You've got a point..     Now I would just have to find the cam that wouldnt cost me an arm and a leg and that would work with the stock lifters/pushrods ...    Any suggestions?     I want something mild..   and If I can get the spacer to keep the 2 barrel carb on a 4 barrel intake I would do that and just save for the new carb,, but how gas efficent would that be?   I dont want to kill the milage totally..

So what cam?
and what intake/spacer?
that would not kill the milage..    For a cheap price,, but not crap..

im not sure stock cam specs for a 302, im sure someone knows though.  get a dual plane intake manifold,  a good upgrade in power but wont kill gas mileage

if i were looking to upgrade to a new cam for a 302, i would get something like this
http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=EDL%2D2122&autoview=sku

not much bigger but still more i believe,  this one is more like the one i got in my cleveland
http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=EDL%2D7122&autoview=sku

and those are cam and lifters,  so you need new steel pushrods and your set.  that can be fund on summit too for arounf 35 for a set of 16,  im not sure what the suze would be though

then for intakes, something like a performer intake

Atomsk680,, your the devil's advocate man..  Im starting to consider this stuff..  especially the cam,, the intake wouldnt be hard to replace later,, but I was tossing around the idea of a cam when I first started pulling the motor.. So you are really starting to push me in that direction..

Does anyone else think that 2.5 inch exhaust is too big for my 302,,    The flowmaster 40's I got are 2.5inch  in /out  so I figured it wouldnt hurt..  and I dont want to have to change it out later..  to match the engine modifications..

to be honest, im not sure,  im sure someone knows which ones you need,  when i bought mine i had to guess between 2 of them,  one was slightly longer then the other,  and when they came they were exactly the same as the old rods i bought

I'd like to make a couple of suggestions. Take plenty of close up photos, as you take your car apart. Put bolt and small parts in plastic baggys. Label the outside of the baggys with a permement marker and make a label on light card board, like a business card (in fact they work great) and place it inside the baggy. When you go to put it back together it will be sooooooooooooo much easier.
One other thing. If you install a new cam, do not use used lifters with it. Assuming you do not change the cam, make sure you put the same lifter back on the same lobe it came off of. Same pushrod in the same hole and the same rocker arm in the same place. Same pistons and rods, back where they came from. Of course, this all changes if you use new parts.

Good luck.

a cam will make it a different motor.. and you can always do the intake and carb later but putting in a cam sucks... and on the pushrods you should be able to get away with a stock length set.. that is if the heads and block have not been milled.. bolt it together without the intake manifold and adjust one intake and one exhaust valve and check to make sure the rocker tip is in the center of the valve throught the lift range... that simple

Thanks guys..  Now..  WHen i order the cam i will order the rods too.. its only 37 bucks more.. so why not..

I ran into a little problem though,, I pulled the inspection plate off of the bell housing and am trying to get the nuts off of the bolts holding the torque converter and fly wheel together,, and those things are seriously on there...  any suggestions as to how to keep the motor from turning while I strain something loosening the nuts???

Yea,, I really think that it may be the one Im looking for..  I went over to kragen today like 2 blocks from home, and the guy said he would match any price as long as it was legit..So I may just get it,,  that is after i get the freeking flywheel disconnected...

Still cant get the thing off..  any more suggestions.. I didnt get the tool because it was like 80 bucks..  I think I just need someone to hold the main pulley in front of the motor while I torque on the bolts underneath..

Use a large screw driver. Place it in the teeth at the edge of the block so it can't turn. Or just put your wrench on it and smack the wrench with a hammer, it will loosen right up. You might wanna wear safety glasses.

I pulled her out at about 1250am  today.. its 0128 right now and i just got out of the shower..

I will post pics tomorrow of the progress because I forgot the camera in the garage and dont feel like going down 3 sets of stairs to get it..     She came out pretty easy..  To get the torque converter nuts off I just put a closed end big ass wrench on the end of my ratchet and cranked down against the plate and she came off...   I just about stripped one of them though..

I have the engine hanging by the intake right now becaue the bolts i bought for my engine stand were about 1.5 inches too long and the motor sagged like it was going to topple over.. so i will make another trip to napa tomorrow(today) and pick up some shorter ones..

I was dancing around my garage like a fool when she came out.. It was great..   and I cant wait to get it back in all nice and pretty and MEAN>>  (but not too mean)
