chrome pieces around the door today. You can spend HOURS on this stuff to get it right. After That I nstalled the chrome piece that holds the weatherstrip. I used some 3M strip calk on the backside where the old cork gasket used to be. Just added two small runners to the chrome piece and then screwed it in place.

Its actually a Deal I made with myself...gotta lose more weight first. helps me stick to the diet.
fastbackford351 06-02-2007, 09:46 PM That is a nice car indeed. However, in all fairness, saying it is the "best" car is subjective and open to interpretation.
I have seen many very nice cars on this site and to be sure, this is a top level contender.
Soaring 06-02-2007, 09:52 PM Yeah, we classics get a stab at the Ride of the Month contest here twice a year, so I fully expect that Snake to be a contender, but you are right. There are some absolutely drop dead gorgeous classics on here that have won the contest in the past. But, there is a difference between getting up close and personal as a judge at a real car show and looking at pictures.
67SuperSnake 06-02-2007, 11:27 PM I cut a piece out of the gas tank filler tube at the tank to make it more level, and not want to spit back at you when filling. Permanently mounted the wiring from the EFI to the passenger fender relays in wire loom.
But the big story is I installed the rear inside quarter panels (3 times each to get them right with the roll bar cut out), the rear seats, seat belts, carpet, and console. Carpet is not all the way finished, but is about 80% done (mostly cut, in place, etc. )
I'm not worried about the rear seat wrinkle right now. After it gets out in the heat, if that doesn't do it I might spray a little water on in and rub it in!
Like my Mustang rear seat belts? Also, look at the trim moulding where the roll bar meets the rear inside quarter panels.

I'm not worried about the rear seat wrinkle right now. After it gets out in the heat, if that doesn't do it I might spray a little water on in and rub it in!

I think you should be worried about those seats. When they new upholstery is installed it should fit like clove, besauce it will not shrink. When upholstery is done correct way it should not have any wrinkles and cornes will fitt nicely. It seems that your upholstery maker has been in hurry and had not time for details.
67SuperSnake 06-05-2007, 12:38 AM I finished the carpet. I have never been so glad that all the back breaking work is about done. I installed the center console for good. Installed the shifter. I had to bolt the bottom shifter bolt from underneath the console (when it was loose). The extra insulation and new carpet makes the installation process a PITA! Kick panels and door sill plates (stainless steel) are done. Well, I have one to go. Seat floor brackets are bolted down. Seat belt bolts were put in before the carpet. It sure makes it easier to find those holes.
http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l259/rsowell_2006/CarpetFinished.jpg
I even installed the overhead console w/map lights! Installing those screws before the headliner made the process a little easier to find.

I am pretty sure you are correct. We have a leather couch that when it was new had several wrinkles like that. The service guy came and took a regular hair dryer to the panels and they streched nicely. Took most of the day though.

While I had it out of the car for the last two months, I could have set it out in the sun for several days and probably accomplished just that. I just wasn't thinking. But I am hoping you are right!

A big hole here, I will reinforce it with a piece of angle. I had to remove the A/C condenser and the brackets, cut them, move them to the back of the condenser, bend the lines a little, but it all lines up now. More pictures when I get the upper bracket to the radiator welded on. The lower radiator mounts are just 2 pins ( 1/2" ) with a rubber insulator:

Beautiful workmanship Rich.... everything looks well thought out .
Thanks, James. I wished I could have started it today, but the lower radiator hose gave me a fit. Since I moved the lower intake from the radiator out to the lower driver side, none of the hoses I found would work. I am probably going to have to uses two different hoses with a cut in the middle, joined by a 2" aluminum pipe and hose clamps. Custom equipment means customs hoses that nobody makes.
JamesW 06-14-2007, 11:20 PM I heard that... I saw (can't find it tho) where someone took that 2" aluminum pipe you mentioned and welded in a bung for the fan temp sensor. Supposedly this worked well because it balanced out the temp control of the intake thermostat.

