View Full Version : What's Your Mod List (See what others are doing)
jthorn9 04-30-2007, 11:58 AM Ok, went browsing around the forum, and the 4.6L forum has a sticky like this and it went fairly well, so I figured I'd see how it goes here. The thread is simple. Post up your current mod list of your sixer. Don't include what you're gonna do, or what you'd like to do, only include what you have purchased that's on the car or waiting to go on as you can always follow back up on your post. ONLY POST YOUR LIST, NO REPLYS.
Also, in addition to your list, make a DOs, and DON'Ts list. In other words, list what you liked about your set up in the DO area, and what you're kicking yourself in the rear end for in the Don'ts. Yet again, don't list things you don't have. This is for those of you that love your exhaust set up in comparison to others, but you're kicking yourself in the rear end for getting a MAC x pipe, or ebay CAI, or just whatever you've done you regret doing so.
A few, not a lot, but a few pics would also be nice so people can see what these mods will look like on their ride.
The reason for this thread is so that people can learn from other people. I see so many post about what CAI to get, and what gears feel best, and what exhaust to get, etc. The point of this post is for people to see what other people are doing. If somebody is split between CAI A, and CAI B, and a new member sees that CAI A seems to be the most popular, then they might get that one instead, or ask a different question about that CAI, instead of an "In General" whatCAI to get thread.

Pros - The Magnaflow Exhaust sounded awesome. When I had the car on the dyno, the sound was extremely impressive, so impressive the shop owner said that's got to be the best exhaust he's ever heard on a sixer. Nice and deep and mellow down low, but fairly loud up top with little sound loss, in other words, you don't get as much of that V6 sound in their exhaust as other brands tend to get. The Diablo tune also drastically improvedmy automattic transmission. It only made 5 rwhp on the dyno, but the gains by the tranny made it so worth the cost. My custom tuning also helped out a lot as well. Boston Acoustic speakers were also a nice addition, just wish I had a better stereo at the time.
Cons - The ebay CAI was one of my biggest mistakes I made with that car. It wasn't one of the $25 cheapies, but it wasn't name brand either. There were no fitting issues, but the chrome faded on the CAI after 2 or so months, and within a year the blue hoses begain to dry rot, and the chrome hose clamps started to fade as well as corrode. Another don't was my Sony stereo. While Sony makes great stuff, their stereo equipment is crap. My amp is OK, but that stereo was crap. I did like how you could do a lot of in depth tuning, but the power wattage was so low, I had to drastically turn down my power on my subs just so I could hear my speakers. Also, while the 14" shortie antenna looked nice, it was just not practical if you live over 30 miles away from the broadcast tower, because my signal was cut in half, along with the height, like I said, looks great, but should really only be used for show if you live away from the city.
Suggestions -In my GT I have an Eclipse stereo, very nice 5X better than my old Sony, and a Zeus 17" shortie antenna, 10X better than the Steeda, as my signal actually got better with that antenna. I also have a BBK CAI in my GT, 20X better than my old ebay CAI in my sixer. I've had this CAI for about the time length that I had my old ebay CAI in my sixer, and it still looks brand new.

THE two best things ive done on this car has to be without a doubt the rear sway and the STB. I know the STB is debatable by lots of people that it does nothing as its perpendicular to the flex of the struts, but being a vert these two drastically stiffend up the cars cornering abilities.
Debatable items: Performance distributors claims to shave off .33 seconds off your quarter mile, yea fuggin right.!! :D But given its price its noticable that its on there, no power plus, but idle was perfect, often times i thought my car was off.
Sound: I love my setup, i would not change a thing. The only thing i do not like is the HUGE box i have in the back seat. Im trying to get it redone, but if i go with something else i will lose a lot of volume from the box and sound quality will go down. The tweeters were the best investment for quality they offer the highs perfectly crisps without distortion, then comes the subs very good down low. ( i enjoy listening to all types of music and this setup works great for everything, from country music to hard rock its all good)

