Default Gas Pedal Pin Works Its Way Out

I have had this wierd problem for years and just wondering if anyone else out there experiences it since I have never seen a post about it. I have had the car for a little over 6 years now and it came with an unknown brand of pedal covers. As with most kits the gas pedal had to be removed and trimmed to fit the cover. Whenever I drive the car, the vibration loosens the pin that holds the pedal on and causes it to back out. It is MUCH worse now that I have the cam in and the car has even more vibration..I literally have to reach down and push the pin back in every 5 minutes or it will work its way so far out that the gas pedal will fall off the rod and get stuck (Not a fun thing to have happen!)

I realize the plastic hole in the pedal has been elongated over the years so it no longer "grabs" the pin, thus causing my problem. What I am wondering is can I use a skinny bolt and lock nut to keep the pedal in place permanently, or will that not allow the pedal to move freely on the pedal rod? It is so damn annoying to have to reach down every couple minutes while cruising to push that dang pin back in!!