supersnake flare the ends of the pipe a tiny bit will help keep the hose on it. and they make both in kentucky whiskey and bourbon but bourbon can only be made in kentucky .
The problem is that there is no hose for this application. The original radiator (top to bottom flow) had the hose to the enginecoming out ofthe bottom center of the radiator. Now it is bottom Driver side. Nobody makes the hose. I will get it.
67SuperSnake 06-16-2007, 02:10 PM I have the inside almost done. I didn't take pictures, but all I have to do is vacuum and put in the front seats, front seat belts and glove box. After a radiator hose and a cold air intake,I will be starting this puppy.
andrewmp6 06-17-2007, 12:24 AM im saying buy a couple hoses with alot of bends in it use the bends only and a piece of pipe for the straight. or just have some pipes bent to fit and use some rubber hose to hook it up to the radiator and water pump
67SuperSnake 06-18-2007, 05:34 PM Well, I took her around the block. I have three issues.
1.) Transmission has got to come back out. The input shaft must be hitting the crank, which makes it act like the clutch is not releasing all the way.
2.) Something is rubbing like a rotor against a caliper, or the like. I was so tired I did not lift it to inspect, but will get to it tomorrow.
3.) Running way rich. Now comes the tuning with the laptop.
No fluid leaks, no brake problems, no other issues at this time. Still got to get the alignment, cold air intake and A/C charge.

once you have the proper bends and shape for the radiator hose go to your local autoparts store and hask them to let you in the back where all the hoses hang. in about 15 minutes you will most likely emerge with something that will work
andrewmp6 06-20-2007, 09:28 AM use a feeler gauge on both front rotors see if the problem side has less room. the clutch problem sounds fun good luck
67SuperSnake 06-21-2007, 08:08 PM Hood still off till I get the EFI/Dyno guy over here. I Changed the plugs because they were fouled.
Not many new parts are left to put on.
I am thinking about making an upper shroud for the attachment to the upper grill. Since I moved the radiator forward 1 1/2" , the old hood latch bracket wont clear the condenser. I have to make something. Either something small 8-12" wide, all the way to the hood pin brackets, or something that goes fender to fender and under the top grill slat.

andrewmp6 06-22-2007, 05:48 AM covering that big hole with a sheet of metal would help keeping air at the radiator. plus you can paint it to match the car or make out of alum or stainless and polish it will shine like chrome.

Supersnake-Hey, im thinking bout supercharging my 68 coupe but i was wondering do you think it will mess up my engine in the longrun? Also, why did you choose a supercharger over a turbo??
I am no expert, but your engine has to be designed for supercharging or turbo charging (lower compression, stronger rods, etc) I don't think I would put a power adder on an older engine.
I went S/C over turbo for one reason only. A Turbo is more efficient and was my first choice, but stuffing a 427FE in that engine bay left very little room for anything else. I am still worrying about hood clearance.

Thanks for the heads up on the SA Mustang Club show.
67SuperSnake 06-26-2007, 01:44 AM I had to install an extra water temp sending unit. If I tapped in to the EFI water temp probe, it may have caused a LOW temp reading by dividing the signal. So I tee'd the manifold, and added the dash gauge water temp sending unit.
I also built an aluminum water shield (2 sides only) for the under-fender 12" longconical air filter.
mySAVIOReigns 06-26-2007, 12:03 PM Man, I wish I had known you lived north of San Antonio- I was down there 2 weeks ago and got some wheels from JamesW (on the way)and a brake kit from Dennis (discbrakeswap.com).
well, one day I'll be back :)
67SuperSnake 06-28-2007, 03:08 AM Got a lot done today. Took a day off to regroup. Those damn gremlins keep sneaking up and screwing with everything.
For instance, the drive shaft delivered to me was too short. Well I ordered, and received from UP (a few weeks late) a longer driveshaft. This fixed one problem but created another. The front universal knuckle started hitting the H Pipe. Damn it!!!
OK I removed the H pipe and had it cut 3/4" on both sides to give me a little room. I also clocked the EFI sensor a little clockwise because it was getting very close to the frame. This allowed me to lift the transmission a little more, hopefully taking care of the shifting problem. We will see in the next few days:

67SuperSnake 06-28-2007, 03:20 AM Got the front end aligned today also. I stayed with they guy doing the alignment, and boy am I glad. He really didn't know that you could rotate the plate to move the LCA out for the negative camber.
The figures from TCP:
Camber 0- ½ degree neg
Castor 2 ½-3 pos
Toe 1/16” -1/8” In
http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l259/rsowell_2006/FrontEndAligned.jpg
But We got it done. Front and rear end. It was only out a little, but a little sure makes a big difference in the way it drives. Now I got to lift the rear a little more. There are adjustments on the UP rear Coilover system to allow for this:

I called the engine builderand questioned that very thing. I was told "Yes, that FAST XFI box was used on the engine dyno." I was told it would have a basic street tune. It was barely usable. But wait....

ha ha Everybody in the oil change place stopped what they were doing (all 6 of them) and came out to the car. All the other customers were pissed off because of the wait! ha ha
I think most engine builders have there dyno numbers inflated a little, or even a lot, to sell more engines. And granted, the engine dyno was probably done with no air intake restrictions (air cleaner and tubing), no muffler, perfect headers, etc. I have a lot of restrictions. But I cannot believe they got 800+ on the tune that was handed to me. I think what was handed to me was thestock FAST XFI 427FE tuning.I think they did not give me the tune they used.
We didn't put a very aggressive tune on it. Pump gas (premium), getting a few of the bugs worked out, etc And tuning it for "streetable driving"can rob some HP. Need to put some miles on it.
But that is behind us now. I still have more to do.
my77stang 06-29-2007, 10:52 PM so are you going back like tomorrow or are you going to break it in before playing with the efi again?
i cant wait for a burnout video (i hear pam cooking spray works wonders for keeping the rubber from sticking to the rear fenders [8D])

ha ha That wiring is a beeech. It just takes a while. Remeber to use a small battery charger when testing it out, not a battery.
my77stang 06-29-2007, 11:36 PM .....or you could plug a dummy extension cord into the wall and REALLY test is for weaknesses:D
valley firearms 06-30-2007, 11:28 PM I've been watching from the shadows but I must say that dyno video gave me a warm fuzzy feeling. I can't wait for the burnout video myself. Balls to the wall!
67SuperSnake 07-01-2007, 01:41 AM Thanks Valley!
Got the hood on. And about a dozen little things fixed. Getting very close to where I would considerit done (if there is such a state).
stangs67 07-01-2007, 05:40 AM Are you planning on keeping your shelby or selling it in the future? Ill cash you out 200k right now!!:D;)

67SuperSnake 07-01-2007, 02:11 PM Color me crazy, but $200k is below the reserve!
stangs67 07-02-2007, 04:07 AM ARE YOU SERIOUS! No im joking, with a 800 hp beast, maybe around 250k? can i get a275k?
stangs67 07-02-2007, 04:08 AM I wonder how would you match up with the new GT500 Super Snake releasing soon? How you think?
67SuperSnake 07-02-2007, 04:26 AM I don't really know. But once you get up in the higher engine hp numbers, so many thing can, and will affect it.
New Super Snake: 750hp x 20% hp loss = 600 rwhp. Roughly. If they uses a 3" exhaust. 2 1/2", I would probably take them on the drag strip. On the road course, advantage New Super Snake. I'm sorry, there is no way to make these old cars handle as refined as the new cars.Looks - advantage Old school Muscle cars every time.

Thanks. Just a question.. What does "bit sticky in anticipation of one on the road, under real load without the dyno fan." mean?
I like different music, and Colin Hay is excellent on the the acoustic. Nobody better IMHO.I love the sound, and it moves me.
Either way, thanks. And if you ever get to the states, give us a shout.

sounds really good, and those are some decent numbers but im guessing theres ALOT left in it.
what i would like to know is how did they come up with 800+ HP with a tune that was essentially crap?
the sound of your car puts lead in one's pencil so to speak.
I can't wait to see a vid of her on the road, without the distractions!
thanks for the accomodation offer. It will be a couple of years away, but I am hoping to get stateside to see some vintage racing sometime before the fun police ban motorsport altogether.

andrewmp6 07-08-2007, 04:19 AM stangs67 id put money on richard if that ever happens his mustang is lighter better power to weight a push rod not the mod motor and far less parts to go wrong or extra weight like abs airbags traction control etc etc. thats why i love older cars you gotta be a good driver and half way mechainc to own one.
67SuperSnake 07-09-2007, 01:35 PM Here are some pictures of the car just after I did the first exterior detail. I will get some better shots in the near future.