Outside: Roush Stage 1 aeropackage (Splitter, side skirts, rear skirts, 3 post wing), All Roush badging, Y2K Cobra R 2 1/2" cowl hood with functional heat extraction, '03 black head light housings
Inside: Roush carbon fiber trim, Roush floor mats, Roush Racing pedals, Roush badging, Autometer A pillar with boost and fuel pressure, Cobreau CR1 seats (bright blue) and harnesses (black), Sparco harness bar (full cage waiting to go in), rear seat delete, stereo delete, removed all "dead weight" (insulation, extra wires etc....), empty trunk with basic carpet for looks JACK ROUSH AUTOGRAPHED DASH
Plans: Cage waiting to go in, reworking full suspension this Spring, KB twin screw, two tone paint.
EDIT: I've had people comment that I say the seats are Corbeau CR1s, but in the pic with Jack signing the dash they are Forza seats from Corbeau. (Good eye to all who caught it.) This car has seen many changes over the years. I've run stock leather, both black and blue Forzas, '03 Cobras, '01 Cobras and am now running the blue CR1s in the car - and that's just the seats.Along with those changes it's hadthree sets of wheels on it, four suspension set ups, three hoods, four exhaust systems, two stereo set ups (prior to gutting it),four motors, two different power addersand a host of other junk that I decided against later on.
Pros: This thing outhandles almost anything I run it against. Lacks the power, but brakes and corners like a champ - which is usally the area of the track I can catch the other cars. Side exhaust is something I'd never go with out now. It cleans up the rear so well when doing suspension work. It is a great track car, and also made a good daily driver (which is why I bought it in the first place).
Cons: Not exactly a good daily driver any more. But I wouldn't trade it for anything. Wish I could make more power down lower in the RPM band. (Hense the KB unit going on.)

-Alpine CD player, amazing sound quality def recommend, makes the stock speakers sound alot better
-Pioneer Speakers, i would go with Boston Acoustics if i were to buyaftermarket onesagain
Exterior:
-232 badges -- autobadges.com ROCKS fast shipping and amazing customer service
let me say that again.....autobadges.com is the BEST in the buisiness
-silver 'mustang' back bumper inserts, i would get the metel ones if i were to buy them again
Performance:
- MAC cold air intake- looks good, i didnt pay for it, so it makes it even better! the rubber fittings are starting to crack, dont know if any other brand has better rubber seals.
- SPEC Stage 1 clutch- AMAZING learning experience putting it in myself, i would say go for it instead of paying somebody to do it, if you have a shop you can work at, or even have the right tools at your house. the clutch feels better than stock, grabbs alot harder and feelsmore crisp. but i would go stage 2 if i would have known how 'light' the pedal was going to feel, it feels lighter than stock. id like the stiffer pedal and more agressive feel of a stage 2 or 3 even if my car didnt have the power to need the stiffer clutch.
-MAC cat back. i would NOT pay somebody 350 bucks to put this system in again, i got totally ripped off, i would buy mufflers and have a shop custom make a midpipe and bend some duals for me, the macs sound good but i dont think they would sound good without cats. but just for a bolt on with the y... i have had many MANY compliments on the look and sound of it, and the duals look amazing with the tips, they are level with the ground, and ive seen some V6's with tips that point down, and i think that looks horrible. -STEEDA firewall adjuster, i love it, i can adjust where the friction point is on the travel of the clutch pedal. a PITA to install since you have to cut the old firewall plastic piece out, (a dremmel helps) but it was worth it.
-Brakes, do NOT get metal brake pads, i got em and HATE having to clean my wheels twice a day... go ceramic. im bout to buy ceramic just so i dont have to deal with it anymore. it sucks because i just spent 50 bucks on the other ones.
My greatest piece of advice, from this whole car experience that i have had, is attempt to do the work yourself, ask questions, ask so many questions that people get annoyed, just so you fully understand what to do. and try and do everything yourself, the things you will learn, and the confidence you will have after you do it, it feels so good to know that every part you put on your car, was done by you, and it works, you know the work was done right, so theres my little rant, ask people who know what they are talking about and get the hands and arms a little greasy!!!!!!

Pros: I had no problems whatsoever with my ebay intake I bought from K2 Motors. It fit fine, and works just like every other intake. Its lost its luster slightly, but nothing big at all. The H&R springs were my best mod in my opinion along with the steeda short throw. The springs in combination with the blisten shocks and struts make this baby handle like a charm and the ride is very smooth and nice. Also removing the cats was the best move I could have made sound wise, minus the slight high pitch in the upper rpms.
Cons: The SCT performance chip fryed as soon as I did another mod to my car. Every time you "mess" with your car, it must be taken out and re-programmed for it to work good. Also the Sony Explod's were complete crap. They lived up to their name and exploded about a month or so after I have gotten them installed in a custom box for them to fit my trunk. Also the pulley is very hard to tell the difference for me from the stock pulley excpect at higher rpms in the later gears, I do feel more pull for sure.

