Ok got my car back from my mechanic with new dual master cylinder, annual safety check reveled it need two new lower control arms but she is now running better than beforeso very happy, but the mechanic says the cylinder heads need rebuilding in 1-3k miles.My question is when this occursI thinkI will upgrade the intake and add a new carb at the same time and so whatpackage (heads intake carbs)do people recommend? And what also would be worth doing at the same time? What year explorers should i look for and what other than the heads should I remove from the explorers?
for ease of header/spark plug issues, look for a 97 1/2 or older explorer. you dont need anything other than the heads and rocker arms. i'd run with a performer rpm airgap or even a regular performer rpm (or maybe one of them thar wieand intakes)
gt 40 heads are great but they don't just bolt on fyi they have 64cc chambers on them vs the 54cc on your 289/302 so that will really hurt the power of your car cunless you mil them down but wouldn't that change rocker arm geometry so you would have to get diff pushrods am i right
Oh. the heads would be milled for sure and valves ground/replaced, etc. I just can't see spending close to 2K for heads when you can get some gt40's at the junk yard for a fraction of that cost. I wouldn't be building a hot rod anyway. I would just be trying to make an A code of of the C. But, for many years to come, she will remain a C and haul me around just fine.