After I got the car back, and started putting everything together, I noticed a pattern. Almost everything on the car is either black or silver/chrome. Thought about naming it "Project Blackout", but that one has already been done. Then with the video, I used "Overkill" as the song. And it really fits the car, because that engine is OVERKILL. ha

Nabster 07-09-2007, 11:02 PM Very impressive and something to be very proud of. Just as much power as beauty in it too. Very nice.
67SuperSnake 07-10-2007, 09:41 AM The car doesn't have to be driven scary.
220 mph? Probably not. Anything over 170 starts getting in to aerodynamics and other things I really know nothing about. But it will probably never see anything north of of 140-150.
Power and beauty was what I was going for. Thanks!
Going to be in the garage all day today. We will see what all I get done.

Not a bad question, but come sit in my driveway, sip a few beers, walk around the car, and if you do not understand why I would not trade it for the aforementioned cars.....
The lambo is nice, ferrari is expensive, porche has the lines, but none have this style and american hertitage!
good12hav 07-14-2007, 01:44 AM If I had it I wouldn't trade it either.

Now for the good news/bad news. Good news is I found out why it is running so rough. When I adjusted the valves, I adjusted only the right (passenger) bank, because I was getting a little lifter noise. But I still noticed a roughness in the idle, and something was just not right. So I pulled a compression check. Cyl 6, 7 & 8. Were low. #1 was at 120# after 3 revs. Cyl #8 got up to 95# after 5 compression strokes. I pulled the valve cover, turned it over to the heel on the cam, and backed off the tensioner. The valve MOVED UP. It was not seating properly. SO I backed it off a little more. NO SPRING. Goes loose immediately. Adjusted it back down, up, down. Adjusts exactly like a solid lifter. YEP, collapsed lifter. Checked 6, 7, & 8. All collapsed. 5 is OK. CRRAPPPPPPP
The Snake reared its ugly head and turned in to Medusa!

This is a rookie mistake by the engine builder. I am a little PO'd. I'm gonna see what they are planning to do. $36k for engine and you would expect perfection!$%*^$
my77stang 07-14-2007, 03:18 PM but you said it was running great before right? on their dyno? in your car on the chassis dyno? or was it fubar from the start?

Running, but still a little rough. FUBAR from the start. I only adjusted the passenger bank (1-4). Trouble is on the driver side bank (5-8). It is a hydraulic roller.
This may change the next dyno run.

ha ha Come on!
67SuperSnake 07-17-2007, 04:27 PM I replaced the factory front swaybar with a 1" from NPD. Factory was either 5/8" or 11/16". The kit came with 1" mounts, which I did not know. I purchased this 1" bushing kit.
http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l259/rsowell_2006/FrontSwaybarInstallation2.jpg
The factory swaybar causes the end links to be tilted back, when used with the coilover suspension (see pic).
http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l259/rsowell_2006/FrontSwaybarInstallation11.jpg
I heard you would have problems using a 1" swaybar with an FE. I seem to have no clearance issues. Only problem with this bar is that it does hit the frame when the tires are lifted off the ground. So this should only be a problem when I pull my General Lee "jump the river" trick.
http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l259/rsowell_2006/FrontSwaybarInstallation44.jpg
I used the old end link bolts and had to shorten the bolt spacer in the (middle) about 3/8".

xian67, I have spent way too much (well over $100k). Had a lot more to go.
My77stang, that was only 4th gear, and not to the end of that. I'm still a little leery of taking a 40 year old car, with all new (untested)parts, and pushing it hard. Several people have pm'd me asking if they could make my cartheir desktop wallpaper. ha ha Go ahead! Knock yourself out!
SarNz, if you do, make sure you budget yourself accordingly and then add 50% on to that. All the little things add up VERY quickly. Front end alignment, glass, glass install, undercoating, insulation, welding wire, grinding wheels, cutting wheels, etc etc ad nauseum
andrewmp6 08-01-2007, 02:18 AM budgets are always broken mine i didnt wanna go over 30k i pased that a while ago but its the way i wanted it.one thing i learned these older cars are never really done upkeep can catch up to you. pads and rotors for big brakes aint cheap.

Soaring, I have already had an offer for $150K. So its not "too bad" that I will never beable to sell it. And the parts that I use are very serviceable after market parts, so anybody can repair it. It is great for shows, and driving.I think it is very smart because I can sell it in the very near or far future. You want to hear from this project in the near or far future, then be a little more "civil".Don't attack so harshly, enjoy what everybody else enjoys. You don't like it. That's OK.But that is not what everybody else thinks, by the vote of confidence in the "Participants' Choice"award that this car received.