The best performance mods of course would have to be the enigne work it was like night and day.
Appreance wise my favorite is my cobra front bumper and carbonfiber hood.
right now im getting ready to install my venom nitrous kit and start off with a 50 shot and work my way up to 100.
i also plan on getting here in a about 2 weeks so with il keep yall updated:D

Not too many mods as of now, will update as time goes by.
Engine
-65mm Throttle Body
-K&N Intake
-Underdrive Pulleys
Suspension
-Eibach Lowering springs (being shipped as we speak)
Exterior
-Multicolor L.E.D Foglights
-Multicolor L.E.D. underglow neon (Optix)
-Window decals - Bob White - "Mustang" on front window , Pony outline on rear window
Interior
-Green Neon lights all over the place
Audio
-Pioneer Super Tuner 3 head unit
-Pioneer 3 way 200 watt speakers (in doors, rear quarter panels, and on rear deck)
-312in MTX 7500 Subs
-2 1200 Sony X-Plod amps
Notes
If you are wondering about all the neon lighting, I do my own custom wiring work. Please don't think of me as a riccer with wires all over the place. I will have to say it is a nice clean look :-)
Within the next month, I plan to get 3.73 gears, and a racing clutch (unsure of what brand yet)

Pros - The suspension is awesome, the car actually handles likes a sports car now. Body roll is nearly gone, understeer has been taken care of, and body flex was taken care of by the subframe connectors. The tri-ax makes shifting fun again. UDP gives a little more pep and a little better fuel economy, although that could be me driving more responsibly who knows.
Cons - Ebay CAI sucks, I will be taking it off when I get time. I will probably go with a K&N filter with silencer removed. (Done and much better)
Now that the suspension is done I need to save up for some real performance mods.

pros: It really hasn't cost me much to get her to look great, just waited for good deals. wheels came free with snow tires(changed to my summer), chin i got a deal from a member here. most expensive thing was the fogs, and they were brand new. But I actually get compliments from girls and some older people. old guys say they're glad some of us young people like real cars:D.
cons: the stock tune and engine isnt exactly fast. i would like to get a tuner, shift kit, and Tlok, but its all on a tight budget for me. Also, the Oxford White can be hard to keep clean.

American Muscle CAI
Steeda Tri-Ax
SCT XCal 2 Tuner
9/16" G10 Intake Spacer
Cobra Front and Rear Swaybars
Aesthetics:
Autobadges 3.8 Emblem
IAC Restrictor Gasket
Painted Brake Calipers
Run in with a fence... Doh!
Do's - Well, with my few mods, my Tri-Ax was my favorite so far! Install was easy and quick on my own. It felt really notchy and took some getting used to, but I love ripping through the gears now! [sm=gears.gif]
Don'ts - I had heard all the things about don't get an eBay CAI, but I didn't have all that much cash after the shifter I ordered but I stretched it a little and went for the American Muscle CAI... Fitment was rediculous, I had to go out and buy my own hoses and tubes to get it to fit... Would have been only a little more to get a good BBK CAI from Autobadges. Oh, another don't is try and punch the throttle out of a corner when it's rainy... I did some uh... custom body work on mine, haha.
I always think the coming soon things are just people's wish lists, but I actually have these parts ordered and they're going to be installed soon! So... my Coming Soon list:
1x MAC Ceramic coated Longtube Headers
2x Flowmaster Original 40's
2x Magnaflow SS 18" x 4" Tips
1x BBK O2 Extensions
1x Pypes Stainless Steel Exhaust Hangers
1x GT Rear Bumper
And now the "Coming Soon" list

Ported and Polished Heads, Intake, All of it...

3.8_Special 07-14-2007, 07:21 PM Well, I bought the car with the CIS intake...
Just ordered the SCT programer for my car, should have it friday.
Machine my self some under drive pullys
In the future I want to build up a 4.2L + (See if anyone makes a crank and rod set up that can help me reach 5L...) (that would be so cool, 5L V6...)
Build up the top end Heads/ Intake manfold
A super charger and N2O...
Strengthen the frame/ rest of the drive train
Then MAKE a carbon fiber trunk lid and hood.
Sun roof could be nice too.
Suspention and side pipes (no H pipe)
Paint it blue with white or silver stripe/s and NO body kit/ plastic crap, NO stupid lights... If it doesent make the car faster or handle better, not happening.
All go NO show!

