Mine comes on just as I get to the red line. Put your dash cluster in diagnostic mode, and see what the fuel level is reading as it counts down to 0 (empty).

As an FYI - the low fuel light should come on when you get down to about 54:

255 open send +/- 0
232 full stop +/- 0
215 Full mark +/- 10
178 3/4 mark +/- 8
138 1/2 mark +/- 7
93 1/4 mark +/- 5
41 E mark +/- 4
54 Low Fuel (0-59)
0-18 short (0-20 max)

Mine comes on right near the E mark. If you REALLY want to check it out then put a can of gas in the trunk & go driving till your car runs out. Trust me it's a frustrating feeling when the car coughs & sputters & coasts to the curb but you will then know if your fuel light works. Use the gas in the trunk to get you to a filling station.

But you really shouldn't be driving around often with that low of fuel level.. all the dirt &sediment at the bottom of your tank gets pulled into the fuel filter & is a thing to avoid