3.8_Special 07-24-2007, 12:32 PM Well, I have my XCalibrator 2 for my 97 basicley stock Mustang.
If you can afford the $400ish for it its GREAT.
Right now I have it on: 91 octane, fuel econmey, 14% more fuel on open throttle? and 30%? shift pressure.
Right now its on fuel econmey because I do lots of highway driving and everything eltse is for wen I nail it. From a stand still it feels much better then it did at the track when I took it (going again Aug 11, will have slips) the car now pulls like a raped ape when it shifts (love it).
Oh,I left the limiter on and shift points stock as well. I need to see some stock duno charts on a V6 Stang beforeI play with the shift points.
Ether way I LOVE IT.
next may be a little juice or a built up 4.2L... Pending whatvehicleI decide to drive when I move

Regrets
1st and foremost... Purchased Xenon GT rear fascia. When I took it out to the body shop to be painted/installed the dude noticed it was missing holes/housing for the rear side turn signals which are required by law in VA.
Even though California Mustang failed to mention that it was not street legal in some states and the photo on the site was iffy they refused to pay for shipping/packaging (I destroyed the box out of excitement)....... great I have an RMA but for me it would cost close to 200 dolla for the custom box/shipping to the other side of the US. Bumper itself was approx 350 not worth it so plan to sell on ebay or something in hopes someone able to use will buy.
I now have 3 bumpers... stock, unknown aftermarket, and xenon... lol? Thanks cal mustang and xenon. :(
2. Apparently I don't know my own strength. I busted off one of the studs on the tru-bilet fuel door. Thank god not only are they mailing me a new stud but it is secure enough as is minus half a stud.
3. When I put on my honeycomb tail light panel I lost my grip enough that it is alligned to far to the left. Once it made contact that was it... not moving. And ofcourse I had forgotten to moisten up the surface first to leave a little more room for error. I spent hours til night fall trying to move it thatmilimeter up/right (from back) using various tools including back side of my hammer, pliers, etc. Meanwhile as the hours past I got more and more POed and eventually stopped caring whether or not I scratched it or small portions of my trunk... oops.. [:@]I even soaked it and it won't budge...
Going to a body shop monday to see if they can loosen it up / sand it all down.
Note: Could probably blame on the lack of sleep for over 48 hours...[&o]
4.Long story short. I calledTed Britt Ford, Chantilly and spoke with a sales person whom was recommended to me. Stated I wanted some research and to sleep on it for less than a week. I walked in repeated same thing. Few moments pass and an old friend of mine popped up switching places as the sales person. With my guard gone a sales manager convinced me to walk out with a "today only" (yeah right) special and later finance convinced me get everything but lowjack.
Realized less than a week later that I could've gotten a dumbed down GT for $2K more which would leave me more room to customize. Damn...

I would have to say my best idea when modding my car was to paint the hood black. One night my car was vandalized by some punkass kids and i saw it done in the 5.0 mag so i decided to do it and in the end it looks great.
My biggest mistake would have to be my KYB shocks and sturuts because i felt no difference in the ride or handling

K&N, I love the sound.
The Grill with billet
maybe-
Convertilble..ok its nice at first but I find myself not putting the top down as much. Plus the extra work keeping the seals oiled. value of the car drops faster.
Flowmaster..better then stock, but would like it louder.
Silver Star.. better then stock, but low beam needs to be brighter
V6 are nice cars..cheaper then the GT, but I dont know if I would have made the same decision. I dont race(I like to cruise), but the power(Im a Tim Allen at heart).

Sorry if I don't conform to the standard post but basically my entire car is stock. I am currently in the process of finishing an engine swap though. I am putting a 3.8l supercoupe in. All I need is the custom chip and some new hoses and wires and it will be complete. When it's done I will add it to the post. Thanks.

Pros- The exhaust sounds great, the super 40's really hold their tone up top espically on a catless setup. The 3.73's are nice and still getgood highway mileage, they really help for the lowend torque loss from the exhaust. By no means fast, but a new motor will drop right in and i'll be done with my performance mods.
Cons - Stock suspension sucks, i'm really wanting a new suspension.

Performance
-JLT CAI
-SCT3 - Tune from Evolution Performance
Suspension
-Eiback Pro Lowering Kit
-Edelbrock Adjustable Panhard Bar
Exterior
-Fang Chin Spoiler

Interior

Pros
The JLT CAI and tune helped alot with the nose dive I was having after shifting as well as better top end power.
The Eibach lowering kit tightened the turns and made it much more solid feeling.
The Visor decal took away the yellow and white distraction of the airbag warning sticker of the stock visor.
Cons
Have not had anything not perform like I was hoping...yet!

-new, custom Azure Blue paint job, interior painting, new emblems
Pros:
-It handles like it is on rails, especially for being a 10 yr. old convertible. Excluding a full track hound race-only set up, I think it is probably one of the best handling mustangs in town.
-Though some people like their mustangs a little more subtle, I like my styling. Not as r*ce as neons, strobes, and huge ugly graphics or cheap body kits, but doesn't look as "clean" as some people like it. I like it, though.
Cons:
-It still has no REAL power. Until I get some real cash to stroke it, forge the bottom end, and strap on a blower, im still slower than the New Edge/s-197 GTs.
I NEED MORE MONEY!!!!
